Tech Studies

"Today, class, we will begin looking at materials science. As it is Written: God gave everything Purpose. Accordingly, different materials are suited to different applications."

"Sir? why do we have to know this? we're like, not spaceship designers or something?" asks Akhtih.

"Well, that is a good question, and it deserves a good answer. The reason you need to know things like this, is so that you have the knowledge to know what is, and what is not possible, so that you may issue instructions to your freemen tradesmen and your servants. It would be embarrassing for you to ask them to do something impossible. You would reveal yourself as not knowledgeable, and your people would find that embarrassing, as if you addressed them in the nude. They would not know where to look. And if you are insistent on attempting the impossible, then your people will fail their assigned tasks, which would upset them greatly, as it meant they were unable to fulfil their mistresses orders. Avoiding this sort of awkwardness is why you need to know these things."

The class listens attentively.

"Now, let us consider polymers. As you know, it is Written: 'Surround yourself with the faithful, stand together, for there is no strength like it under the heavens.' and when we examine polymers, we can see the individual molecules standing together, and the process of polymerisation gives the material strength."

The class watch the three-dimensional images of molecules undergoing polymerisation. "Cool" says Louella.

I read these every single time you update, Lou. I really like how you integrate Amarrian theology in their every day lives in a way that makes perfect sense. Rock on. :D

Maths

"Mathematics is one of the means by which the workings of Gods creation are revealed" says the teacher, a young Amarr woman by the name of Dr. Chebha.

"How's that, miss?" asks Zesia.

"Mathematics describes all things, Zesia, and how they are connected to each other. It has many practical applications for your estates. Predictions of orbits of objects, analysis of weather patterns, many, many things are possible using mathematics."

"oh, sounds useful" says Reraha.

Some time later...

"maths is hard" says Girned.

Modern Studies

The class continue to look at the Minmatar rebellion, and the interference by Gallente and Jovian forces.

"Gallente ships look like wigglies" says Louella.

"Language, Ms. Dougans, we don't say 'wigglies' here. We say 'lady-pleaser' or 'man-spear', not *cough* 'wigglies' " says Ms. Tamarom, smiling. The rest of the class giggle a bit.

Louella's room

Louella is brushing her teeth in the bathroom, when Reraha opens her door.

"Oh, sorry, didn't know you were in here"
"that's ok, Reraha, I was just finishing"
"oh, ok, thought I would have a bath, I feel tired and stuff"
"Yeah, me too. It's a lot of stuff we have to learn about, didn't know there was this much."
"I know! hey, is that a bruise?"
"Yeah, that was from the other day, a blob of clay hit me in art class, was really sore"
"ouch, looks it. I have some soothing cream somewhere if you like?"
"cool, that'd be great. Hey, want me to help wash your hair?"
Reraha smiles "that'd be great, thanks!"
Louella runs a bath, while Reraha finds the soothing stuff, then helps Reraha wash her hair.
"your bubble bath looks fun, Reraha"
"yeah, it's special bubbly stuff from one of our estates in Tash Murkon Prime, it's supposed to be expensive and stuff, smells nice and is really good for your skin and things."
"cool"
"now, avert your gaze" says Reraha, giggling. "Zesia says we have to learn words like that, for instructing people and stuff."
"Oh, I'm a servant now, am I?" grins Louella. "we'll see about that!" she laughs, splashing Reraha.
"eeep!" says Reraha, splashing back.
"anyway, I can't be a servant, I'm a True Amarr, look!" says Louella.
"hehee, so you are. Miss Nisouman was right, they are different colours. That's like, weird, isn't it?"
"Totally, wonder how that happened anyways"
"yeah, we'll probably find out later in the class. could you hand me a towel? I think i should get out before getting all wrinkly"
Louella hands Reraha a towel, "here you go."
"Good night, Louella"
"sleep well, Reraha"

Louella's journal

dear mum, gallente ships are lady pleasers, not wigglies. Maths is complicated but interesting, plastics are righteous.

