[Character] Felix Rasker

((This is my first attempt at a biography, and it’s definitely a work in progress, but I felt it’d be a show of good faith to have it on the boards. Most of this information is ICly confidential, but it’s no fun keeping your story to yourself, even if other characters will never hear it, so take a gander! And if you have advice, feel free to share it.))

NAME: Felix Rasker (birth name unknown)
AGE: 29
HEIGHT: 5’11”
WEIGHT: 54kg (120 lbs)
DOB: 2.9.YC85
BIRTHPLACE: Ontorn III, Al’hushan, Colony 86
ETHNICITY: Sebiestor, Vadduk sub-clan, considers himself tribeless
POLITICAL ALIGNMENT: None
DED STATUS: Unknown

The man now called Felix Rasker was born into an impoverished society: his home planet only achieved extensive development after becoming a popular spaceport for miners following the discovery of rich mineral veins beneath its crust. Material Acquisitions acquired the rights, and while it was a lucrative investment for the miners and industrialists, it forced a schism between the clans inhabiting the development site of mining colonies.

On the one side, the Vadduk tribe considered the industry an affront to their tribal ways, and disapproved of the severe damage done to the environment in exchange for being “put on the map” economically. The other major clan, the Joro clan, believed the mining industry to be an opportunity for the planet to prosper and escape the cycle of unemployment and deteriorating agriculture that had plagued the clans for so long. Eventually, the Vadduk resorted to violence and eco-terrorism to make their point.

The Joro won the short civil war that ensued, due almost entirely to their new backing from the mining colonies and their Federation security force. Those Vadduk who would surrender and work for the colonies were given menial jobs with minimal wages, but they escaped the fate of those who refused and ended up stranded in shanty towns, outside the walls of the “company towns.”

Felix was born a decade after the conflict had subsided, and unfortunately he wound up outside the colony walls. Trapped in poverty and incapable of acquiring a decent job, Felix did what almost every young Vadduk man did: he joined a gang. Years of petty crime and street brawling landed him in prison, and he was given two choices: 4 years in prison, or a rehabilitation program in Federation space. Pragmatically, he chose the latter.

After completing rehabilitation and a basic education course, he secured a technical work study program courtesy of an outreach program for immigrants and at-risk youths. He performed admirably and was awarded a scholarship to a local college, but he was not free from his old ways. Resentful and frustrated, Felix fell into bad company, joined a band of radical anarchists and was introduced to the brief, but ultimately painful relief of narcotics. These new associates convinced him that his problems stemmed from the Federation’s policies of “soft slavery,” a method of ensuring Matari dependence on the Gallenteans. Slowly, Felix’s mind was poisoned by drug usage, and he developed insomnia, paranoia, and the early signs of psychosis.

Fuelled by his addiction and his aimless hatred, Felix was talked into his worst criminal act yet: a bomb plot targeted at a Bank of Luminaire branch. Through various schemes, he secured the necessary funds and falsified documents to ensure his escape afterwards. The attack was failure, dealing almost no damage to the bank building and barely affecting commerce, but one security guard was killed in the explosion, which led to the arrest of every member of the radicals except for Felix, who fled to Republic space.

Felix drifted through the Republic for a time, now with no friends, family, tribe, or goals to speak of. He slowly cut back his drug habits and eventually enrolled at the Republic University, hoping to become a political novelist, but he ended up excelling in multiple areas of study, ironically because his insomnia allowed him to stay awake for most of a week with nothing to do. Ultimately, Felix’s life took an extreme turn when he was selected for capsuleer training, having accrued a nearly perfect educational record. At the time, the Republic was eager to put as many capsuleers into space as possible to compete with the Empire, and against the odds, Felix was able to handle the strain of the implant procedure in spite of - or perhaps because of - his unusual brain chemistry.

As of yet, Felix has not found a cause he considers important enough to support with his newfound abilities. For now, he spends his days doing any job he can find, no matter how seedy, in order to pay for his mounting medical expenses, continuing substance abuse, and his growing ship hangar.

TRIVIA:

- Felix retains the mind he developed as a ferociously skeptical and politically radical young man. He has a conspiracy theory about nearly everything, and while some have evidence to support them, others are simply the result of momentary lapses in reasoning. He deleted his first galnet account after deciding that repeated messages concerning Republic University alumni reunions were, in fact, round-up operations perpetrated by Amarrian inquisitors.

- He is prone to sudden outbursts, although he is fortunate to have access to advanced cybernetics now as they prevent further damage from self-medication. However, as his original brain scan was corrupted, he cannot return to a normal mental state.

- He is intensely averse to non-sterile environments. He refuses natural food, claiming that anything grown in the ground is “contaminated,” and uses a filtration mask at all times while outside of his pod or station habitat (a rare occurrence). It includes a straw so that he can drink without difficulty. Typically, he eats his own sealed nutrient packs rather than restaurant meals.

- He refuses to watch galnet or televised shows, claiming that they are designed to de-educate the population of the Federation and Republic in order to facilitate easier government control. He calls this the “brainwash protocol.” However, he is an avid holofilm buff and has a growing collection of classic (read: terrible) films.

- Despite his erratic personality, Felix is nonetheless a master of the simpler forms of surveillance, counter-intelligence and encryption. His original identity and his history before capsuleer life is known only to himself. He has eliminated any trace of his prior existence, and maintains an enigmatic lifestyle to this day.
