Um. Maybe that means something different where you live than where I live.

I hope so, anyway.  :ugh:

Rest assured that there's no negative connotation implicit in those words, bar imagined. I feel well familiarised to Sir Havvie to the extent that I feel such terms should not be interpreted as derogatory. By 'coloured', I invoke a tone of skin that inclines towards beige, brown or black. Healthy spectrums of melanin-containers they are.

I still don't understand what Scagga said :P but please understand that, at least to those of us in North America, that term has significant emotional baggage (to understate things). :)

Carry on!

Topic drift....
In any case - must be one of those international difference things.
In the UK there would be no negative connotation here - I have no idea how such might be communicated in America without risking offence.
I am reminded of a time I was horrified at a festival at a word an American used to refer to a friend of mine who has a distinctive characteristic (I won't be specific so as to avoid more topic drift), my initial reaction was anger but when I turned to face him down I realised that he thought he was being polite (and so he was). In America that is just the word they use, which in the UK could not be used without the intention to cause trouble.

Not to all of us in North America.

Some of us don't really care.

Then again we live in a country that things are only derrogatory when stated by certain people, and it's "ok" if certain other people use the same word.

The term you are referring to is 'colored' not 'coloured'.

Aaaanyway. I am happy to discuss the general topic of racism vs language (particularly since I presume that none of the respondents are out and out racists :) ), but I'm sorry for drifting off-topic here.

As evidence of my intention to get back on-topic: here's me a couple of months ago when I experimented with a full head shave, Bic and all.

And more recently at a vacation with my wife.