Louella's Journal

Today in history, we learned some stuff about the Ealurians and how they were the first inhabited planet the Empire found. Then in social studies, there was a funny thing when Miss Gimela talked about cosmetics and things, and there was stuff like how to buy the best scalp wax for your husband and stuff, it was funny.
Then we had maths. There were equations.

Art

"Hello class, how are you all today?" asks Ms. Kieram. "The clay vases we made last time have been fired, and now we can paint some designs on them, and then glaze them. Have a think about what you want to paint on them, and I'll show you the process involved."

Louella chooses a religious symbol. Others choose their family logo, such as Reraha and Zesia who put the Tash-Murkon symbol on theirs.

Church

The girls gather in the school chapel, for a service, which includes a prayer, sermon, and several hymns. The school chaplain is a red-haired Amarrian woman, Ms. Ozuden.

Scripture and Literature

Ms. Ozuden also teaches about Scripture and Literature.

"Now girls, the language of the Scriptures is a wondrous thing. The oldest were written in a language that is no longer in common use, yet the meanings remain the same. When reading the older books, you must remember this. Read it, then read it again, then think, then read it again. Your ancestors understood the Scriptures, and so will you. Put yourself in the place of your ancestors, and understanding will be yours."

"Miss? you mean like, the metaphors and stuff?" asks Sehrazah.

"Yes, Sehrazah. A metaphor gains more power when you think and understand the context of the metaphor. Some of you will be from desert worlds, others will be from more maritime environments. Think about these things when reading Scripture."

After class, Louella and Zesia hand in their essays about what they did wrong, to the Headmistress, who frowns at them slightly.

Louella's Journal

dear mum, this was the last day of classes this week, it's a day off tomorrow, I'm going to go exploring the town and stuff, love Lou-lou.

Day Off

After getting up and breakfasted, Louella takes a wander towards the Academy gate. She's wearing knee length socks, a knee length skirt, t-shirt, and wooly cardigan, and has a shoulder bag.

"Miss Dougans, where do you think you are going?"
"Oh, umm, hello Headmistress, I umm, was going to wander round town, look at things?"
"Juniors are not allowed into town on their own, Miss Dougans. There are Rules. You must have a chaperone."
"Oh, umm, where can I get one?"
"Wait here, I'll have one sent out to you."
The Headmistress walks off, and Louella stands waiting for a few minutes, humming.

"do doo dooo, dah dee dahh, do de dee dah"
"Miss Dougans?"
"oh hello?"
A tall Udorian man appears, wearing a formal outfit with the school logo on it. He is somewhere over 6ft tall, and muscular, as if he is a soldier or policeman.
"I am your assigned chaperone for today, Miss Dougans."
"oh, you can call me Louella"
"Miss Louella"
"super, what's your name?"
"If it pleases you, Miss Louella, my name is Jalar"
"That's a nice name, Jalar. Anyways, I was going to wander round town."
"Very good, Miss Louella."
"alrighty" Louella takes Jalar's hand and starts wandering out the gate. Jalar looks surprised for a moment, then follows.

"It's a nice day today, isn't it Jalar? Though, I guess, since we're in a domed city, it'd be a nice day every day?"
"Indeed, Miss Louella"
"Means there's not going to be surprise rain and stuff, doesn't it? Hey, do they make it rain every so often, for plants and stuff? That would be nice, hey you could make it rain during the night, when everyone's asleep and stuff, then that's like, more convenient and stuff, isn't it Jalar?"
"Quite so, Miss Louella"
"I visited a watery planet this one time in Emrayur, Emrayur five it was, but I was on holiday there, and it was like, raining all the time, it was a bit funny. But it was like, nice and warm though, which was nice. and like, Mum said rain isn't too big a problem if it's warm, because your skins waterproof and stuff? It was sort of sunny sometimes though, and I got a bit of a suntan, you know? I think lots of people go there on holiday, on the cruise ship things they have. It's quite expensive, I think. And there's stuff like, boats and there's fish and things, it's quite nice. I just went swimming though. We had a private boat too, so it was just us, which was nice. But it rained almost every day, so I had to wear swimming costume all the time, otherwise I'd just have got wet, you know?"
"Indeed, Miss Louella"
"ooh, there's a lollipop stand, I wonder what flavours they have, do you like lollipops? I like them, the fruit ones."

