Author Topic: Statistical Analysis and the State of Faction Lore YC118-120  (Read 6448 times)

It's not a new idea - some factions get more lore attention than others. I wanted to know if that was best attributed to random chance or if there was some way to use data to understand the issue better.

Note: these numbers are accurate for articles up to 13-12-2018, since that's when I did the maths. I limited my attention to the past three years of articles. That's about the span of time I've been roleplaying, so that's really what I'm interested in.

First, I had to assign a category to every news article. I decided to break them up into five categories: Empire, State, Federation, Republic, and Other. My rationale was to prioritise the primary actors, setting, and affected parties in determining category over which faction was mentioned in the headline. This usually made the true centre of an article apparent in cases where an article was ostensibly about more than one faction.

This motivated my decision to classify the Caldari Prime and Mordu's Legion articles as "other," as they concern themselves the most with Mordu's Legion rather than either the State or Federation. This also motivated my decision to classify the Kyonoke Inquest articles as "other."

A flaw with my classification system can be seen in the Federation category, which is inflated. I had issues with articles about The Scope. They should all be under the "other" category. In the years when I collected my data, Scope had become an independent media conglomerate. Additional issues were posed by the Kyonoke storyline. Several articles which were ostensibly about the Federation were actually centring around State parties and State consequences, and should have been labelled as such. This means that the relationship between faction and article number in reality should be even stronger than what I calculated.

Here is how I divided articles into five categories from YC118-YC120, a span of three years:

At this point in my process, I was struck by how many articles fell into the "other" category - news and lore that mostly concerned itself with justifying gameplay changes, like Upwell articles. I didn't do the maths at the time, but it's visible that "other" is the largest category, and that's by no small margin.

Tallies:
YC120
empire: 15 articles
state: 6 articles
federation: 6 articles
republic: 5 articles
(other, excluded: 23, 41.81% of YC120 true total articles)
32 observations
YC119
Empire: 6
State: 24
Fed: 10
Rep: 5
(other, excluded: 43, 48.86% of YC119 true total articles)
45 observations
YC 118 Articles for Factions:
Empire: 13
State: 2
Fed: 3
Republic: 3
(other, excluded: 43, 67.18% of YC118 true total articles)
21 observations
total number of articles per faction from yc118-120
empire: 34
state: 32
fed: 19
republic: 13
(other, excluded: 109)
total number of faction articles/observations: 98
average number of (faction) articles per year:
empire: 11.333
state: 10.666
fed: 6.333
republic: 4.333
(other, excluded: 36.333)
grand mean (average number of faction articles a year): 8.166
Now, it might be tempting to immediately point fingers at the Empire and cry bias. Please do not do that. I think it's more important to note that no faction gets 12 articles a year/one article a month. In an ideal world, we would be able to claim that. Note, also, that these are averages for a year. This means that if a faction got 12 articles in one month for a storyline, it would be presented the same as one article every month. I don't believe that it's unreasonable to ask for twelve articles per faction per year. That comes out to 48 articles, and we've been getting at least 48 news articles; they just haven't been faction articles.

It does make me wonder if the existence of Upwell is killing faction lore. Prior to Upwell, these gameplay changes were likely to have come from a faction or faction-aligned corporation, though maybe it would have come from CONCORD or pirates or precursors, too. But to answer that question, I'd have to structure my data differently, so let's just stick with faction-to-faction numbers for the moment.

