Are you saying that we should be defensive 24/7? Such an odd view.

Anarchistic cynicism imo.

My point was to discuss about entertainment from an angle which I find interesting, and I agree that this perspective is not the opposite of anarchistic cynicism. However, I wouldn't say that there's something wrong with not staying alert 24/7.

But Vaari might agree, it isn't all bad.

Laughter, immersion and emotional shock are reactions which make people to lower their guard, and to become open for suggestion. If a consumer feels suspicious and disconnected from the platform, any indoctrination attempt would not work, obviously. For this reason it would be a bad idea and also completely unnecessary to state clearly what is the set of unquestioned premises behind a merchandize. Commercialism, consumerism, individualism, authoritarianism, values, ideals, gender roles, models of accepted behaviour and so on can all be incorporated into the entertainment so that it never feels like indoctrination. This is the normal state of affairs, works automatically and has probably remained the same since entertainment was invented. I don't see why things would be any different in a dystopia thousands of years in the future.
None of what you say here supports this:
Quote
Entertainment and media have only two purposes, to indoctrinate the masses and distract them.
What you are supporting would be a statement more like:

"Entertainment and media can be used to indoctrinate the masses and distract them.

There's a big difference between the two.  One implies entertainment is an invention of authoritarians in order to exert control.  The other implies authoritarians can co-opt entertainment to advance their agendas.

Here's an idea: Don't politicize every facet of life.

Now once again I ask how to continue on with the OP.

I'm presenting the concept that cultural icons in the Federation carry a great deal of political and social significance than they otherwise would have. In the Black Eagles chron, it was noted that "cultural icons" attended the summit with Foiritan that ultimately created the SDII.

This would contrast with what we have in the 21st century West, where celebrities are more something to laugh at. Instead, they carry a great deal of respect and immense prestige in the Gallentean world. This might be combined with the Gallentean habit for activism and philanthropy.

Fair enough. I was merely trying to elaborate on what to look for if one is interested in this layer of narrative, to answer the question below. Without consulting the artists, editors, producers and distributors, it is difficult to say which elements in each individual entertainment product are just accidental and which are not.
I don't se your point. Care to speak clearly?

Americanism

You use this word way more frequently than is actually applicable.

Ehh, yes. I'll echo that. Frankly, not everyone sees Gallente as inspired by modern America.

Also, Lallara went into his curmudgeon place again. Certainly indoctrination has its place from the viewpoint of the central government, but I think we can pretty much view the Federation as a place that glorifies individualism and eschews that kind of mob indoctrination. It's in all levels of society, from the member-states with their freedoms from the central bureaucracy down to the planetary governments being vastly varied in nature, all the way down again to unique individuals being likely glorified in the media.

Of course, there is a point where the apparent opposites of indoctrination vs individualism come together in yin and yang like fashion, with the indoctrination telling you to be individualistic... that paradox needs to be incorporated into a critical appraisal of the Federation.

Oddly, the struggle between centralization vs decentralization (so prevalent in current EU politics and in its own shape always present in US politics) seems to be largely (though not entirely) absent from the Federal political scene. I maintain that its because the Federation is pretty firmly in the decentralized camp these days.
