Title: Writer's Forum / Sunswept recap
Post by: Xepharious on 03 May 2017, 11:11
Hi all of you fantastic writers out there.

If I were to host an OOC channel forum in a few weeks would people be interested?

I'd be happy to talk about some of the things I ran into with Sunswept or about any of the characters or plotlines, but mainly I'd just love to talk with other writers about their excitement and tough-spots in writing fiction in Eve.

Would more than just one or two people be interested in this?

Always interested in others' experiences with the process.

Stare blankly out of the window, struck by an idea, put it down into a notebook. Sleep over it, wake up, elaborate on idea. Stare blankly out of the window. Struck by phrasing ideas. Get to computer, type the draft. Sleep over it, wake up, drink coffee, look into the monitor, felt that the draft read like crap. Rewrite the entire thing. Sleep over it, wake up, drink coffee, look into the monitor, it still looked like crap. Edit some more. Repeat process another ten or twenty times. Sleep over it, wake up, drink coffee, look into the monitor, it didn't look like crap now.

Publish.

Stare blankly out of the window...

Stare blankly out of the window...

I'm seeing someone in the kitchen of an older home, probably one their grandparents raised up a family in... they're looking out on an idyllic countryside, with haybales in the fields, and hawks riding the breeze.

C/D?

Nah. I am not anywhere as fortunate as Mary Shelley. All I see are concrete skylines.

Staring blankly out of the window helps me contemplate everything I had been exposed to over the years.

My general process?

Start writing.  Get an idea that has absolutely nothing to do with what I'm writing.  Reach across my desk and set a timer for five minutes.  Hate the idea for existing.  Hate my brain for creating it.  Hate my inability to focus.  Hate myself for wanting to run away from the work that's right in front of me, the writing that I get paid to do.  Get angry at the idea for feeding on my hate, and growing stronger and more appealing in the process.  Wonder if it really is the idea's actually growing stronger or my growing weaker.  Notice that the timer's gone off.  Get back to work.

Two or three days/hours later, lose track of time.  Recover sense of it. Discover I've written a draft of the idea. Remind myself that I should be more alarmed about that, but try not to dwell on the implications. Admire the idea's tenacity. Decide to give it twenty-five minutes each day until it grows tired of me. Five or six months/weeks/days later, get to the point where we don't bother each other anymore.  Get back to work.

Sometimes, there are exceptions.  There used to be more, but except for the occasional scraps of terrible poetry on my personal blog, I don't post or publish fiction these days.

Seriously though, the biggest issue I had ever gotten throughout my years of writing (including non-Eve fanfiction) is the near utter lack of a constructive criticism (or feedback of any kind). The only reason why I still keep writing was so as to silent these nagging voices in my head.

"Write! Write! <Beginning phrases of next chapter on repeat>" They haunt me so!

You know, I completely agree. Perhaps we can start commenting on each others work more, used to see it a lot a while ago.
