I just don't understand what that trailer had to do with EVE?

Capsuleers are already... immortal.
They can already transport their consciousness instantaneously.

It's rehashing of everything that CCP perceives as cool in the capsuleers to a foot soldier.

Which one is cooler, fighting with spaceships or running around shooting guns?

Only one of those kind of needs the setting of New Eden.

I kind of have to agree with Lallara.

The trailer was excellently made, I can't deny -- especially after the shambles (IMO, anyway) of the Awakening trailer that preceded it. I can't help but feel that the tropes used in it would have been better applied to capsuleers. Granted, they've Dust 514 to consider, but ah well. If nothing else, neat trailer was neat and could be a good sign for future ones.

That trailer was awesome.

But I had kindof the same feeling regarding their immortality. Though what annoyed me a little was more that capsuleers are just "standard" people that have a particular gene that allows them to use a piece of technology making them immortal when in capsule, but they rely on that tech to transfer their infomorph. Here, thats basically humans that can transfer freely almost without any kind of tech support, except maybe the first time they have to undergo the process that makes them immortal. Thats kindof feels for me like a deus ex machina, somehow.

Capsuleers are "immortal" outside a capsule, too. The difference of the capsule technology is that it allows an instantaneous transfer, without loss of memory, due to the fact that when the egg cracks, certain death ensues. It's a 1 or 0 decision, unless most of the circumstances in the 'regular' world. Soft cloning is a confirmed fact.

But yeah, it is a bit gimmicky since one could argue that there might be - for the use in soldiers - a certain set of circumstances that would trigger the euthanazing instant-brain scan for quick redeployment. Saves on hospital costs, too. Loss of limb? Back to the clone vat!

It's still a game, though, and the trailer was pretty cool.

Oh, and infomorphs (Capsuleers or Dusters, doesn't matter) is a very fitting term once you take it literally. It's commonly used as 'pulling something out of your ass', but god out of the machine describes 'us' pretty well. We're not demigods without the tech. Both the immortality and the incredible potency stems from it. Same reasons that it has been the title of a fairly successful series of video games. :)

It's impossible to perform an instantaneous upload at the moment of death for a person outside the capsule. The vast amount of technology required took the form of the Capsule, hence, Capsuleers.

With the Sleeper implants acquired from w-space, since they relied so much on sophisticated virtualities, the capsule has been miniaturized and shrunk into an implant. Now, this has been god-modded by roleplayers for the better part of the decade, but never before realized in prime-fiction in-game technology.

The idea is, the soldier can be flash-cloned and back in the fight with perfect memory of how he died, how the battle is going, etc. He does not fear pain, because he has tasted it over a hundred times already. He is utterly indomitable. That's the military application.

I would have to edit that.

He has been traumatized by death so many times that he is completely incapable of regular human interaction ever again.

Well, yes. That's why these soldiers don't go around to fancy captain's quarters to sip cocktails :P

There's a reason you don't see their faces. They're avatars of destruction, brainwashed into their causes and generally heartless. :P

Agreeing that while the trailer was awesome, the DUST tech thing could have been better explained in the context of the existence of capsuleers.

Things is, it wouldn't even have taken that much of a change. Just add a couple lines along the lines of

"They'd be... immortal."
"Just like the eggers."
"...damn. Now we're going to have homocidal, undieing maniacs running around our planets too?!"

Instantly the reason for their apprehension becomes far more understandable considering capsuleers.

That said, I have to sort of smile at a Jamyl who isn't defined as being inhabited by an Other thingy/prone to spontaneous bouts of throwing-people-across-rooms/etc and who actually cares that there are people are out there dieing in a war.

True, instantaneous is not possible. "Soft cloning" is. The instantaneous scan requires the neural interfacing which is not impossible in (Ground) vehicles or probably powersuits, but facing way too much practical issues. ( Here and here )

Ummmmmm. I think I mentioned that? What are you talking about?

I said that hardcloning at moment of death, outside the pod, was impossible, UNTIL they found sleeper fullerene-based implant technology, that integrates into their brain to allow for instantaneous transfer of consciousness.

Sorry, misunderstood you there due to mixing it up with the god-modding thing.
( And technically it's not impossible, but unfeasible. Okay, okay, I'll stop :D )
