It is situations like this that make me feel it is important to maintain some level of OOC contact with other players, even those who are antagonists. If you can get on OOC then someone is much less likely to decide that everyone is picking on them for OOC reasons. Also, if all you see of a person is the fiction that they choose to portray online then this will tend to colour your perception of them.
I'm thinking back to the, pre FW, days when EM had a perma-dec running with PIE and, post battle, we'd sometimes chat. In some cases opponents would suggest ways their enemy could improve, because we wanted opposition that was a challenge to fight.
