Re-calibrate your sarcasm meter. It's not picking up on the subtleties! ;)

Am I crazy thinking that people who don't have "Kyoko Sakoda" or "Kaleigh Doyle" type names are simply going by their callsigns?

That's my assumption. CONCORD requires a unique callsign for licence registration. That doesn't have to be your legal name, although for quite a few people there's a relationship between the two.

I would've used just "Matariki" if it hadn't been already taken. (It's a multi-lingual pun recognised while chatting about what we might do with second accounts if we started them, which in turn was to keep each other awake and alert while driving from Naples to Orvieto during torrential rain at night.) Having to add a byname isn't what I'd've preferred, but it's worked out okay and I doubt I'd change it now.

One of the ways of starting a character in the Glorantha worlds (RuneQuest and HeroQuest) is to write a short paragraph of 100 words. You're encouraged to make the paragraph densely-packed and to include some things that are ambiguous to act as hooks for discovery and invention later. "Rain" is like that for me. At the time I just needed a byname to start the character, but it sparked a strand of world-building about naming patterns and "festival children", and by being the one jarring note in Mata's otherwise intensely dutiful relationship with her clan at the time she got her licence it laid groundwork for later play.

I think I might have picked a name fewer people would ask about pronouncing!

To be completely honest, "Merahl" was a typo and was supposed to be Marhel, borrowing from an older pen & paper character of mine  But I can live with it. As far as using a callsign goes, I had a specific idea in mind when creating him, and he isn't the sort of person who would use a callsign in everyday communications.

Some of my people in SYNE take this approach. I don't think Ninavask will object to my singling him out and saying that he RP's the full name of "Ninavask Revan." HavvieG takes a similar approach. I've always RP'd "Baxter" as being the last name, by comparison.

I'm in the group of difficult to pronounce names!  But as for picking differently, I'm in two minds about that.

For roleplaying purposes I wish I'd had a more standard name, so instead the name has become the callsign and is usually shortened to Wamp when talking to people.  Wamp does have a real name but he's not ready to reveal that yet, only those closest to him know what it is... but who knows what the future holds?  ;)

On the other hand Lord Wamphyri is a name I've used in pretty much every other game I've played, so in that sense I'm glad I still have it in EVE, even if it doesn't really fit in the universe.

Now when WoD comes out, that's a whole different story, lol

Yoshito Sanders is the name of a character I've been playing in various RP stuff for over a decade. Though in those he's a pro-wrestler turned businessman with an inflated ego and douchey disrespect for everyone else in the universe. So it doesn't really fit with the character I play in EVE.

I sometimes do wish I'd come up with a more Amarrian (or Ni-Kunni, even) sounding name. I've always considered that I should be Yosh Sandar and retain the essential core of the name while making it seem like an actual EVE name instead of something I essentially made up a decade ago to complete a joke.

If only he'd been a Mind Clash player first, it could have...

I was brought up by a Tolkien nut of a father who passed it on to me in a slightly diluted form, so I lifted Morwen's first name from Tolkien's books when I was looking for a name for a background character for some roleplay in another game I played (specifically, the equivalent of a college roommate for my primary character at the time). Her last name came later, and really didn't come from the anime of the same name - I didn't even know about the show until some time after when a friend pointed it out.

Far as callsigns go, in Morwen's case the callsign came from her name - the dreaded "Morlag," patron saint of network latency - and actually was first given to me by someone who doesn't really roleplay all that much in EVE, but I've had the pleasure of RPing with in the game Morwen was a 'background' RP character for. I'm not actually sure how it went from there to the RP community - I might have just made a joking reference to it at some point and it stuck - it definitely started OOC, though. ;)

Back to the original question, though - would I change her name? Nah. Probably not. It's a simple and easy-to-remember name, and even better, there's an amusing pseudo-etymology for her last name that works well for her given her hobbies and interests. (For those who haven't been told already, try taking "Lagann" apart as if it were in a Romantic language, then let google do the rest. It'll be pretty obvious when you find it - there's a reference to something in the real world that is also in EVE.)

Lagging Behind

Morwen's Law:
1) The number of capsuleer women who are bisexual is greater than the number who are lesbian.
2) Most of the former group appear lesbian due to a lack of suitable male partners to go around.
3) The lack of suitable male partners can be summed up in most cases thusly: interested, worth the air they breathe, available; pick two.

Hmm. I like the name, but I'd perhaps have picked something ever so slightly different if I had known that there was a ship called a Raven.

I would have. But I've been told the name works for an Achur. I think EVE is the last game in which I roleplay where I did not think up a suitable unique name for a character, but rather drew on my existing name collection. My alt, Faber Demaunier, got a suitable name, same goes for the blueprint copier alt and the cyno alt. Valnurana is also from my generic list of character names, I'd rename her too if I started over.

At this point in time however I'd rename Valnurana, but I'd keep Myrhial as she is. I think the name has earned a sufficient level of renown where it would be bad to change it. Then again, those who really care / are interested in me would pick up on the change. But names do become kind of a trademark after a while.

Someone mentioned Tolkien nuts? Well, I have minor difficulties with explaining the callsign Mithfindel (which is Sindarin). My other characters (two active at the moment) do, however, have somewhat more appropriate names.

Affirmative.

EDIT: That said, I did come up with a way to justify my name from an Amarrad standpoint~

Quite happy.

Although I wish there were a way to ensure my version of pronunciation, like a spaniard or roman, and not english.  It's Vih-Tahl-Eee-Ah ( say it like your Spanish!) and not Vay-tahl-yah

Although I did come up with that before I was super in depth with Amarr backstory, I might bave gone more arabic and less Spaniard. Racially Silas is a bit dark skinned and looks more like a moore/spaniard mix anyway...

I think most of you all's names are just great and would be hard to imagine being anything else.

Huh, I've always pronounced your name correctly then. Go me!

For those curious, it's Val-uh-day-us.