In this next part, I use ANOVA (analysis of variance) to determine if faction (my nominal independent variable) has a consequence on number of articles (my interval dependent variable,) or if the differences in article numbers could be explained by random chance. I start by stating my research and null hypothesises. I decide what level of certainty I want my results to have, and then I do maths to determine the differences in numbers of articles within factions from YC118-120, then between them. I do maths that compare those numbers to each other, and then I compare that value to a threshold value determined by the level of certainty I want to have about my results. I finish by determining the strength of the relationship between factions and number of articles published.
H1: There is a relationship between faction and number of articles.
H0: There is no relationship between faction and number of articles.
We'll go with a .1 alpha because I’m not feeling confident. This means that we want to be 90% certain of a relationship.
degrees of freedom between = (number of categories 4 -1) = 3, degrees of freedom within = (number of observations 98 – number of categories 4) = 94

Hell, I reject the null all the way up to alpha .01, which is 99% certainty.
Sum of Squares Between/Total Sum of Squares=103.77/405.419=.2559
25.59% of the total variation in news articles is explained by faction. This is a strong relationship.
For those of you who don't care for all the work, the numbers suggest that there is a relationship between faction and news articles published with a certainty of 99%, and that faction can be used to explain 25.59% of the differences in numbers. Remembering that I accidentally inflated the Federation numbers, 25.59% is lower than what it likely is in reality.

There are some limitations to the data. The data cannot tell us if the articles have been fun or enjoyable. The data cannot tell us if one faction had more/better storylines than another, or if the articles were all fluff. The data does not account for live events. The data does not reconcile well with articles that may seriously involve more than one faction. The data doesn't accommodate other sources of lore, like chronicles or fiction portal pages. The data cannot say if one faction roleplay/lore community found an article for another faction more useful than the faction it belongs to.

But it does tell us that:
 • Most (and sometimes the majority) of lore articles are not faction articles.
 • Some factions get more articles than others and that's not due to random chance.
 • Over a fourth of the variation in numbers of news articles published per faction is explained by faction.
 • The Republic has had the most consistent and lowest numbers of articles.
 • The State has had the most variation in numbers of articles.
 • The Empire has had the most articles and the second-most variation in numbers of articles.

I think I'll continue trying to figure out where lore is at and what has happened to it with statistical analysis. I'm planning on comparing gameplay lore justification articles to factional articles next, and then I'm considering looking at chronicles.

What is the sum of squares? I am not familiar with that term. It is being used to determine if faction bias is consistent over the years? Is that right?

So, you might notice that's there's two types of ss (sum of squares) in my maths: sum of squares within categories and sum of squares between categories.

In ssw, I'm doing exactly what you said - I'm subtracting the actual number of articles in that year from the average number of articles for the faction. That gives me a number which indicates how much that year is "off" of the average number of articles. Is this an unusually high year? Is this an unusually low year? How unusual is it - to what extent is it unusual? We can put a number on how weird the individual years are for a faction, compared to the average. So, yes! Exactly what you said! In the sum of squares within categories, I'm checking to see if the numbers are consistent inside a faction.

Empire|
11.333-15-=-3.667
This means that in YC120, the Empire has had 3.6 articles more than usual compared to its own average - that the average number of articles for the Empire is 3.6 less than what the Empire has gotten in YC120.

Then we square that number to get rid of the negative. When we want to figure out how un-average all the individual data points of the Empire news articles are compared to its own average, we want to be able to see how big that is on a scale that starts at 0 (the yearly numbers are all exactly the average) and going up from there. After we've done this entire thing for every faction, we add it together to figure out how weird all the article numbers for factions are when compared to their own faction average.

In ssb, I take the average number of articles per faction for year, and I subtract the total average number of articles (the grand mean) for factions per year, to figure out how many more or fewer news articles a faction gets compared to the normal number of articles per year.

Empire|
11.333-8.166=3.167|3.167

This means that the Empire gets 3.1ish articles more than the average faction per year. Again, I square that number, because I don't want to have any negatives when I'm determining how much every faction differs from the average. And then we add all those squared numbers together to figure out how weird all the faction averages are compared to each other.

Also: Squaring is a surefire way to uniformly play with both positive and negative numbers and always get a positive result. It makes the squared sums look really, dramatically different!

Does that make sense?

