I might need some advice.
I've spent the last 3 hours grinding away at this issue now and think a more diverse range of possible advice might be helpful.
So let's explain.
I've got a
cat. Beautiful, black
Bombay cat, whom I care for quite alot. I take care of this cat by letting him in/out whenever he asks (any time of the day, even in the middle of the night if he asks me) and ensuring he always has food/water readily available.
I was informed by my father a few hours ago, that a neighbor of mine will soon report me to the police for, of all things, animal mistreatment. In this case, neglect.
The issue here is that they believe my cat is not being treated right because he arrives at their houses and begs for food, and in this summer heat when people keep doors/windows open to vent air, enters their houses and sleeps in their beds. It's been claimed he was - at one point - malnutritioned and less-than-optimal weight, though this has now been dealth with due to their feeding of him out of pity. I can't recall noticing his weight issue, but that don't mean it was not the case.
Now, the above is what they claim, and I've no reason to dispute this because I don't like to claim my neighbours are lying about this situation for whatever reason, or deludin myself to think there is no problem. However, here are a few factors to consider and I'm not sure, but I've theorized my situation stems form a combination of these.
I'm not around 24/7. I've work to attend to, and other reasons not to be home all the time. When my cat asks to be let in, I'm lot always around to let him in, and neither is anyone else. No entry, no food.
I've two neighbours in the vicinity. Across the street in front of my house there lives and old lady who has admittedly feed my cat previously, long before this issue was raised. I've theorized that doing so help tell my cat it's okay to eat at other houses than mine - I do not appreciate this. This woman lives alone and has been said to be mentally lacking due old age, memory and logic not totally up to par, sadly. Other than this she's quite a nice old woman and I bear her no ill-will.
At the end of my lawn towards the right there is a fen, (living wall of bushes, trimmed to be square. I think fen was the right name) this separates my property from that of my other neighbor. My cat can travel freely past this obstacle and ofthen do, I've spotted him plenty of times sleeping in an out-doors chair on my neighbour's porch or just exploring around the area. This neighbor too has feed my cat, but compared to the old lady, likely out of a sense of need rather than just pity and claimed need. This is the man who now considers involving the authorities - it would appear he's rather worried for my cat and possibly annoyed with the cat's habits around his house.
In my house I let my cat sleep wherever he please, with the sole exception of my own bed. There are two other bed rooms, my mother's former room and a guest room. Besides this there are plenty of soft surfaces for him to sleep on and I've found him sleeping pretty much anywhere. Even in my sink, hillariously enough.
Now, here is a theory of mine; He knows he can eat in my house whenever he's here. He knows he can sleep pretty much wherever he wish, and he knows he can get out whenever he asks, or in if I'm here. I'm not always around so if I'm not, he looks for food elsewhere when hungry. The other close-by humans feed him or has been known to feed him, so he likely extrapolates that it's okay to ask for food there as an alternative to myself, even if I'm around, and it's also okay to sleep there. After all, I let him sleep where he please, should they not?
This situation has 3 ends.
I manage to find a fix to this.
I have to put him down.
I go to jail for animal mistreatment and he is put down regardless.
Options 2 and 3 are totally unacceptable to me. I will not serve time over this issue, and I will most definitly not have the only living resident in this house besides myself killed over this idiocy. So... how do I ensure that option 1 takes place?
Tomorrow I'll call my mother and hear her ideas/opinions on this issue.
Finally, I've got only one option that I know I can do at this time. There is a small hole in the side of one of my walls where my cat can slip inside to a dirt-floor under a very low roof, leading to a further opening in a cellar wall that leads pipes out and my cat inside to a cellar room. If I keep the door to this room ajar and the door to the cellar open he can get inside and out whenever he please. The downside is that stray cats or others can get inside as they please too. At this point however, this is a fair sacrifice.
Gonna go try and sleep more now. This kind of messed up my plans to get a good night of sleep before tomorrow's work x.X
