Title: Sum up your character in a tvtropes link.
Post by: Aradina on 07 Jun 2017, 03:17
This is the latest in my quest to destroy productiveness, what trope describes your character best?

This is mine.

I edited this to a less lazy answer.

Meet Elmund Egivand, an engineer (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheEngineer), coffee (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MustHaveCaffeine) and starship  (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WhatAPieceOfJunk)aficionado who may be  revering machines  (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MachineWorship?from=Main.AveMachina)a bit too much.

His homeworld is  Skarkon II (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ScavengerWorld). He prefers to live in the frontiers (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpaceWestern). Much of his activity in space consists of smashing and grabbing and privateering (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpacePirates). He is trying to develop self-maintaining starships (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SelfHealingPhlebotinum).

Due to his first-hand experience with the Republic's mess up with Skarkon II, he is something of a critic of Republic policies (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BiasSteamroller), though his impressions on them has soften (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ConstructiveCriticism) a bit these days when it is clear that things are starting to improve, though not nearly as evenly as he would have liked.

Will  overreact (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ComicalOverreacting) if fed snails, theories with no basis in actual fact and clearly didn't pass the scientific method and bullshit schematics. Highly  critical (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CausticCritic) of Federation cuisines.

A firm believer of  overwhelming  (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MoreDakka) firepower (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MacrossMissileMassacre) on reasonably tough and fast (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LightningBruiser) ships and attacking on  multiple fronts (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AttackDrone).

Also  doting husband (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HappilyMarried).

Mmk. I came back to this to narrow the tropes down and I just ended up adding even more and elaborating with text walls. So I'm going to give a TL;DR and a Spoiler tag so y'all don't have to read this ridiculous wall of text I've made unless you really hate yourselves or are really curious about my character for whatever reason. Here goes.

TL;DR: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ByronicHero
Oh, I really like this. In fact I'm gonna go a little overboard here, because rarely is a character accurately summed up by just one of these traits..

Jason is a confusing character when you get to know him.. I try to keep him continually evolving. At the moment, he's Neutral Good (imo the most essentially good alignment), though he's in the past been Lawful Good and True Neutral (imo the most consequentially evil alignment). If I were to sum up Jason's character/viewpoints with one quote,

"If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart? "

- Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago

Anyway, to the sum and conflict of tropes that is Jason Galente..

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NoMereWindmill This is an interesting one for Jason. He's definitely the type to end up in this sort of situation, except capsuleers are so overwhelmingly powerful that the current lore doesn't really convey a sense of existential threat to humanity, with a few exceptions that still aren't quite well enough developed yet. If the Drifters/Sleepers/Rogue Drones become more of an immediate threat, you may see some of this trope from Jason

Flaws (Themes: Emotionally unstable if certain buttons are pushed, constant need to find meaning in meaningless things, practicalist stereotyping at odds with strong sense of individualism, aggressive and warlike by nature despite intellectual and ethical pacifism, angsty, has bouts of profound misery due to internal conflict and has to think his way through these personal episodes, massive amount of internal conflict about his role in the universe compared with his ideals, hates himself, obscures reality with ideals even in romance, uncompromising with others, can't control his snark to his own detriment, relies on intellectual abstractions of ethical principles and his job as a soldier for the grounding and sense of belonging others might get from family and friends)

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/YouAreWhatYouHate
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IJustWantToBeNormal (would regret becoming a capsuleer, but it was the only way he escaped poverty)
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LovingAShadow

("Loving a Shadow" is a big one for Jason, and combines three parts. First, Jason had written off committed relationships and marriage due to a strong distaste for the behavior, priorities and intellectual pursuits of what he perceived to be most women. So, the fact that he found someone that he truly saw eye to eye with enough to actually love them and dive into a relationship, is itself a bit of a miracle and a total change in his personality resulted from it. This led to the second issue, his butchered former fiancee's shadow (see below) over his attempts at recommitting himself romantically, leading to a bit of personal distance and awkwardness. The lack of comfortable, consistent small talk and 'slice of life' with his lover leads him to fill in the gaps of knowledge about her with logical projections of ideals based on what he knows about her that made him fall in love with her. In truth, he knows very little about her background, her family, her goals, and what makes her 'tick'. This is also partly a result of three, which is the natural issues with capsuleer relationships, particularly where one party lives in Anoikis and the other lives in New Eden and they're combat capsuleers for different, unaffiliated corporations. One, capsuleers cannot easily have children, settle down, and raise a normal family which is a high life priority for a traditionalist Mannar like Jason. The distance of the relationship and infrequency of meeting with his beloved cause him to idealize her rather than understand her, and this uncertainty over building a true family with his beloved causes a degree of angst and, ironically, may in the future lead to either a potential lack of consistent commitment or an extreme lifestyle change in order to reconcile this distance/lifestyle problem and commit. [Which would pose OOC game problems for me since I ain't leavin' wormholes!])

Continually struggles with his past and still considers himself to have a lot of rough edges that need smoothing out, though never at the cost of his personality.

I'm surprised at the sheer volume of tropes the site accurately categorizes, though it's lacking in some ways (Unless I'm missing something): it seems to lack tropes involving struggles between materialism and spiritualism, and the asymmetrical struggles between nihilism, relativism, objectivism, and meaning/purpose. The conflict these themes can bring into a character's struggles are huge.. they're big questions in life, after all. I wish there was more on this, because both of those are big conflicts in Jason's world.

Well, now I'm perplexed. I created this combination of traits/history that Jason has mostly piecemeal through RP with others, I didn't really 'plan' him out, although there were some inspirations I had in mind. And it seems I've made a much more complicated character than I intended to (ah, the joys of RP). I ought to flesh Jason out more with a proper character sheet.
So, I finally got some time to dig through the tropes list, and I think the three ones that closest fit the Nihils are:

1)  http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SuccessfulSiblingSyndrome

The whole "big sister's always going to be better than me" vibe is totally a thing in the Nihil clan.  Given Sak's head start in combat, experiences in the AT, fame she's received for the SF/BoB match, her long run of providing FC services to organization she's in, etc., there's almost a feeling of futility from the other sisters to even take a good crack at combat.  Hell, we saw a bit of this rear itself last night, when Akusa took out a fleet, only to jump it into highsec on the last jump with a crimflag and see it get CONCORD'd in its entirety.  To borrow from popular culture:
2)  http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeroicLineage
3)  http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SettlingTheFrontier

Anyone who's interacted with a member of the Nihil family for some length of time has probably heard them talk about where they're from, the little iceball of a planet called Eifer VI, in lowsec Heimatar.  Very rarely does the follow-up question of "why would a pair of ex-CalNav Civire settle outside of the State to raise a family" get asked.  Without spoiling anything, I'll just say its an interesting story.