A fun read and interesting exercise. :applauseemoji:

So, still parsing the numbers! Thanks for the additional explanation, Tressith! My guess is a lot of my initial comments will be things you've thought of already. ;)

One thing is that some arcs exist on an axis of conflict between two factions. While clearly there end up being imbalances in agency and complexity of presentation, some arcs do allow for inter-faction play; using the latest uprising arc as an example, deeper drilling-down into Amarr factional interplay and court intrigue contrasts with a fairly simple Matari 'we come for our people' message, but we've certainly seen a lot of interaction on both sides. Contrast this with, say, Lirsautton or the intra-State lawsuit shenanigans, which don't exist along any particular fault line. It might be worth ISD and CCP making more of an effort to allow for nuanced inter-faction play with arcs like this.

Likewise, I'd be inclined to say that while all factions participated in the Kyonoke Inquest arc, it's predominantly a Caldari-Gallente story, given the shenanigans gotten into by the Templis Dragonaur, FIO, and all the rest; the articles around core events are not purely Caldari in impact, then. While 2017 certainly looks to be a very good year for Caldari stuffs, the high concentration of articles for the Kyonoke arc and its petering out unfinished in May means that the high article count didn't really have a meaningful impact on the world in the end. I'll admit this is part of the motivation for ARC's various lawsuits. :P

On Upwell: while Upwell's domination by ORE and Mordu's Legion put it into the 'other' category, the organization has corporations from all the various states. Right now, Upwell's portrayed as monolithic, a bit of a black box. What if CCP were to do more to explore the inner workings of it, or to empower the smaller players, portray the politics that are involved? For instance, Propel Dynamics is a State corporation that wears Ishukone livery but has major funding from KK, Wiyrkomi, Perkone, and the State and Region Bank, and was evidently an important contributor to the latest Upwell navigation push. Exploring that'd be fun! Likewise, Eifyr & Co is an Upwell member: but they're also tied with Arek'jalaan and with the Sisters of EVE ship design effort. Exploring the shadiness there might be very interesting thing indeed.

On cross-faction articles, I'd love to see more that muddies the water for the traditional cross-faction 'grr' play. While grr and conflict are important content drivers, muddying the water gives players more room to explore their own stories. For instance, what if MIO and FIO cooperated on cross-border Blood Raider purges? The differences between GalFed and Amarr responses to Sanist stuff would be put on display, and it might allow for a less-utopian expression of what happens when the normally open Federation is forced to deal with the demons of others, like actual Blood terrorism. ;)

Lastly, I do wonder how much the numbers would change if this were stretched over years progressively further into the past. YC117, for instance, was heavy with Drifter and Amarr stuff; YC116 had Templis Dragonaur shenanigans early in the year, and SoE/Sleeper stuff in the latter part with Thera; YC115 had the Midular assassination, Dust stuff, Caldari Prime, so is a giant mixed bag.

Would it be fair to say, though, that YC115 was the most recent really good year for Minmatar events/lore?

If that's the standard we use for "good year for Minmatar events/lore", we're pretty fucked.

Hi, Makoto! I didn't want to get into a qualitative analysis, but I think you're right that this could be improved by one.

I don't think you're wrong here, but I'd hesitate to use the Kahah fallout as a template for FedSta, because the relationship between ImpRep vs FedSta is profoundly different. If the Fed fell into chaos, you wouldn't see the State arm up and prepare to invade. Likewise, you wouldn't see the opposite.

I think it's important to note that in these things, point of origin and point of conclusion are important. Where an arc starts (and this is less a physical location in New Eden than it is an actor, some entity which starts moving) and where it ends (again, more a receptacle that receives motion than a physical location) has more lore permanence than a name drop or a pit stop. Some factions are more "active" than others. They either are, or they're host to, entities which start things and do things and have more consequence.

I don't believe this is actually reflective of the themes inherent in the lore of different factions as it currently exists. I'm pretty sure this is just because there's not a lot of faction articles being written, and it's never been fairly divided.

I wonder how much your perspective has been informed by your ability to participate in the Fanfest LARP. I admit jealousy. I would extremely disagree with your assessment that the Kyonoke arc was Gallente and Caldari, as opposed to Caldari - though, as you can see, I did divide it up like that for the sake of the analysis, because there's some room for debate there. Again, I refer back to the concept of actors and receivers; the action started in the State, with the actor being Templis, and ended in the State.

