Subtle homage to Aria here?
« on: 27 Jun 2013, 13:57 »

I was reading the excellent evelopedia article on AI, when something in one paragraph stood out (emphasis mine):

Quote
Today, most AI research is aimed at improving weak AI. However, strong AI research continues to occur in secretive facilities across the cluster. Recent incidents, such as the Spectrum Breach, Code Aria Inquiry, and contact with the mysterious Sleeper drones, have renewed interest in strong AIs. One of the many subdivisions of the Arek’Jaalan program is dedicated to AIs.

Subtle homage to our own Aria Jenneth, or mere coincidence?

Code Aria was from the opening of the drone regions.

Pretty sure it's not an homage, as awesome as it would be. :P

Morwen's Law:
1) The number of capsuleer women who are bisexual is greater than the number who are lesbian.
2) Most of the former group appear lesbian due to a lack of suitable male partners to go around.
3) The lack of suitable male partners can be summed up in most cases thusly: interested, worth the air they breathe, available; pick two.

Hee-- yeah, I noticed that when it came out. As far as I know, it's nothing to do with me.

CCP has, over time, introduced canonical support for some of Aria's ideas, but it's never been clear whether that was because I was accurately reading the tenor of the setting or because I was influencing it. It's probably best that way, much as I don't mind a nice ego massage.

All of Eve's players are an influence for CCP to work with and draw inspiration from. Ship insurance came about because a player invented it. You never know where your fingerprints might end up.

I am more interested in the mention of Arek'Jaalan, though the AI article is probably written before they gave up upon trying to integrate the project with official lore.

Speaking of Arek'Jaalen: that is somethimes shortened as AJ. AJ ... Aria Jenneth's initials.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aria

Synopsis: An Aria is a form of music. It developed in two distinct forms: Binary Form and Ternary Form.

Rogue Drones and Binary:

http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Drone_Mind

Jovians (also Talocan, Sleepers) and Ternary:

http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Trinary_Data
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Unsecured_Frontier_Trinary_Hub

At the time, the use of "Aria" in "Code Aria" didn't quite make sense. In retrospect, it's possibly a hint of something else entirely. Remember, the Code Aria report was released a good 5-6 years ago. Later, the same themes were used to expand on some of the Sleeper/Rogue Drone lore. There are hints of a link between Sleeper Drones and Rogue Drones. This is heavily implied in the SoE Epic Arc with the "singing" Sleeper drone, mission names with "musical" connotations, and the Sleeper drone's song causing regular drones to go Rogue. These elements are expanded upon in Templar One (with incidents that can't be referenced as proof in an IC manner).

In other words, it's most likely not a reference to Aria Jenneth but to binary and ternary "Forms" evolving separately but along the same thematic lines.
