Tribal News Network
« on: 21 Jun 2012, 20:02 »

The IGS has had two posts recently from the Tribal News Network:

[News Report YC 114-6-17] Tribal News Netwrok Premire (sic)

[News Report YC 114-6-22] Tribal News Network

I don't know if the player(s) behind TNN are here, but I love the concept behind what you're doing. IC journalism is good and More Of This Sort Of Thing! Still, I'd like to offer some constructive criticism.

First, spell check and grammar checks are your friends. Everybody makes typos, but severe typos in the title of your first post really detract from the image you want to portray.

Second, do your research. Between Karsoth's status and the issue of the "Apocrypha events" (something on which I think CCP has dropped the ball, given my understanding of the cause), you will do best with things that resemble what actually happens in game or in PF.

Keep going, and you can easily become one of the top-tier IC news sources in the game. I don't think anybody is really trying for the "serious" angle outside of the ISD right now, and they're not exactly doing a great job with it.

The one responsible for these articles has now taken more care to proof etc. If the player behind the hack keeps at it, with a little more journalistic integrity (ho ho) it should make for some good entertainment in the future. Good for him. Or her.

As for the latter thread, s/he brings to Onnen (the character) all the personality of a plank of wood or a whole Ikea coffee table. This is far from the case, as Onnen is an appreciably zany, but highly knowledgeable chap (of course).

I'm so going to clip TNN hack's ear next time s/he re-appears from the ether.

Edit edit edit. Edit.

This is actually my alt that I am doing this with. The Korsoth thing is actually a bigger story I mean to write over the course of things. Ive tried to write it in a eve friendly and lore friendly way, with little outs that dont pin it down. For example in the first post i wrote that the Amarr said when I contacted them "that the man has been dead for years". The Apocrypha event mentioned I ment to say that part about "DED says this was a false start event and not the full blown thing" but it got lost in my haste to post the thing. The Typos im getting better with "but damn it man im a doctor not a english major..."kidding.

Most of the things ill be writing in there will not fully jive with whats going on with the real game. For example the inspiration for the Halmah thing was me listening to talk radio I was thinking of the whole Tsunami a few years back and wanted to make that an eve like event. The Ani Tribunal article was based on a supreme court argument about LAX and a group called "Jews for Jesus" contesting the airports kicking them out and their first amendment rights.

Of course I dont keep it to close to those stories, i just think about "how can I make that story "Eve like".I dont try to stay to close to what players are doing in Eve, or Scope reports ect as I think that if eve were real there are many thing that dont get reported.

Good to hear :D I fully support this venture as its wonderful to have more peeps to -interact- with ;)

Also, don't ever take anything Math'ra says personally on the IGS - he really is an absolute arse when he wants to be, you just happened to have posted at the raegposting moment when I was on IGS :P

While I applaud the effort, my biggest issue is how you are trying to integrate various canon fiction into non-canon articles that show a limited understanding of said canon.

The Apocrypha event in particular irks me. Adding a disaster to an otherwise excellent story of Sisters of EVE calling a ceasefire in a system is brilliant; using a Seyllin-like event without understanding much about stars or mentioning the destruction of all orbital facilities (which would include a 24th Imperial Crusade station)...

Well, let's start simple. Halmah is a K7 orange star. This can be found with a simple search in-game, or looking it up on dotlan. This is important as the "Apocrypha" name for the event, as described in Templar One, was placed on the event in a "secret" CONCORD report, and it was specifically stated that Class-O stars were struck. They were main-sequence CME anomalies; meaning, huge flares. While these can actually happen in K7 orange stars, the Apocrypha event was special because multiple stars had massive CME events at the same time.

Yes, CCP kind of dropped the ball.  ;)

So, to recap:

A. One star wouldn't be an "Apocrypha" event.
B. Orbital facilities being destroyed would include a station in-game.
C. The star in question is nowhere similar to Seyllin.
D. The story would be excellent without a mention of "Apocrypha" events.
E. Other than the above issues, the article was excellent. Toning down the scope of the disaster would have made it really shine, without stretching suspension of disbelief.

Again, good initiative. I do have serious problems with the content of the articles. Don't try so hard to link your stories to canon events, because to put it bluntly, your writing could outshine anything CCP has produced just due to your own creativity.

Good luck, and be warned; I will totally blast future lapses in research on the IGS, in-character, no holds barred. Not a threat, but a challenge.  ;)

I always thought it would be more fun (and easier to write actually) if instead of the TNN it was in fact something like "The Rens Herald" or whatever.  By making it a bit more local you get to add regionial issues and spins on cluster or Republic wide events.  That actually makes it easier to write, allows for more creative freedom, and less likely to stumble on PF.

But, regardless, good luck and thank you for wanting to add to EVE RP :)

Gottii: y u no do it urself? :P

And to repeat what I said earlier: all of us (including my thread starter) want to see this continue but also to improve. Also don't take IC attacks personally, Lord knows, but you probably knew that already. :)

Finally: I'm not saying that your events actually need to occur in-game. I'm saying that they shouldn't present jarring obvious conflicts with what happens in-game, much less with PF, that's all.

Taking into account, what you have said here and what was said on the IGS threads, there will be a related story in the Monday edition that will allow me to save face but back away from the actual "Apocrypha" event that i mentioned, I would even be willing to pre-post stories here for vetting if i wasnt worried that this would ruin stories for you guys when I post them. That being said, if anyone would like to have an "advance copy " (albeit unedited and woefully mis-spelled) in an effort to help me grow these stories I would always love feed back.

Keep in mind that the Halmah Event, the Korsoth incident and some of the faces I will be introducing in the next post will be a recurring theme or mentioned at fro sometime as I do have an over all story arch that I am trying to tell. I see this less as a "news outlet" (though thats what I need it to look like to tell the larger story I want to) then a larger play or serial of stories all building up for a climax that may be worth the trip ...or I may fail woefully ;)

I do want people to shot holes through my stories, it actually helps inspire me to do better. For example in the next article there will be hotlinks to people, places and things that got to evelopidia and this was inspired by those who have, IC, posted negatively in the threads.

Thank you for your feed back, and I hope to entertain you guys in the months to come. Also, to Ssakaa, you started this mess with that RPing you did with me last week...so hang on tight pal.
