This kind of event can turn people into bitter vets that stop caring because their dreams are crushed.

One of the biggest illusions that players work under is the fact that they think that whatever their character does in game actually matters on any level.
Be it any npc faction or npc in the whole cluster, there is nothing you can do to them.
Only people you can actually affect are the other players, but even they can make themselves completely immune to whatever you do with minimum effort.
All the goals that you can strive towards within the game are worthless.

Therefore I must echo the sentiments of Rodj.

It's the journey that should be the prime motivator, not the goal.

I think most can agree that the journey taken is the reward in itself. What is deceptive about this style of narration, as opposed to just being a news item or a video file, is that it inhabits the game world. The assumption that an event in-game provides an opportunity for player input is a fair one, and the realization that it is not is entirely expected, especially when assets are placed at risk.

Whether the inability to act in this event was anticipated by CCP or not is uncertain, but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say they probably didn't expect it. Or maybe they did. Who knows?

My only suggestion to the designers of live world events would be to focus less on npcs and more on encouraging players to take sides and kill each other instead of everyone trying to blob for phat lewt or the 'glory' of a sansha kuvakei killmail.

Would pro-Matari pilots have complained about Jamyls lolhax weapon?
We did anyhow tbh.

Then again, so did the Amarrians.

True, just not to the extent as if we'd been with the fleet that was hit :)

I say be happy CCP let the players join in with the event instead of releasing a video or saying 'the excrement hit the extrusion device as Sansha ships omgwtfbbq Yulai.'

True. I will take this railroaded event any day above having to read events unfolding while the server is down (Empyrean Age and Apocrypha comes to mind). Serious people, you have to be pleased sometimes.

I didn't feel part of most of the events I was at though.

One of them, it felt like 55/45, and at times 45/55, and I felt \o/

another it was like 80/20 and I was :\

subsequent ones, it felt 95/5 and then 99.9/0.1 and I was "eh, why am i here?"

Maybe I'm just too easily distracted, but the more one sided the events became, Regardless of who was winning, the less I felt part of anything.

Some interesting points.  I think a lot of the RPers would perhaps just like a bit of a clearer picture on what they can and cannot influence.

Obviously incursions are going to happen no matter what we do. BUT, it might have been interesting to have a few branching story lines to that end-point, with room for intervention and changes along the way.

For example perhaps the severity and locations for incursions could be direct results of how well each bloc 'performs' during the lead up Actor events.  So say, the Amarr-bloc fails miserably to stop a major attack, and the Republic stops their attack cold, resulting in a larger and more frequent incursion into the Empire after patch launch.

It's a tough subject, we like to feel that we can have some impact on the greater story, but this is generally not the case.  Anyone who remembers Jamyl dying in space during the last player-driven succession trials, and then having her retconned onto the throne can attest to that.

I do have to say on a side note, that I"m extremely happy for all the old-school Sansha RPers, it must feel fantastic to be getting so much PF love from the main storyline, and getting a chance to participate. Very happy for you all.

I think this explains a lot of the sentiments here. Ask yourself, if the node hadn't cracked, would there be this much displeasure with the outcome? Sansha still would have 'won' IC, because that's the way it had to go. (Within certain parameters.) But those opposed still could've dropped some antimatter in his face, and vice versa for those supporting, if that's what they enjoy.

But it did crack. And so OOC, everybody lost.

Just to clarify: I can totally get whining about the node cracking. It's just the "OMG the Sansha incursions happened regardless of what we did" that I found a bit... off.

Could CCP not simply create two alternate endings and results? Players win, this happens, CCP wins and this happens. Isn't that how it is supposed to be. There was talk that the narrative sometimes requires that the story go a certain way, but in a "sandbox" environment its not supposed to do that.

In any combative event, there are always variables and the outcome will always varies. What CCP is doing doesnt require players, if they are going to roll this way then they should just put out a storyline video, like a TV show of the story arc they are running. It would be alot more entertaining for the players, and we dont have to walk away from these "RP Events" feeling robbed.

Exactly. I'd take a "railroaded" live event arc over the way they made Empyrean Age changes any day.

I'll take a live event which doesn't log me out for 45 minutes, yeah. If we could at least SHOOT and then lose, may not be an issue.
