Did you know -> News
« on: 08 May 2012, 08:05 »

I was loking at the top of the forum and it just looked a little awkward, having "Did you know:" changed to "News:" but the various statements remaining the same. More awkward when refering to history rather than news, as in the following example:

"News:That Titan Doomsday Devices were originally massive, field clearing nukes instead of doomsday rays?"

Don't know when the change happened, it's just messing with me now that I see it, and I'm curious as to the reason for it. Could be cool if it were changed to actually have current events.

It's an issue that resulted from upgrading - our old forum theme that let us change the tagline text to "Did you know:" isn't compatible with the current version.

That's a thing for Misan to look into if he ever comes back. :P

3) The lack of suitable male partners can be summed up in most cases thusly: interested, worth the air they breathe, available; pick two.

When I went looking for it last time it was hidden somewhere in the php if anywhere. The couple of small modifications I tried to make didn't do shit to make it work then. If I'm feeling particularly motivated (and have some free time) I'll either look for a way to hack it again or find a mod that fixes the problem for me.

I looked into this when I was setting up our forums for the first time (we are also SMF), from what I gleaned it was essentially an issue with forum theme.

The default theme's "News" broadcast field was very easy to manipulate in the basic configuration. However, other themes either did away with the feature or vastly restricted its versatility for some reason. Our current theme cannot use it at all unfortunately, and I have found no way to change that without modding or base line editing.

A bit of effort will perhaps be required, Misan.

Turns out some decent google-fu came up with a elegant solution that didn't require any php hacking. You should see it as "Did you know?" again now. The setting should work for anyone using the default English language setting, and possibly British English (didn't test yet). It should work across all themes.

Seems to be working properly here. Using the SMF default theme.

Works like a dream on the latest Chrome and Firefox. Suggestion: Remove the ? and : if you can. A lot of the tidbits are formatted to be prefaced like that.

The question mark is gone, the colon is hard coded (or located elsewhere) so it isn't easily removable. It probably makes more sense to keep it as a spacing/transition indicator.

It's fine. It was the question mark that kind of borkd it. Thanks Misan. Great job.
