It's like a bank trusting anyone who says "oh I have access to all the money in Account A which I am telling you has N dollars" and the bank saying "awesome here's your money d00d".
Ricky Gervais did that in The Invention of Lying:lol:

Confirming that it's encrypted is nice, but not quite the panacea the article claims -- because we don't know much about the security of the encryption keys.

well at least it gives me hope that the PS3 isnt going to die after this. This could have been way worse for Sony, and I love my PS3.

Apparently, it is way worse for Sony:

Couldn't have happened to a more deserving company, imo.

And already there are suspicions that the data breach is connected to some folks reverse-engineering the PS3 and making a patch allowing to convert retail consoles into debug/development consoles - which apparently allows them to spoof all kinds of things about who you are to the PSN as a side effect.

http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=302 captures their attitude pretty well tbh.

For those that are just breezing through and haven't followed the above slashdot link, the SOE breach could potentially affect you if you've ever had an active account on any of their MMOs, including Everquest, Everquest 2 or Planetside.

Time to start changing passwords. . .

Passwords are one thing (and hopefully not a major issue for a number of reasons).

If you're still using a payment card that Sony ever knew about, go ahead and cancel it. Save yourself the time.
