I prefix all my ships with FDS or Federal Defence Ship...not sure if it should be Federal Militia Ship though. Just for fun regardless

I use the corp prefixes, even if I find them weird. It has always been a rule for me, though some of us do not run them even if they are asked to do, and I can understand that /me glances at Esna. I have some difficulties with some of our cheesy titles and stuff :p

But anyway, ship prefixes are great RP tools.

Let's see....

For xDIAx, we used TCV - Theology Council Vessel

For 24IC we used ICV - Imperial Crusader Vessel

TES always seemed a bit clunky to me. The Empire's/Empresses' Ship?  Blah!

The PIE prefix of TES (although widely spread by ex-PIE's to other organisations nowadays) still provides us with the benefit of instant recognition on directional scan - both for us and our enemies.

Believe me, when casting the net wide you really do want to only chase the real targets with the d-scan, not half of your own fleet

Well, eh.. Angel-affiliated, so when not running silent, I like riffing off the Angel rat naming conventions.

When trying to be a little less overt, I'm changing as often as I can be bothered, with as little consistency between naming styles as I can manage. Slight preference for copying names off the same shiptype, or going with things like "<Random Neutral>'s Hurricane".

I'm not sure if ship prefixes would be universal though. Even amongst militaries, some don't use them internally. Civilian ships also don't use them. It's mostly naval, so I don't expect the pirate factions to use them.

MS and MV on civilian ships rare? To a land crab like me most larger craft seem to have those around here.

Forgot to add a caveat. If I am on a roam, and not in an actual war, I always just use no prefixes and the most non-rp and ultra-offensive/toilet humor name I can find.
Ha!  I flew a probe for quite a while that was named "Anal".  If it was a hull people used more often, I imagine the name would be somewhat commonplace...  Like "Katrina" for Hurricanes.

I generally found that if I was in low/null sec, ANY name that indicated RP/Serious Business was like dangling the worlds biggest carrot in front of a legion of angry rabbits. Fleet fight in system? They make instant friends and scream "TRUCE! LETS GO KILL THE LOLRPER!!!"

My old Amarr character's faction ships do carry a HIMS (Her Imperial Majesty's Ship) prefix (non-faction or civilian ships are not worth such of a distinction).

Huh. So I'm not the only one to use this (albeit I use it for most of my "practical purpose" ships, i.e. PvP ships and commonly useful noncombat ships like haulers). Dedicated PvE ships, temporary ships, joke fits, etc. tend to be given quick and/or joking names that don't have a title.

I ran with a w-space corp for several months that used a prefix to quickly id non-corp ships that came into our wormhole system.  Worked rather well in that setting because most neutrals/reds coming in would have no idea who lived there and thus couldn't come in with a copied prefix.

Some time ago, I lived in a W-space corp where we actually sent out "IFF codes" to be put in our ship names by mailing list. It worked fairly well, for the most part - aside from a couple of frights when someone forgot to read the mail.

Amazingly enough, I haven't had this issue (I've been using the HIMS prefix all though my time in Providence, Great Wildlands, and Insmother). To be fair, there were a lot of people who named their ships "USS ______" or "HMS _______" so they may have figured it was just some wierd variation/mispelling of the latter.

Character limit is too short as it is. Don't wanna waste 4 characters on a prefix D:

For anything larger than a Frigate I have *two* prefixes.  Also, like Merdaneth, if the enemy wishes to study my losses and record the name of this ship at the time of it's destruction, they will learn what my fit is just from the name.  I highly doubt any of them do so, however.

All of my ships dont carry a 'prefix' per se but they do follow a naming convention.

IE:
- Trinity's Pride (Archon Carrier)
- Trinity's Shadow (Widow Black-Ops)
- Trinity's Courage (Absolution Command-Ship)

I use the second word to designate purpose, and the first to identify it as a Mashtori ship  8)

I used to use a few different prefixes but I can't remember them anymore.

Standard KP-V prefix is HMVS (His Magesty's Vanguard Ship; thanks Jakiin!).

Similar to Math, I'll have a set name for a particular hull-type.

Agreed though, that when flying solo, an "RP" tag is like a bucket of chum in the water. I had a talk not too long ago with a pilot who was watching me run a mission in his SB. My Crusader's name, "HMVS Bloodwing" had drawn his attention and he was wondering at the meaning. I explained the prefix and that "Bloodwing" was due to the nice red racing stripes.

For the rest of my time in that area though i changed the name to "Ham Sammich" and didn't draw any further interest from the locals.
