Over excessive. It's PR imho. People agree because of PR and emotion. Does not need a lot to scare the hell out of people for not very rational reasons.

If they kept it like that for too long however, people might start to change their minds.

These days people are not very annoyed by too much policemen or troopers patrolling here and there. It makes them feel safe. But when it comes to intimacy (intrusive systems like cameras, etc), they are pissed to no limits.

In contrast, in February, southern California did not shut-down during the search for Dorner.

And the LAPD went around shooting at Grandma's in trucks.

Frankly, I am okay with the cops going "Hey, shit might get dangerous, please keep yourselves safe"

Murders happen all the time, "shit might get dangerous" every day.

Trigger happy cops not getting an actual visual on a suspected threat before shooting is bad training, bad ROEs, bad police work, and an overarmed, militarily equipped police force.   Such circumstances should not be cause for us to hide whenever there is a manhunt going on, but to better train our police forces to exercise caution and restraint.

Some of the images Morwen Lagann shared bare a scary resemblance to soldiers on patrol in Iraq or Afghanistan.  (Some of the images out of the Dorner manhunt are as well)

People didn't mind the heavy police presence because they had just been attacked by these two individuals, and there were running gunfights in the streets.

I understand the urge to point and say "police state!" when SWAT teams start unloading tactical teams into surburban neighborhoods en masse, but we have these police forces for a reason, to protect the citizenry that funds them.  Now that the apparent threat is removed, and the situation seems to be under control, as long as the police presence departs from all areas not involved in the crime scenes, there should be no problem.

If they were to linger for days, and weeks afterwards without apparent reason, that's when you may see some people start to make a (valid) fuss over their presence.
