Not all of them have thought of themselves as "RPing" during those, no doubt, but who the hell cares.

Exactly. :>

Before I started RPing in Eve, I might have done a bit of piracy in Kor Azor. Except the CEO said it wasn't piracy because we didn't ask for ransoms. I don't think anyone really believed that.

Definitions of "piracy" are so ridiculously stupidly overstretched that anything could constitute piracy as far as I can tell.

Shooting people is piracy depending on who you ask.  YMMV.

But they definitely Role Play. For one thing, the RP flavor of 'being a pirate' is the Number 1 Reason that people are pirates. Nobody does it for the money - pirates who don't use their alts as high-sec isk-raisers are often among the poorest pilots in the cluster.

I find myself agreeing with most of what is being said... but I disagree with pracy not being profitable. I'm in the "average" in terms of liquid ISK (usually between 300m and 1.2b) and a rather nice fleet of ships at my disposal. Nearly all of my ISK has come from piracy. I have a small bit that has come from smalltime brokering, and transportation, but thatg is a very small percentage. I have a carrier due to piracy alone.

On the topic of pirate RP... I used to be in BL3H when they weren't fail cascading. They made fun of lolRP a lot, even knowing that a couple people in the corp did RP (it was in good jest most of the time). They didn't say as much when they saw an RP ransom net 850mil for a T2 fit Golem from a pilot that wouldn't pay a 300m ransom on a faction fiit CNR a couple weeks previous. And our (then) allies, Neo-Spartans, were in a similar situation with some of their pilots being RPers while the majority of them didn't realize they were RPing.

Basically, once people saw that RP wasn't 'robe and wizard hat' stuff, most either became RP-lite or just shrugged rather than mocking it as they did before.

P.S. RP ransoms == best ransoms.

Deep down, a lot of EVE players like RP.  Theyre all gaming dorks like we are.  They've prolly got d20s somewhere in their home, or have owned one at some time.  Its just a lot of people dont like the stigma, or lack the self confidence to admit they enjoy it, even if they love Mass Effect and they have a DMG on their bookshelf.

A co-worker of mine had a theory that most people would rather admit to watching gay porn than being roleplayers.

So when he was running roleplaying games at his place he'd wander around work, wink at people and say "Gay porn at my place tonight guys" and people would nod back and say "see you there"...

Sometimes, they'd explain to the people who overheard, and sometimes they wouldn't...

Frankly, in many games and in some (thankfully small) corners of EVE too, what passes for RP in MMOGs is such that I would be hesitant to identify myself with it. I can elaborate if someone's really interested, but I am referring to "RP = speaking in a funny way and ignoring what goes on in the game for real" thing.

Its fairly easy to get pirates to RP. Just find the right kind of insult, completely IC but without too much of wizard's robe added, and you'll have them going along in no time. They'll occasionally fall out of character, but the need to defend their ego's in front of their mates will have them directly respond to you IC challenge.

I usually phrase my insult as a question, which helps too.

"Mr. X, did you leave behind this pitiful wreck of that Matari rustbucket called a Rifter? It seem you left behind some fusion ammo, do you want it returned?"

"Incidentally, why did you call it 'pwnmobile'? Is this because you have a tendency to be 'pwnd' alot or do you have a thing for named target painters?"

There are few pirates who can resist such simple questions. When they respond, I simply continue phrase other questions or remarks based on their responses. Just feed their ego a bit at times and alternate with a couple of colorful insults, and you'll have an instant mini-RP conversation over local comms.

"Really, you are the Lord of this system? I wasn't notified. Is leaving behind a Rifter wreck like some kind of urine marker, like an animal that leaves droppings to demarcate the edges of his territory? And if you are the Lord, what kind of rules do you have here that I should be aware of?"

etc.etc.

If you RP at people, and they say things back that can be interpreted IC, it is good RP for you and fun for everyone and I fully support it and it's what I do and enjoy and I believe I entertain the pirates with it too - but I'd still claim that the guys are not RPing as such, if they do not intend to portray a sustained character different from the player, etc.

But like I said, we are down to defining RP, now.

Italics mine for emphasis.

While this is true, I've seen such instances interest people enough to become "RP-lite" (casual, part-time, situational).  And RP-lite is a good way to introduce people to full RP without the lolRP reaction, and once they realize it's not the creepy nonsense they thought it was (well, for the most part), many will get involved in more than RP-lite but far from immersion RP.

Yep, Inara. I am by no means objecting to recruiting more RPers this way, or even just enjoying that sort of RP-lite-lite play. Like I said, I do so myself too and I don't think I am torturing the other guys with it, it seems they enjoy it too.

"This is not really RP" does not mean "this is an inferior way to enjoy yourself".
