Killing Heroes
« on: 24 Jul 2013, 19:11 »

I wrote this story a while ago based largely on conversations we had here about capsuleer immortality and the like.  I wanted to try and capture just how vulnerable the capsuleer was to the well connected/funded threat.

Quote from: Killing Heroes

The target's name was everywhere; another hero of the war, ace capsuleer, an emperyean.  What it didn't show was how often he awoke in a clone vat not far from here.  But his rising fame was a threat.  He might decide he has an opinion, like so many before him.  Numerous capsuleers, the soulless infomorphs, developed and voiced their opinions too publically, threatening the cause and their usefulness to it.  Whether it was a famous Luminaire General capsuleer spouting off about the threats to liberty that the Black Eagles posed or a State created capsuleer going over to the Guristas, both had the potential to threaten the cause, whatever it may be.

The computer chimed "Approaching destination - Resurrection Level, cleared personnel only - Warning Hard Vac - Warning - Microgravity"

"Access Code: Joan Belestraange Whiskey Tango 46," the young woman said, "Pass Phrase: Only the Dead have seen the end of War."

She was already in her suit, thermal ghost mode activated.  She had been hired to come fix a particular unit that had malfunctioned, to investigate why a data-buffer had continiously been skipped.  She smiled, she knew exactly why it was "skipping."

The doors to the dark enclosure slipped open to reveal the humming collection of biomechanisms, wetware mainframes, recursive computing modules, nano-factories, and various other technological marvels.  Conduits ran underneath the floor boards to each clone tubes.  Jovian-design capsuleer pods rested snuggly underneath most tubes.  A few had recently been used and would not be replaced for a few days as they began to create their next clone.

She pushed off into the microgravity of the room, the light of the elevator shining behind her as she floated into the room before the doors closed sliently behind her and she was all alone.  As she floated towards the middle of the room, she checked her targets location - light years away in the warzone - hunting his brother and sister emperyeans for the glory of this or that.

She moved to the malfunctioning unit and set to repairing it at a steady pace.  The target's behavior had been studied for weeks, she had time to make sure it all went to plan.  She may even get to watch the immortal die.

I'm interested to see the rest, but I've already had a tech-gasm at the realization of how cloning would work.

I love how you've completely removed the need for actual technicians to handle the fresh and vulnerable clone at all. They wake up in the clone vat and soon get literally flushed down a pipe to their next capsule. Very hardcore sci-fi Matrix feel to that. I love it.

There are many things that I've wondered about the whole cloning process and such and this is a very interesting and awesome look into a cloning facility.

Definitely would like to see more  :D