Here, too, it would be useful to go into depth as a concept. Imagine - I might do something like this, but it would be a pain in the ass and take a lot of time - Imagine that I went across each faction's core fiction portal pages. Imagine I looked at the pages and selected "key words" for each faction, and I would assign a numerical weight to each key word. I might go into the Caldari State core fiction portal pages and decide that our key words and their weights would be:
Caste: 3
Seituoda: 4
Creche: 3
CBD: 1
Caldari State Armed Forces: 2

Here is my rationale for these weights: articles about the Caldari State Armed Forces or affecting the CSAF will likely have a consequence on an entire generational swath, given that all State citizens will serve in them in their lifetime. The concept of a creche, a caste, and the consequences of things that impact them may not be so far reaching, but they do have an immediate, personal, intimate consequence to a subset of the State that does interact with it to belong to one. The Seituoda Great Family is a very specific example of a small population which makes decisions that impact every aspect of the lived experience inside the State, and they are one of two examples we have of that group. CBD is the lowest, though still on the list, because as a Mega their behaviours/decisions/attitudes have an immediate, personal, and intimate consequence on a wide swath of the Caldari State population, but an article that mentions CBD is pretty likely to just be namedropping.

I talk about populations because, as roleplayers with interest in faction lore, consequences on populations are what we make our stories from.

Now, in contrast, here's an example of key words and how I might weigh them for the Federation:

Senate: .5
Member state: 2
Mannar: 3
Identity: 1
Artificial Habitat: 1

The Federation Senate has nearly no immediate, personal, or intimate consequences on almost any portion of the Federation population. At most 20% of that population votes, and the Senate's jurisdiction is set up in such a way that even if it wanted to have a consequence like that, it would really be a district or a member state that would cause the consequence to happen and decide what it was, and that would likely be after several months or years. I rate member state as a key word higher because it is a very specific and niche concept, which has immediate, personal, and intimate consequence for a subset of the population. There are few references to member states (individually or as a concept) in news articles. I rate the Mannar highest because they have a fair amount of lore and lore consequence on the fiction portal, but they're almost never mentioned in articles, and they're still 10-15% of the Federation's population. I dropped artificial habitat on there because while it's not immediately a Federation-specific piece of lore, the Federation supposedly mastered the science on it and makes the highest quality examples of them, so examples of them and uses of them will reveal something about the Federation. Besides that, they're niche, and they're not referenced very much, although they should have this (immediate, personal, intimate) consequence on a subset of the Federation population.
I think that's enough examples for you to see where my priorities would be. Then I go through articles and I count up all the key words and assign in their weights. We could theoretically determine the "depth" an article goes into a faction's lore. (Separate from the quality. I have the *worst* article on creches as an example of how depth doesn't mean quality, if anyone's interested.)

That's when we come to this fact: you cannot approach writing each individual faction the same way. The FIO is a shallow example of Federation lore, and the majority of the Federation population doesn't think about it on a day-to-day basis. Whereas Hyasyoda (and of course, the Pit) is a deeper example of State lore, because it has more consequence for a greater amount of people on a more immediate, personal, and intimate level.

If you wanted to write an interaction between FedSta that had equal depth for both sides, you might look at these keywords and generate this headline: Seituoda Repudiates CBD's Targeted Marketing Campaign inside Mannar Member State

I... I would read that article. Anyway, that's why I would argue that the Kyonoke storyline is mostly just a Caldari State storyline.

If this happened, I would say that Upwell would suddenly become faction lore, and we could divide up Upwell articles - or, ideally, faction lore would be so healthy it would be pointless to divide. I say this with the qualification that any lore impacting Caldari State corporations is automatically more in depth than lore that mentions the corporations of other factions, so even if Upwell's faction-to-faction split was equal, the Caldari State may still come out with more usable and deeper lore. Propel Dynamics is where some portion of the Caldari population was born, will be educated, work, live, and die. Corps is mother. Corps is father. Eifyr & Co's employees, meanwhile, are probably applying to a new, better-paying job as we speak. Maybe several different jobs.