Louella gets a coin from her bag, and purchases two lollipops. "Here, Jalar, one for you, and one for me."
"Very good, Miss Louella"

The two continue to walk through town, now with lollipops.

It is the little subtle things that make this story interesting to follow.

I also really like they way you make it so easy to visualize the setting.

Day Off

Louella and Jalar wander through an area of parkland, there are a number other people wandering around, walking their pets, and feeding the ducks on a duck pond. Here and there are various statues depicting saints, Emperors, theologians, admirals and generals, and other notable people from history.

"it's nice here, isn't it, Jalar? the trees are pretty. Next time, I think I'll bring some food for the ducks, they're funny aren't they? The statues must be quite old, I think? I wonder if some of them are imported ones, cos they look really old? Like maybe from Athra or something?"
"Indeed, Miss Louella"
"hey, what's that over there?" Louella points at a handful of short pedestals, each of which have a person standing on them, and groups of people standing around, watching the ones on the pedestals.
Jalar looks over. "Ah, that is the Preaching Corner, Miss Louella."
"Oh? what's that?"
"At the Preaching Corner, Miss Louella, people discuss Scripture"
"Ooh, can we take a look? that sounds interesting"

"...and at the End Times, the Lord shall Punish the sinners. All of them, with a 9-bladed sword. Not 2, or 5, or 7, but 9. Nine bladed sword..."
"...for it is Written that those who Embrace will be saved, while those who Reject are cast out..."
"...Saint Ageroth said happiness comes from what you hold in your heart, not your hand. Realise and be Joyful..."

"they're quite passionate, aren't they, Jalar?"
"Indeed, Miss Louella"
Louella politely applauds when the different speakers finish, as do the other members of the crowd, except for two Khanid women standing towards the back, dressed in dark colours with a subtle Theology Council button on the collars of their jackets. The Khanid women look disinterested, occasionally bored.

Louella and Jalar continue walking through the parkland.
"hey, there's a sandwich stall, lets get something to eat. What do you like, Jalar? Is a cheese roll alright? I like cheese rolls, I once had one that had four different kinds of cheese, isn't that something?"
"Quite, Miss Louella"
Louella purchases two cheese rolls from the sandwich seller, and Louella and Jalar walk on to find a bench to have their lunch on.

"How old are you Jalar? I'm 12, nearly 13."
"I was born 37 years ago, Miss Louella."
"oh, that means you're the same age as Mum. That's nice. I got Mum a nice necklace for her birthday last time, she really liked it."
"Indeed, Miss Louella"
"These cheese rolls are nice, aren't they? I heard that you can tell what planet a cheese comes from, or something, like some planets specialise in certain kinds of cheese and things. There'd be a lot of kinds of cheese though, wouldn't there? Because the Empire has so many planets and stuff, I wonder if you'd actually be able to taste every variety of cheese, seems like there'd be a lot, don't you think?"
"Quite, Miss Louella"

Louella and Jalar continue to walk, leaving the park, and entering the town centre, where there are many shops and businesses.
"I like shopping, and window-shopping, looking at what sort of clothes people wear and things, you know?"
"Indeed, Miss Louella"
"That's a lovely dress in that shop there, look, that embroidery is super, must have taken the dressmaker a while to make that, look how intricate it is."
"Quite so, Miss Louella"

They continue through the town centre, reaching a market square with numerous stalls of small traders and craftspeople selling their wares. There is a church at one side of the square, also with some stalls in the grounds.
"Ooh, there's some interesting things here, Jalar, look at this jewellery and things. Hey, what's that church?"
"It is the church of Saint Tal-Romon, Miss Louella."
"oh? Tal-Romon, oh hey, he's the Udorian saint, isn't he? Let's go take a look"
Louella and Jalar enter the church grounds, where there is some kind of event going on.

