Hello Ms.  Aspenstar,

I would like to make a submission to your Writing Contest;

My clan upholds the oral tradition of communal storytelling, so it's quite perculiar for me to put something like this into writing!

This is one of my favourite Thukker poems. It's usually accompanied by drums, to represent the plainsbeasts as they run. The children take it turns to speak the last two stanzas of each verse and the whole circle joins in on the refrain.

Seven beasts thundered,
Across the plains,
Beneath the sun.
One fell to the hound’s jaws,
Slaughtered and devoured.

As six beasts thundered,
Across the plains,
Beneath the sun.
One allowed himself to be yoked
Content to live in his master’s stable.

Then five beasts thundered,
Across the plains,
Beneath the sun.
Four found pasture, green and lush
Content to graze within their own hold.

Now only one beast thunders,
Across the plains,
Beneath the sun.
Strong, free and wild
Never to be tamed.

The written word really doesn't do it any justice, but I do hope you find it as enjoyable as my clan does, and find it a worthy submission!

Yours faithfully,

Karynn Denton
