Question about planets
« on: 10 Oct 2011, 10:07 »

I don't think that people who live on planets would say 'we live on planet 7' etc, so is it okay to name a planet for RP purposes?  Or should I just stick to 'planet 7' or whatever.

it's in the catalogue as Planet 7. but people can call it whatever suits, I'd think.

Like, Earth/Terra/Mundus/Sol III etc. etc.

something along the lines of "yes, that's the official name, we just call it Goofball" would do for an explanation, imo.

We'll call it... Bob.
What? You can't call a planet Bob!

Iffy on it, personally, if the planet isn't some random fuck-off world in the middle of nowhere.

The chances of people coming up with multiple different names for a given planet are a little too high. Not to mention people giving the same name to different planets. Better to just use the boring one and have everyone know exactly where the hell you're talking about.

Edit - Context is also important. Some planets you'd likely just refer to by the system name and no number and it would be safely assumed you're talking about that planet. For example, people referring to Tash-Murkon Prime are likely to be talking about the fifth planet, even though there are two temperate worlds in the system, given the presence of the T-M Family bureau stations in orbit there and nowhere else in system. Or P6 in Kador Prime, which is the only temperate planet.

Morwen's Law:
1) The number of capsuleer women who are bisexual is greater than the number who are lesbian.
2) Most of the former group appear lesbian due to a lack of suitable male partners to go around.
3) The lack of suitable male partners can be summed up in most cases thusly: interested, worth the air they breathe, available; pick two.

I think they'd be more inclined to say "Amamake III" or "Rens V". The "planet 5" thing is mostly fleet slang.

Though each planet does have its own name, it's just not explored. Some examples...

Villore III is called "Moroses"
A temperate planet in Chesiette is called Chesiette Prime
Jin-Mei homeworlds Lirsautton III and V are called Chakaux and Chandeille respectively (Gallente names for Jin-Mei worlds trolol)
A planet in Sinq Laison is called "Jenessa"

Ohgod, hadn't thought of that movie in ages.

Mormoen 7 -> Mormiset

Ellmay 4 -> Trespolegne

These were "fictional" names created for planets.....as you said, i don't think most people would say system-number as a homeplanet, they would probably use the name given to the planet itself.

The Amarr system is chock full of named planets, too.

Major systems already have planet names yeah, but I suspect the OP was about unnamed planets.

I dunno. I personally stay away from naming planets and systems because there is no ingame way to keep it all organized. It's such a shame too. Between the unnamed Empire planets, the unnamed nullsec systems, and an even better example.. w-space... there's so much room for player made lorebuilding.

I think I'd like to see a player made/run system that we can all agree on of working these things out. I want my own wormhole planet! :D

I name planets all the time.  Sometimes I even mention them.

It's fine, as long as you don't mind looking like a simpleton if and when CCP give that planet a name.

Thanks for the responses.

For now I'll just call it by the system name and planet number.

I do wish there was some kind of planet registry and if a planet did not have a name we could submit one.  I do think it'd make rp just a tad bit more immersive.  Ah well.

Yup. Some bureaucracy somewhere decided to apply a name without reference to the locals.

Are you referring to the player doing that or CCP?
