From the desk of Avalek Tinsou, MD, PhD:

Welcome to the living document that is the NEIH DMID Catalog, a veritable treasure trove and ever growing database of all that is immunology, infectious disease, virology, bacteriology, parasitology, mycology, and more. I and my colleagues wish to extend our deepest gratitude to all who have added and continue to add to this information trove. But most importantly, we want to thank you.

Because of a need for knowledge, a requirement for information, a demand to be in the know about all that is medicine, we have managed to transcend the boundaries of country, policy, religion, and creed in the form of this multi-national organization and database. Because of you, and other diligent and demanding professionals, students, and researchers, we have made this a reality. The DMID and other departments of the NEIH have taken great strides in developing their own public databases in the hopes of informing people of ALL Empires, and ensuring their medical care professionals are providing the best care a patient deserves.

May this database grow, and may it help to heal more than just physical ailments. It is our hope that this may be the first step to a more united Cluster through the ever-present power of curiosity and a desire to learn.

=======================================
EXPLANATION:
While brainstorming more about Anslo's background and how his story will progress and perusing the world building thread, I got to thinking about something that seems to be missing from Eve (or maybe it's just not bothered with much because no one cares).

Aside from the Kyonoke Pit Virus, there aren't any other viruses, bacteria, infections, or diseases that are spoken about in great depth. Sure you have Heth's slow disease but...I don't know much else about it aside from it being neurological. So, I had an idea! A small project to begin creating semi-scientifically realistic sicknesses that could effect people and potentially capsuleers. I'm not talking about hurrhurr zombies, but just something to add some flavor to the RP.

A lot of people have colonies and stations and outposts they use and put baseliners on to act as they need them to and grow the colony. But what's to stop something like a rogue microbe or bacteria from entering someone and playing havoc with their nervous system? Or say, cause infection of various pores in the body to create sores? Or even a neuroparasite?

I just wanted to get the idea out there and see what others think. Feedback? Ideas?

EXAMPLE: Chemolithoautotrophic organisms do not require organic compounds to facilitate a life providing metabolic reaction and can, therefore, survive on rock, metal, and other inorganic compounds. What would happen if a neuroparasitic chemolithoautotrophic organism could infect a subject and sustain itself on said subjects implants? Not necessarily capsuleer, but baseliner as well.

Augumen exposure from Heth case Derj disease is not the only one.

We also have Turit disease, and of course the Jovian disease (I know, this one is not really usable). And the Kyonoke pit virus too. And vitoxin.

Actually I think we already have a beginning of a good sample of (serious) diseases.

But anyway there is always good potential with different sciencey things as long as you keep it local and reasonable. I made it myself a central part of the RP of my character and that has proved to have provided quite a lot of RP opportunities (though I may have overplayed it in the past, advice from experience : do not overplay it).

Well Anslo isn't going to be leading this...might have to be a more 'proper' and credible alt. But definitely it would need to be a localized sickness, not something that affects entire regions in a single week...well maybe that would be possible but EXTREMELY rare (i.e. microbes traveling on a ship and infecting anyone on the trade route).

From an epidemiological standpoint, the diseases and sickness would be limited to certain planets, and certain districts. The odder the diseases, the rare the circumstance (i.e. the Chemolithoautotrop I mentioned earlier might be released on a mining ship boring into a very very old asteroid).

The Alobe virus is mentioned a few times in the Minmatar COSMOS. Mission texts describe it as "age-old" and responsible for the extinction of dozens of planetary societies over time. Shady relations to The Sanctuary are implied.

More like inb4Takhmal. Sleepers didn't have much in the way of biology. But nice find! Thanks!

I'm wondering if I should put together a medical catalog of this stuff with fanceh pics and graphs etc...

On the other hand, the Takmahl don't have masses of ruins in the constellation.

Research on a recent news article regarding a vial of viral hemmorhagic fever (VHF) being lost sparked my creativity (man I'm morbid). Hemmorhagic fever is pretty self explanatory by its name. It is caused by one of five viral RNA families that causes high and near fatal fever and enduces bleeding diathesis via hypocoagulability to the point the patient may bleed to death.

Short version: This virus gives you a fever well above normal fever ranged and makes you easily bleed. Like, your pores might bleed for no reason, or you might gush blood a small scratch from a BUTTER KNIFE. No this is not an exaggeration. It's a very nasty virus.

That being said and knowing the Blood Raiders for what they are...what if a virus was engineered from an RNA family that causes VHF to induce bleeding in its victim without the need of extra machinery or tools while at the same time insuring the bleeding is clean and pure for ritual use?

I'll being doing more research today and follow up with you all as I clean the idea up, but PLEASE GIVE SOME FEEDBACK. Especially Blood Raider RPers, I wanna know if this would even be something possible given the PF with them and whether even a clean bleed virus would still make the blood unclean.

Disclaimer: No Anslo is not going Blood Raider. >.>

I have been searching for PF references to this for years since first seeing it. It may be in the books, but I don't know what pages.

Cynosis - "Warp Sickness"

Cynosis seems to have several stages, both long term and short term, progressing with increased exposure to warp and jump fields.

From what I remember, Cynosis begins with simply feelings of dizziness and nausea during and immediately following a warp. As warps continue, the feelings progress to vomiting, and eventually people start passing out. Jumps through a stargate or cynosural field seem to be the same, only in a compressed and sudden form, with those not protected by medications experiencing violently ill effects within seconds of exposure.

There are medications to assist, but from what I recall they eventually cause something similar to cancer. I don't know.

There're references to it in TEA, but I've forgotten the exact page and it's been a while since I read TEA. It's the point where Jonas & Co. are first arriving at the station to enlist the doctor's assistance. (Now isn't that vague ...?) IIRC it's described as debilitating, impacting and impairing judgement and higher-level cognitive functions for a short-term period. Jonas has trouble concentrating and focusing on something as simple as sending a password, IIRC.

  • You're a Jovian spy, aren't you?

Hmm, thought I posted in this already.

Since my character was an infectious diseases specialist in his previous life, I'd be interested/willing to participate in anything you do with this.

I don't know what that means.

I think "IGN" meant "ingame name", which is Ze'ev Sinraali. :p

Lagging Behind

Morwen's Law:
1) The number of capsuleer women who are bisexual is greater than the number who are lesbian.
2) Most of the former group appear lesbian due to a lack of suitable male partners to go around.
3) The lack of suitable male partners can be summed up in most cases thusly: interested, worth the air they breathe, available; pick two.
