Brutors in Non-White Shocker!
« on: 20 Jan 2011, 07:38 »

So the learned members of the Backstage forums, am I alone in having difficulty in deciding whether the people complaining that their Brutor characters are now black are either trolls or really dense?

Or was it really not obvious before that Brutors are black?

Some examples:

Well, people seem to miss the skin color stuff a lot. I'd think as a Matari player that it is frigging obvious that Brutor are black and Sebiestor are white, but I've also ran into a lot of people bitching about how EVE is racist because it depicts slaves as black and slavers as white.

the obviousness in this new character sculptor thing is bigger.

Previously, they looked darkerskinned, but not especially so.

Now they have distinct bone structure and skin colours that are much more pronounced, and the amount of possible variation from the base isn't enough to be ambiguous.

Other bloodlines also don't have the same skin colour choice as they used to - you could make very pale Amarr ladies but also very suntanned looking ones. Now it's well towards the pale end.

Yeh, which is really stupid considering not all Minmatar are black and not all slaves are Minmatar.  :bash:

This is where I mention (once again) that the Art of EVE book specifically addresses this. Brutor were modeled after the Maori tribes of New Zealand, and it wasn't until later that CCP realized that they'd made the only black blood line part of the race that struggles against slavery. They admit to a sort of "racism through ignorance" rather than intentional, in fact.

And yeah, those posts look like trolls to me. /agree Milo

On the one hand, they might be trollin'.

If not, maybe certain groups were born with certain traits that make them stand out, and not all humans are identical, and we need to accurately reflect that melanin content isn't a big deal except to turn human different colors, and we should all get over it. vOv

In a similar vein, I'm seeing quite a few people going "What the hell? Vherokior are supposed to be Asian-looking? WHAT?" In their defence, I think it was more visible on the male than female Vherokiors before, but still... *shrugs.*

In general, I'd say that (as with most trolling) there's probably a few actually upset people to start with and a few trolls who hopped on the bandwagon once it was rolling.

I like the implications of Gallentians being punched in the face by walking up to a Minmatar as they so freely use another person's culture as a fad.

Seen some race card threads, there was that "CCP Favors Faggots" thread, and then there was the "Where is the third gender?" thread.

I really wish people would keep this shit out of my video game, nobody fucking cares, it doesn't matter, and that goes for both the detractors and the proponents.

Nonsense.

They still look asian to me, but they've certainly lost that certain Vherkeriorness that they used to have.  Especially the females, who all tended to look like Lucy Liu with dreadlocks.

The Brutors, for the most part, don't look too different to me.  Amusingly, I see more light skinned Brutors now than I used to see.

And the Amarr tend to look really hot now.  I'm not sure what that means, but it just disturbs the general order of things.

Dunno about "hot", but Amarrian males look badass now in a way they did not before.

My image of the Vherokior was more persian than chinese pre-patch, but now that's quite hard to achieve.