"Hello young miss, would you like a raffle ticket?" asks an old Amarrian man, with grey hair.
"ooh, a raffle, what's it for?"
"We are raising funds for expansion of the church orphanage."
"super! I'll buy a ticket" says Louella, handing over some coins.
"Thank you, young miss, may Saint Tal-Romon bless you", says the man.

Louella wanders around the stalls, which are selling a variety of things including home baking, Scripture-inscribed handiworks, and much more.
"this is interesting, isn't it, Jalar?"
"Quite, Miss Louella"
"They make some fabulous things, and it's for a good cause, isn't it? oo, look at those cakes, they look yummy, how much are they? Oh? is that all? wow, that's less than I thought. Yes, I'll have one, and one for Jalar here. Thank you. mmm, these are really yummy, aren't they, Jalar?"
"Indeed, Miss Louella"
"Oh hey, isn't that Miss Nisouman over there?"

Louella points at a tanned Udorian woman with long blonde hair, it is Miss Nisouman.
"Miss Nisouman? hi!"
"Oh my, hello Louella, how are you? Hello Jalar"
"I'm doing great, we did lots of interesting stuff today, Jalar and I had lollipops and went to the park to listen to the preacher people, and there were ducks, and we had a cheese roll, then we looked at the shops. Do you know Jalar well? He's super, I like him, he's a really great conversationalist and stuff."
Miss Nisouman raises an eyebrow, "Is that so?". Jalar looks mildly embarrassed at being described as such.
Louella nods "I bought a ticket for the raffle today, Miss Nisouman, cos they're building a new thing for the orphanage, isn't that a great idea?"
"Yes, Louella, it is. Do you know much about the Saint?"
"Umm, I know they're the patron saint of travellers and stuff, and the first Udorian saint and so on, but haven't really covered much, I guess we'll learn more about them later, in history class"
"I'm sure you will, Louella." Miss Nisouman looks at her watch. "Oh, the raffle prizes will be announced shortly"
"super, did you enter as well?"
"I did indeed, there were some lovely prizes."

The three walk over to stand in front of a podium where the priest of the church is announcing the prizes.
"Next prize is this golden necklace donated by the Friends of Tal-Romon, the winning raffle ticket is..."
The priest pulls a number from a hat
"Number 173. Who has ticket 173?"
A young Udorian woman waves her hand "I have it!" The crowd applaud.
The prize announcement goes on for a while. Miss Nisouman won a bronze bracelet and a bottle of Chanounian wine.
"And finally, the grand prize, this lovely young Udorian, donated by Lord Komal", says the priest, as a blonde woman is led onto the podium. She has long blonde hair, dark green eyes, and is naked except for shoes and a belt around her waist, with a string on it.
"The winner is, number 689. Who has ticket 689?"
Louella looks at the number on her ticket. It is 689.
"umm, I do" says Louella. The crowd applaud.
"The young lady wins the prize!" says the priest. "Congratulations, come and claim your prize. Thank all who entered the raffle, may the Saint bless you"

Louella holds the string that the Udorian woman is on the other end of. "Umm, hi" says Louella. "What's your name?"
"My name is Hazli, mistress", says the woman.
"Hi Hazli, I'm Louella"
"Yes mistress"
"Umm, ok, err, umm. Hmm. How old are you? I'm 12."
"I am 21, mistress"
"Ok, umm, lets buy you some clothes and stuff, I think, you must be a bit cold and stuff"

"Quite a prize you won, Louella" says Miss Nisouman.
"yeah, umm, does she stay in my room?"
"Oh, juniors aren't allowed slaves in their own rooms, she'd have to stay in the school's staff quarters"
"Oh, ok. I'm going to go shopping for Hazli, would you like to come along, Miss Nisouman?"
Miss Nisouman smiles. "I'm sure that would be enjoyable".

