I play role-playing game because I like to have (the illusion) of choice.

I don't care if I'm being railroaded, as long as it is done subtly enough and leaves enough doubts.

If I want to enjoy a story where my choice doesn't matter, I'll go read a book or watch a movie. In terms of story-telling an EVE event just doesn't compare to those to.

This is part of the problem why I find mission boring. Doing mission doesn't really affect anything, no choice of mine has an impact on the world, win or lose, except for my wallet.

Even if an event is pre-scripted for one side to lose, there can still be interesting choices to be made, multiple ways of how to lose. It not about win/lose, its about being able to make a meaningful contribution to a story. I didn't sign up for eve to be used as a Red Shirt.

Every level of EVE is and has always been at the will of those who have influence on the production of the game. This does include the players, but individually they are insignificant no matter how notorious. It takes the demands of thousands of players to have any meaning comparable to CCP staff. Even those elected for CSM are tiny and it takes half a hurricane to collect any desire into something CCP can respond to.

CCP is even so influential that ideas that players have come with and the entirety of the community have come to accept faithfully can be completely changed ex post facto. The PF is our only guide, we can't exactly ask the storytellers every minute detail of the EVE universe. We are utter non-entities doomed to whatever CCP wants to call the sandbox at the time.

But... none of this matters. Who RPs for fame? EVE isn't going to be around forever, we only have the present and the relationships we have formed. People outside of EVE aren't going to give a shit and the moment CCP recognizes the influence of one player over another it'll be AURORA all over again.

Though the powers that be, with their almighty power of "Because I said so", impose on us events we have no hope of reshaping, they do us the far greater favor of providing us a common ground we're not allowed to disagree on. After that, we make our own stories and damn those who won't be a part of them.

I would have to say, if you enjoy a RP where you are given an illusion of choice, do not go to an event where it is clear from beginning that you will in all likelihood have no effect whatsoever on the outcome. Leave the node to the people who actually might enjoy it. ;)
