Imo it should be much easier to start out as a minmatar from the gallente diaspora. It doesn't lock you into "amarr = the devil" hate mode, it's an easy explanation for your ooc'ly western pov (?).
Edit: You could, alternatively, be one of those "lucky" slaves who were "liberated" (aka. abducted) from their amarrian overlords. In an attempt to fit into your "new found freedom" you went to capsuleer school and simply did not find the tribal society much to your liking.
