I guess I'm not seeing (or grasping) the <awesome> in this. We know ships have crews. Is it really important to know how many on average die? :S

It's more exact specifics per ship class, I think, and also...racial modifiers it appears?

Gallentean ships crewed less due to "automated systems" and "drones"?

I think it's just a tool, nothing more.

People that prefer to kill less will gravitate towards ships with less crew.
People with demigod syndrome towards ships with more crew.

Everyone will be boggled by the amount of people that has been killed in New Eden by the capsuleers since the program was opened for non-Navy pilots.

Hell, we might even find out that the whole sector is devoid of people.

^^^This. I would love to see players having to train and hire crews for their vessels. Would add the risk to pvp all that more exciting.

I'm not sure that is really wise, people are terrified of losing their assets and their KB-effectiveness allready, adding more possible losses is likely to have a negative effect before a positive one.

Having said that, I'd also love for crews to have meaning. If this was re-gained based on ship-life and service, my one-and-only HIC would instantly gain veteran status. Killed plenty with that one ship, never lost it ^^

Heavy-duty necro here.

http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1483832&page=1#19

Quote from: CCP Delegate Zero
Those who attended TonyG's Novel/IP talk at FanFest (Words, Words, Words) will recall he showed a slide about crew, detailing NPC ship crewing and capsuleer ship crewing per class, racial modifiers on numbers, total capacity (crew + passengers) and survival rates when considering a combat between two vessels of the same class. (Because as Tony said, if a battleship takes a hit from a Titan doomsday beam no-one is getting out alive. Survival is situational but at least an average can be considered.)

Tony also stated the information would be published fairly soon for all to access. The FanFest talk was its first public domain unveiling, so to speak. The info has been used behind the scenes to inform canon material for quite some time.

Look out for it when it comes. Can't give a firm date but we've not forgotten the craving you guys have for info on crew.

Omnononomonomonomonomonm

At this year's Fanfest CCP Delegate Zero said he'd been asked if those crew could be replaced by robots, and his response had been that they could be.

Yay! Random claim of Shin #4 ("My ships are crewed by robots") has CCP support! :D

Well, now. Aria's initial dream of a capsuleer exodus from New Eden takes a step closer to reality.

As does the prospect of capsuleerdom wholly divorced from baseliner support. Is this is a good thing?

Saede would be all over that.

Ikky. I hope they don't stick with that line about robots. I find that a great deal of the dark majesty of EVE's world is the sheer number of people getting killed on warships every day.

Decreasing the amount of people as tech increases I am ok with, but actually replacing them entirely is a step too far for me to be happy with it.

But then, I have always wanted crew to be a consumable item that you have to fill your ships with for them to work correctly and that certain weapons can hurt.

Part of the problem for me has always been that the sheer number of crew they declare has never jibed with their claim that the crew on an Empyrean's ship only handles extremely low-end crap like cleaning. It is rare if I have a ship out of dock for more than a few hours, so I honestly have never seen the reason why I'd actually carry a crew with me instead of automating what needs automating and simply relying on station crews to vacuum the halls.

Plus, Shin's desire for robot crews has more to do with trust issues, so they're grimdark-inspired robots... :D

Their crew numbers aren't actually that high, though, for warships. About the same or a little lower than Honorverse ships. Now certain PF makers ideas about what it is crew are used for is a different issue. You only have crew numbers that high if redundancy is a primary concern. Redundancy is not a concern for cleaning, so the crew numbers are either wrong or they are doing more than cleaning.

5000 people on a battleship suggests that needing to have 5 people who know how to fix a single part on the number 4 laser when it breaks is a rather high priority, just in case four of them already are dead.  You need people rather than programs to do that sort of job because they have to think on their feet. Automation and drones cut down on the number of people you need, but you still need a lot of brains. I think the rogue drones are the only EVE examples of that level of automation.

in the future, there will be robots.

Anyone wanting a robot crew should bung a few robotics doodads in their cargohold imo.

for more immersionism and stuffs.

I'll believe the robot thing when they remove all the windows from the ships.

Space windows +10 armor bonus btw.
