That the Intaki Liberation Front's "rampant griffin" corp logo was adopted after the pro-Federation corp The Durandal Organization created a logo using motifs similar to the ILF's original logo?

Slavery parallels: slavery on Earth
« on: 21 Sep 2011, 10:54 »

I was quite surprised to come across a slavery message today and learn that in Mauritania slavery was only made criminal in 2007, and an estimated 20% of the population of that country still lives in (hereditary) slavery. Also, there is a religious imperative for the slave owners to take care of their slaves.

Out of pure ignorance; is slavery practiced anywhere outside of Africa to this day, aside from underground illegal human trafficking?

Depends a lot on how you define "slavery" (this is quickly becoming an IGS debate! :-D).

There are quite a few illegal immigrants all over who have to do what their "protectors" say. Then you have marriages of east asian women who are trained to listen to their husbands because their life at home sucks much more. Etc.

Somewhere in there, "slavery" starts. Depending on where exactly, there is "slavery" all over the place. :-/

There's recently been a police raid on a 'Traveler's' home that found people using others as pretty much slaves.

Asia has a flourishing white slavery ring, mostly eastern European women from eastern Russia and other less fortunate regions end brought as slaves to Japan, Korea and China and other regions. They come for work, but usually end up in forced prostitution and other such tasks. Though it's not exclusive or limited to women, race or the sex industry, but it is relatively visible and prominent side of it.

The link Lal posted is worth the watch too. Slavery is very real in the modern day world.

If we define it as the literal purchase and sale of people as property (rather than merely being treated as such due to social situation), then it's illegal pretty much everywhere. It's also the third largest [insert noun that escapes me but means income source for interational crime] behind drug smuggling and weapons trafficking, and IIRC human trafficking is the fastest growing. Rather horrifying examples can be found from eastern Europe to east Asia to North America.

And I'm going to stop before I go off on a tangent that's not at all related to EVE and will take up a few pages.

Modern variants of slavery, I know those are everywhere. Where there's an inequality in power, you have the stage set for slavery-like abuses.

However, I wasn't aware there was still (so recently) a form of traditional institutional slavery, with people openly calling others 'their slaves' and not having to be afraid to be punished by law because it isn't illegal yet.
