In addition does seem that as the tournament has become more and more serious business with huge multi trillion isk prizes for the winners the cost of entry (in terms of effort and practise time) has become far greater than a small alliance can successfully manage.

For that matter, the actual isk cost is a huge barrier as well.  We spent 51b total on setups, not to mention the entry fee and roughly 22b on the auction to get in.  So in total we dropped nearly 75b on the tournament this time around.  Some of that will come back to us as we liquidate unused hardwirings and ships that we had purchased in preparation of a run all the way to the final, but figure acutal expenditures will probably balance out around 65b.  That's not an insignificant amount of isk for a small alliance.

Yeah that is a lot really. I don't think SF ever really spent more than 10b isk tops for our runs total. It really has shown the difference between the little guys and the huge power houses. I think Rote is somewhere in the middle of potential tournament competitors but even you are massively outclassed in the isk spending ability of the nullsec alliances.

Do you get the impression it was a reasonable spend for the advertising and public image benefits you got this time around though?

Yes.  And more still for pilot morale.  It keeps our bittervet crew interested and it promotes a sense of teamwork and fellowship that you can't get running small gangs around Syndicate.  And to be fair, we could have gotten away with spending a lot less, but we got an unbelievable amount of isk donated to us by our members for the tournament fund, so we decided since we had it, we might as well spend it.  We splurged on full 6% hardwires for the PL match and 5% for all the rest, which was the bulk of our expenses.
