We have a lot of player created threats, content and discussion in here, so you might feel a bit of information overload as you start, however I really recommend starting at some basics and working from there. Take your time, and don't sweat it! Who does your character work for, why, loyalities and citizenship? Family? From there, you can start to flesh out.
For roleplay, consider your character and their motivations. Some basic likes and dislikes. Get yourself in "The Summit" and "Intergalactic Summit" in game channels and start interacting. Take cues from other players on the basics, such as '/me' emotes for performing actions. It'll also be handy to check out the official in character forums for posting styles, event announcements and the like, you can find it over here:
