[Mission] A Desperate Rescue

Quote
A Desperate Rescue
Earlier today, a small, unknown group of frigates attacked one of our remote signals intelligence (SIGINT) communications outposts, causing catastrophic damage and killing dozens of our personnel.  This station belongs - or should I say belonged - to a small Caldari corporation with a poorly hidden contractual link to our military intelligence services.  Fortunately, the survivors managed to escape via their high-speed emergency shuttle and are expected to arrive at a nearby station within the hour.

As you might expect, we are working hard to determine the identities of the aggressors, but as yet we have no solid leads.  Of course, this is not your concern.  What is your concern, should you choose to help us, is a report we just received indicating that the surviving team of SIGINT contractors have been targeted for immediate assassination by the same mysterious organization behind the outpost attack.  Apparently, someone doe not want these individuals to provide us with whatever information they must have obtained during the course of their recent duties.

Within the last few hours, we intercepted a poorly encrypted communication indicating that a covert hit squad is en route to the station aboard an unspecified vessel - or may actually be at the station already!  This station's security force, while well armed and highly trained, is insufficient to detect and defeat the kind of lethal operatives that we believe intend to kill our contractors.  Therefore, we need you to rescue this team immediately and bring them back to us for an emergency debriefing and to ensure their safety.

After running a check of qualified pilots in our office database, your name was near the top of the list.  We estimate there will only be sufficient time for this one rescue attempt before the assassins strike.

Caldari SIGINT Outpost Network
The Caldari Navy, much like the military services of other races, operates a covert network of signals intelligence outposts along the borders of the Caldari State. The specific, primary mission of these stations is to provide advance early warning of any hostile incursion by the Gallente military. Beyond this vital mission, however, the outposts are also tasked with gathering intelligence on a wide variety of other targets, both military and civilian. Of particular interest is the regular provision of information on the movement of the commercial and industrial fleets of other races, given the competition between the Caldari corporate system and foreign companies. In this way, the outposts not only provide an essential early warning system for any hostile forces, but also provide data of immense economic value, thus better enabling the Caldari private business sector to better compete in the merciless realm of interstellar business.

Item: Civilian SIGINT Contractors
These contractors, many of whom are former Caldari Navy intelligence operatives, are very well trained, experienced, and possess high level security clearances, making them extremely valuable investments for their employer. Their skill sets are varied, but include translation (primarily Gallente), covert signals interception, military and economic intelligence analysis, and supercomputer systems administration.

Another interesting Caldari storyline mission

This is the sort of flavor I want to see more heavily in EVE.

We're crawling out the Caldari's ears!

This, however, I think refers more to intercorporate rivalries within the State/Guristas stuff than it does Gal-Cal animosity.

Now if only EVE actually incorporated SIGINT beyond just the metagame.

There's certainly a lot of HUMINT ;)

Out of curiosity, can you think of any ways that SIGINT/other disciplines could be incorporated as a gameplay element?  Some kind of hacking minigame maybe?  Like probing?

Yes, but I won't drive us too far off topic in this particular thread. Will post something later tonight, don't have anything else to do anyway. :)

Seri uses the in-game term CapInt or CAPINT to refer to "capsuleer intelligence", in particular, FDU intel chans.

So, while the Gallente meddle in person (or send their Minmatar lackeys), the Caldari use high-tech to spy the Gallente and Minmatar (and each other) from an arms length?

I can't imagine that all the empires wouldn't use both forms of intelligence gathering (and others), though perhaps to differing degrees with differing levels of success.

Levels of success and level of focus - and naturally, what capsuleers see is not the whole picture. (I think it was pointed out earlier that a lot of Caldari missions seem to be about Gallente coming to Caldari/Amarr space to sabotage/spy/spread propaganda.)