The four of them wander out of the church grounds, into the market square.
"ooh, here's a nice dress, won't that look good on you, Hazli?"
"It is a nice colour, mistress"
"oh, you can call me Louella. What do you think, Jalar? won't this dress look good on Hazli?"
"Indeed, Miss Louella"
"Alright then, I'll buy it." says Louella, purchasing it from the stallkeeper. "There you go, Hazli, you can put the dress on now, and you'll be warmer and more comfortable and stuff now."
"Thank you mistress Louella."

Miss Nisouman is consulting her data device. "Hmm, Louella?"
"Yes miss?"
"It appears that one of the slaves we were going to have your class learn about breeding with has fallen ill, with the Debylian flu. Would you like to use Hazli in your lesson instead? it would be a big favour to the school"
"umm, if Hazli agrees, sure? what do you think, Hazli? do you want to help out?"
"Yes mistress Louella"
"Ok, miss Nisouman, Hazli says yes"
"That's great, I'll see you both in class tomorrow then. I have some other things I need to do now, so you have fun with the rest of your day."
"Bye miss Nisouman"

Louella, Hazli and Jalar continue to wander around the market, Louella purchases some more clothes for Hazli, and also buys Jalar a hat.
"You look great in that hat, Jalar, doesn't he Hazli?"
"Yes, he does, mistress Louella"
Jalar's expression is unreadable.

The three enter a restaurant, where Louella buys soup and sandwich for all of them, before they walk back to the Academy.

"I enjoyed today, Jalar, did you?"
"Indeed, Miss Louella"
"well, I have to go, can you look after Hazli and show her where her room is and stuff?"
"Yes, Miss Louella"
"Alright, you two enjoy yourselves." says Louella, smiling at the two of them, before heading back to her room.

Louella's Journal

Dear mum, I went into town today, you have to have a man chaperoning you unless you're a senior, the man was called Jalar and he was really nice and knows lots of really interesting stuff, there was a lovely park, and there were people talking scripture in it, there were lots of interesting shops, I won a slave in a raffle at a church thing, her name is Hazli and she's really pretty and stuff, and she's going to be helping me with some schoolwork next week, and I think it will be good.

Wow, Louella is an incredible optimistic child. Bordering to the naive, but I guess she maybe does not understand fully what "human reproduction" entitles.

heh, Lou understands that "human reproduction" consists of "wigglies and eww" but can also be fun :)

also, what do you think of the belt that Hazli was wearing? I thought the collar was a bit over-used in things, so felt like something different.

For me it seems like the giving away of a slave as first price contained a few elements outside of normal slave trade practice to symbolize that this price is special. Sort of the same way a wrapped a gift is bit more special than just getting handed an item.

Human Biology

"Good morning class" says Miss Nisouman, "Today we'll be dividing you into groups, and assigning you a female slave for your coursework. You'll be given the slave's medical record, and the records of several potential mates, and I want you to choose one, and be able to justify your choice, alright? "

The class are given their group assignments. Louella has Reraha and Sehrazah in her group.
"Hi Louella, how's things?" asks Sehrazah
"Alright, I went into town yesterday, was fun, how about you?"
"oh, I was in the library mostly" says Reraha
"I got a package from home, some books and things" says Sehrazah
"Ooh, sounds nice" says Louella
"Louella, do you know what kind of slave we have to do stuff with?" asks Reraha
"Umm, we'll be using this girl called Hazli, I won her in a church raffle yesterday, she's really pretty and stuff, she's Udorian and has lovely hair and eyes"
"huh? why's that?" asks Sehrazah
"an Udorian? cool!" says Reraha
"Miss Nisouman said they needed an extra one because of stuff, and since I just won her, than it was like, totally convenient, you know?"
"wow, that was lucky"
"Yeah, hey, there she is now"

A school technician has led in the slave women that are assigned to the class. Miss Nisouman is supervising their allocations to the groups. Louella waves at Hazli, and Miss Nisouman brings her over.

