It is often said, "RL always trumps the game", but in situations like these there can be no doubt about the correctness of these words.
Maybe it helps you at least a little - no one here bears ill feelings because of your decision. Not before you've chosen to make this public, and certainly not now.

While I'm not a praying man, you are certainly in my thoughts.
I wish both of you the strength necessary to overcome this tragedy.
