PVE vs PVP vs RP
« on: 28 Dec 2010, 03:17 »

Would you rather blow up some of your enemies unlimited number of NPCs, or would you rather blow up a semi-immortal capsuleer who is going to blow up thousands of your own faction's unlimited number of NPCs?

Discuss.

I'd rather fight those who I can actually interact with. But different strokes...

Capsuleers scream/whine better when they explode.

Serious question here. I often hear it's more important to kill NPCs, but then I also hear that capsuleers are able to kill lotsa friendly NPCs and therefore should be a priority target, if anything to just slow them down.

A fleet of NPCs constitute a certain amount of ISK, threat and power depending on it's composition. Also a giant heapton of enemy combatant lives. An enemy capsuleer will most likely constitute a similar amount of ISK unless flying faction kit, a great deal higher threat and power.

In sheer numbers, the enemy capsuleer is the greatest value target. The downsides would be that it's a higher risk target and the capsuleer can return to the field reasonably sharpish. The upsides is that this means you can eliminate a fairly gigantic amount of enemy resources in sheer ISK value, repeatedly.

If I can disrupt the workings of a whole corp (or even Alliance) through wardecs and other kinds of warfare, I've engineered a far greater blow to the faction's power both planetbound and in space than months of missioning will ever do.

Also, come on... who the hell enjoys mission-running when the alternative is some PvP against a proper RP target?

It is an interesting question...perhaps it is circumstantial. If there are Caldari capsuleers, for example, that actively work against the Federation, taking out NPC convoys or whatever, then it's worth engaging them...if they just trade? Probably not.

I think one of the issues is that there is a stigma against PvE having any meaning in RP...because of "omg lolcarebear". PvP is "l33t" and earns you respect in RP, or something.

Honestly, I don't think of the whole PvP/RP/PvE thing like that, I just do what's fun and usually that means a healthy mix of all 3.

QFT. And they tend to drop better loot than your average npc. Can only get bounties for their pods though, if they have been nice enough to gather one up! :P

But really, what Milo said, healthy mix of it all.

The question presupposes that one's RP revolves around the violent defense of a NPC faction. Which holds for many RPers, but certainly not all.

While the advanced age of my computer and brain means my participation in PVP is not as high as some others, I agree that a blend of all three is best for my personal enjoyment of Eve.

If you want to target carebear mission runner corps with your war decs instead of PvP companies, just go ahead, you don't need our permission.  :P

But seriously, most people's in-game experience is that 'shooting NPCs doesn't matter' (besides filling one's wallet. And honestly, there isn't yet any game mechanic in which shooting NPCs does matter besides filling one's wallet.

From the perspective, killing capsuleers has more effect that killing NPCs. Even then killing capsuleers matters much less than tarnishing their reputation, since killing capsuleers primarily inflicts monetary damage, and thus the effect of such kills depends highly on the damage done vs. the monetary reserves of the target.

This means, all other things being equal, poor capsuleers should be your primary target.

Exactly.

As for the initial question, none of the above. They're both futile violence for the sake of violence. Damn psychotic eggers.

It isn't about "respect". Ditch the counterstrike mentality. It is about principle, and at least in my mind, principle is the most important aspect of RP.

Esna will happily admit he prefers capsuleers because they offer a better, more challenging fight. That said, the only faction he really wants to shoot at is Blood Raiders, and there's a decided lack of Blooder capsuleers to pew.
The others he just shoots because A, they fire first, or B, he has reason to believe they will/are endanger(ing) someone or something he cares about. Beyond that, they can go do their own thing. This goes for both capsuleers and NPCs, although with the other capsuleers there's also a third factor - they're willing, he's wiling, let's go.

I like the implications of Gallentians being punched in the face by walking up to a Minmatar as they so freely use another person's culture as a fad.

Whichever makes more sense in the situation, really. Which depends on stuff like what are those NPCs up to that are about to be shot by me or the Evil Amarrians, and what else could I be doing meanwhile.

Generally I like shooting pirates, though.