"Alright girls, you three will be learning with this slave here, Louella won her in the Church of Saint Tal-Romon's raffle yesterday, isn't she something?"
"yes miss" says Reraha.
"Hi Hazli, did you sleep alright? how was the room Jalar showed you to? alright?"
"Hello mistress Louella. Everything is fine"
"wow, Louella, you're right, she's got lovely eyes"

Louella is looking over the files for potential mates for Hazli. The records contain information about ancestry, immune system profiles, blood groups, dispositions to various diseases, and much more.
"this is complicated"
"yeah, Lou. We did this sort of thing for our slaver hounds too. There's so much to think about. Then you end up finding out that one of your dogs doesn't like bitches, and you're like, 'meh'. and like, have to start again and stuff."
"omg, I didn't think of that! Hazli?"
"Yes mistress Louella?"
"Umm, do you like boys? or like, do you think they're icky and stuff? and like girls instead?"
Hazli looks blank for a moment, then says "Boys will be fine, miss Louella"
"ok, super. Hey, Reraha, you said you did this sort of stuff for your dogs? You can make sense of all this?"
"Yeah. It's like, you want ones that have different immune systems, so the puppies get immunity to more things, but you also want to avoid introducing genes that make them like, more sensitive to diseases like you know, heart disease in old age and stuff."
"Cool."
"One of my cousins had that" says Sehrazah. "She was like, wanting to marry this dude, but the medical thingies said their genes had stuff that meant there'd be a risk of something, so she married a different dude instead to have her children with. For Family stuff, you know?"
Reraha nods her head in agreement. "omg, we'll have to think about this stuff too in ten years or so. That would be like, hard, if you liked a boy, but he was unsuitable and stuff."
"ten years seems a long way away?"
"yeah, but like, we'll be in here for 6 years and then thats only 4 years till people go to those big dance things and meet people and stuff. You might even get to meet like, Jamyl Sarum and stuff!"
"omg!"

Louella, Reraha and Sehrazah continue looking through the profiles of suitable mates for Hazli.
"hmm, how about this guy? Says he's got the right genetics and immunities and stuff?" says Sehrazah
"looks alright to me, what do you think, Louella?" asks Reraha
"Umm, sure. Hazli? what do you think about this one?" says Louella, showing the profile to Hazli.
"why are you asking Hazli?"
"cos like, maybe she won't like him? and if she doesn't like him, she won't like, orgasm and get fertilised and stuff?"
"oh, right, yeah"
"He looks fine, miss Louella" says Hazli.
"Super!"

Louella, Reraha and Sehrazah write up their justifications for the chosen mate for Hazli, and hand it in to Miss Nisouman, who looks it over, raising an eyebrow occasionally. "I see. Well, your reasoning is alright, though you need to be more accurate in your writing. Remember, your justifications for these sort of decisions go in to your records, and will be used in the future, by your descendants, so you have to be precise in your words, so that they may be understood in twenty or thirty years. Can you remember what you meant by 'and stuff' after that length of time, hmm?"

After class, Louella talks to Hazli.
"So like, I thought class went well today? hey, I had an idea for next biology class, I could like, do your hair and stuff, put pretty ribbons in it, you know?"
"That would be nice, Miss Louella"
"Alright, I have History class next, so, umm, take care and stuff and I'll see you later?"
"Goodbye, miss Louella"

Very nice how the tone and style remains the same cheerfully optimistic hyperactive buzz, but the slight shift, introducing an ever-present yet alien aspect of Amarrian society, jars the reader slightly.  I approve.
