That Dust-Capsuleer issue.
« on: 05 Jan 2012, 18:17 »

So yeah been plenty of discussion on the topic: Can a capsuleer be a Dust Merc?

What we know:
http://dust514.org/home/item/eve-integration-interview?category_id=1 In this we are basically told EVE characters cannot transfer over to DUST. However, what is not made clear is if this is purely IRL technical, as in a capsuleer cannot go to ground and fight or something like that.

The RP Issues:
Apart from the issue of metagaming, there is another issue well highlighted in PF and some spectacular RPfails; the multiclone issue. PF, you have one active clone at a time. Period. If you have more than one, CONCORD hunts you down and kills you. Only exeption to this rule is The Broker, a la Empyrean Age. But you're not the broker. There also maybe a science based rule for not having more than one active clone but I'm not sure of this one.

So obviously, if you have 2 irl chars, on dust and eve, but the same IC char, this is pretty much a no no.

However, if you biomass your EVE char, and then make the same char on DUST, what then?

The Tony-G angle:
Still waiting on my copy of Templar One, so if anyone can glean any technical info from this, please contribute here.  :)

Obviously CLEARLY MARK SPOILERS BEFORE POSTING!

Bold is mine.

Wanted to point out the fact that NOTHING prevents you from claiming in any story that you did indeed have more than one clone active at a time - or somehow eluded CONCORD's knowledge of what clone is in use ( clone-jumping from a registered clone to an un-registered one hidden from their knowing) - you merely have to come up with a believable way to prevent CONCORD from finding out. I've not seen, IIRC, any info that states multi-clone activity as impossible, just that it's not allowed. CONCORD would not like hundreds or thousands of cloned versions of capsuleer X flying about in the ships the toon owns...

IC-wise, the two breeds of infomorph are supposedly based on vastly different technologies, with DUSTers built with actual enhanced and re-configured brain systems meant for rapid and repeated (almost casual) cloning, while capsuleer implant systems are meant solely to enhance man/machine synchronicity on a starship-sized scale and facilitate the uploading of fucktons of raw technical data through skillbooks.

I'm sure that a more definitive answer will wind up on our doorsteps sooner or later, but based on what we have now, the two techs should not be interchangable.

Assuming for a second that it isn't all that different (despite current evidence, retcons do happen), you have to deal with some big numbers. Being compatible with DUST tech is a one in a billion anomaly, being capsuleer capable is also one in a billion. Being compatible for both seems like a big number with a lot of zeroes in it...

Yeah, I dont think the two are interchangeable.  Yes, this means that our capsuleers are not physically the biggest, strongest, toughest soldiers in the galaxy.  Capsuleers are the schemers, the commanders, the captains and the financial backers.  I think thats a good thing for EVE RP.

OK, my issue specifically.

I'm a console gamer, probably always will be. I want to get into DUST but I'm rather attached to N'maro as a character.

If I were to biomass EVE N'maro and create DUST N'maro, would this still be legit?

Probably not. But you can always have a long lost relative with a strikingly similar personality.

I would also be exceedingly hesitant to give up an EVE char for Dust. One game has been around for several years and the other is entirely untested.

And then there's the issue of RPing on consoles/FPSes. I mean in the game, and not on the forums.  :ugh:

Dust people will still have same access to eve channels, so RP away. And I'm sure you can come up with something inventive enough to justify the transition. I'll be trying at any rate.

See, if I had a PS3 I'd more than love to get DUST. And Graelyn is right: the DUST tech seems to be for almost casual cloning (which, as has been revealed many times IC, Rek clones casually with sometimes-disastrous results). So will I be seeking a handwave? If I get the system and game, yes.

The point about the two techs being completely different still stands, though. It is not inconceivable that a filthy rich capsuleer simply special-orders a genetically modified clone to transfer into, though.

I'm just wondering what are the cosmetic effects of having an extra lobe in your head?

It is (in-game) impossible. That PF might state that people don't do it because Concord says 'no' is completely and utterly unbelievable. Like Concord is currently able to prevent anyone from doing what Concord thinks isn't allowed... NOT.

Merdaneth will think anyone who says people don't have multiple clones because 'Concord doesn't allow it' pretty dumb.

Also, you don't need to 'clone jump' from a registered to an unregistered clone. You simple have to copy the brain wave imprint that is transmitted to the cloning station. In fact, it should be perfectly possible to intercept, copy and use *other* capsuleers brain wave imprints and create illegal clones from other other people. In short: sucky PF explanation for the game dictated reality.
