I was actually more getting at that I've seen people who have characters who -are- therapists/psychiatrists. (In fact, Morwen's gone to a session with one of those characters, though she wasn't there for herself - barring a couple things, she's fairly 'normal' by our standards in that sense.)

One of them has posted in this thread, but I don't think they have the time/patience to make a 'business' out of it, so I'm not going to name names unless they want to out themselves. :)

Morwen's Law:
1) The number of capsuleer women who are bisexual is greater than the number who are lesbian.
2) Most of the former group appear lesbian due to a lack of suitable male partners to go around.
3) The lack of suitable male partners can be summed up in most cases thusly: interested, worth the air they breathe, available; pick two.

I tried to do that on Nola once, and I got three types of replies:

  "Can you analyze me...naked?"
 "Enough about me. Let's talk about you."
 "Yeah, my girlfriend left me...WHY AREN'T YOU HELPING ME?!! YOU SUCK!"

I also got a few OOC requests, at which point I decided to cancel that project. >_<

  • Capsuleers are terrible at paying their bills. Probably because RPers are always LFRP anyway, so the idea of paying another RPer for their time is a bit ... weird. However, six hours of intermittently typing 'and how do you feel about that?' isn't the kind of RP most people are LF
  • Whatever is wrong with the character is at the mercy of the player's understanding/ interpretation of psychological issues. Without some kind of OOC understanding of how the therapy is supposed to progress, the therapist spends a lot of time stabbing around in the dark in the hope they'll eventually strike what the other player has decided is the 'solution' (which may or not bear any relationship to what actually might be relevant therapy IRL). However, if you discuss OOC ly what is going to happen in the therapy, it sort of kills the point of RPing the therapy
  • You know how your own dreams are interesting but other people's are tedious, especially when they insist on telling you about them at great length ('And then he drank a glass of milk!")? Yeah.

Good replies. They point some of the vague worries that were ratttling around in the back of my head rather precisely. Considering them, hanging up a metaphorical shingle and handling it full-immersion style does seem like it could be a bit of a challenge. I think I'll keep that aspect of the character on the back burner, to be taken out when the stars of opportunity, OOC trust, and general fortune align, and find other outlets for Iwan's Himmelstürmer tendencies.

Malcolm needs a therapist at times. Unfortunately, the last person that tried to be his therapist was podded just outside the Honor Guard's home station by Malcolm for being a pirate. >.>

On a more serious note, I agree that capsuleers could seriously use a dose of "normal" interaction now and again, and I imagine some capsuleers go to great lengths to ensure this happens. Mal, for instance, is RPed as spending a pretty significant time among his non-capsuleer corp-mates and employees (Part of that whole "don't lose your humanity" thing he has going on).

In character capsuleer therapists would be neat but I really don't envy the poor person RPing the therapist. :(

This. Anslo can't see a psychiatrist for :reasons: medically. Back in the day, he just killed wantonly, was general psychotic, and was just all around messed up.

When I took my Eve break, I explained this by saying Anslo took a break from capsuleering and lived with baseliners for a year or so. He'd pop in and out of Summit and fluid router channels now and then, but he mostly relegated himself to baseliners and understanding that when he blew a ship up for "fun," he wasn't just popping a pilot, he was killing a few hundred, if not a few thousand people. So in that respect, he got some humanity back.

Some.

Initially interpreted it as an OOC question!  Either way, if there's interest, could share findings from a study I conducted in 2008 on circa 400 self-selected EvE players ;)

That... would be very interesting indeed? What about in particular - their characters' preferences, or their OOC experiences with such?

I like the implications of Gallentians being punched in the face by walking up to a Minmatar as they so freely use another person's culture as a fad.