You'll additionally note CONCORD goes into the "other" category. It doesn't help that Upwell is monolithic, but even if it wasn't, some of its articles might still be "other."

The differences between GalFed and Amarr responses to Sanist stuff would be put on display, and it might allow for a less-utopian expression of what happens when the normally open Federation is forced to deal with the demons of others, like actual Blood terrorism. ;)

Can't really do anything but agree here. I like your idea. We should be seeing different kinds of cross faction play in general, something more than just "I've remembered I HATE you" conflict. Again, this is a place where I would say FedSta and ImpRep are two different formulas, and they should be treated as such - to repair the damage that was caused by TEA, we should be getting lore developments that make it clear that the FedSta relationship is not a zero sum game. That is to say, we should be getting cross-factional lore that demonstrates that what's good for the Fed can be good for the State, and what's bad for the Fed can be bad for the State. But that's a separate issue, I think, from the fact that we're not getting enough faction lore articles and there's serious discrepancies in the numbers. Maybe it's a solution.

I want to do this, but we're missing large amounts of news articles from the community site. I don't know if anything prior to YC116 has every news article that was published during that time. Besides which, the further back we go, the more we get into live events, which were never catalogued - a live event that concludes a series of news articles but doesn't have a matching news article would make the data seriously dishonest.

Would it be fair to say, though, that YC115 was the most recent really good year for Minmatar events/lore?

I'll check this and compare it to our current averages.

This seems like a ton of work! I'd be really interested in the results over a longer period (and for subsets like pre-, during, and post-TEA) but that seems impractical. It does seem like it confirms the impression, though I was surprised that the Republic scored so low. That might be because I haven't been paying as much attention to that side of things the last couple years. It does make some sense that the State ones vary because I think they tend to be clusters that are 'event driven' sometimes. The Amarr probably are too but there are enough of those that it probably averages out more evenly.

Regardless, seems like the main thing is that 'Other' articles outpace faction articles. My perception of that would probably be that in the last few years (and maybe before that) there was a tendency to publish IC news almost exclusively for game mechanic or 'big events' reasons (I'd put Kyonoke under that umbrella). A lot of the stuff in the last year or so? has been more similar to the old school day-to-day news that we used to get. I wonder, should that continue, if it would look different if this year and the next couple years were analyzed down the road.

Mrmrmrmmm. Fine. I'll see what happens if I expand to cover every news article for every year. But be warned that we're missing relevant data points!

On the most recent best year for news articles for the Minmatar Republic, it does seem like YC115 would be it. Though it comes in third place for that year...
YC117
Empire: 24
State: 4
Federation: 9
Republic: 7
44 observations

YC116
Empire: 2
State: 20
Federation: 5
Republic: 3
30 observations

YC115
Empire: 6
State:66
Federation: 43
Republic: 32
147 observations
Still working. Joy, I'm 1/3rd of the way through categorising and tallying.

First this seems like a hell of a lot of work, so many thanks and congrats on that.

Second

though I was surprised that the Republic scored so low.

Really? When ..

On the most recent best year for news articles for the Minmatar Republic, it does seem like YC115 would be it. Though it comes in third place for that year...

The best year minnie lore is still third in the list?

If that's the standard we use for "good year for Minmatar events/lore", we're pretty fucked.

We have been fucked for a very long time .. TEA I would guess and most of that lore would have been from the Amarrian side.

 • Shes mad but shes magic, theres no lie in her fire

Actually to my memory there is comparatively little Empire news during the events of TEA. It heavily focuses on the Minmatar in Yulai and then invading, and the Caldari in Malkalen followed by their invasion.

I’m not at my computer so I can’t quote the exact numbers, but this is true!
