I started out in a bunch of portacabins near a pig farm and ended up working in one of the bigger studios in Europe. I certainly remember the kind of External Producer you're talking about, Lyn, but for me that phenomenon really went away in the 2000's when I started working second party for one of the giants and was totally gone when we went first party.

I kinda don't remember much about independent games development, except for the panic around getting funded and staying funded.
