Title: General New Release and Upcoming Vidjo Games Thread
Post by: Silas Vitalia on 03 Jun 2015, 12:20
As we have separate threads let's leave out Fallout, Star Citizen, Elite, etc.

What's on the horizon you are pumped for and why?

Have any of you played Galactic Civilization 3? Hearing mixed things.

XCOM 2 coming as well.  Enjoyed the first one, even if Koronakesh obliterated me the handful of times we tried multiplayer.

Witcher 3 getting fantastic reviews too?

What else?!

Now that W3 is live, I'm looking forward to more news on Cyberpunk 2077. I played a fair bit of 2020 in my youth and am hoping that the promise of a non-linear adventure in the life-is-cheap/grindcore vein is fulfilled.

What's up with that game? Wasn't that first trailer years ago? Stalled?

10:1 the team making it got cannibalized in the end run of Witcher III.

Galactic Civ 3 interests me, but... I played GalCiv 2, which is a nice 4X game in itself, but it felt... Not plain. Something was lacking. It became old pretty fast.

Also, the ship designer/fitter was annoying (I hear it's awesome now in GalCiv 3).

I will have to watch a few vids to see the depth of the gameplay. The whole idea that everything has to be run on a balanced budget made the game interesting and complex enough, but the lack of... other features was what didn't hold me very long on that game. That and the fact that choosing evil was always full of benefits and choosing good full of cons...

On upcoming releases i can't wait for the last 2 episodes of Life is Strange, which was the biggest surprise for me this year, especially after their latest game which was... good(graphics)/mediocre(gameplay) at the same time.

Also waiting for the slooooow release of the chapters of Dreamfall...

Not sure if there is anything else on my radar...

Witcher 3 is fantastic. I spent so many hours fighting the greatest Gwent players of the land. I slogged through rain and mud to reach every Gwent player to challenge them for money and cards so I can buy more cards. I challenged blacksmiths, merchants, peasants, barons and even kings in that card game and beat them all! Unfortunately, I am now stuck fighting this senile old man whose deck is beyond unfair. Seriously, put down one card and draw two more from deck to lay down on the table? What the bloody hell I am supposed to do against that with my Northern Army deck?

Monster-hunting, difficult decisions with grave consequences and all that? Never heard of it!

Hearts of Iron IV.

The previous in the series veered far too much into terrible UI / Menues / static hex combat military sim for my tastes (or patience), but this looks like a step in a more interesting direction (in my opinion).

Might this be sort of the end all be all military complicated sim if you want to spend days slugging it out in glorious detail rewriting WW2?

Loving the crap out of Witcher 3, personally. It's like a super-pretty Skyrim that actually feels populated by people.

Still not entirely the best at Gwent, but it's fun. I'd totally play it for real.

Galactic Civ III feels like GC II with better graphics and different AI. Sometimes better AI. Sometimes 'one civilization is warlike and begins to roll through all the other AIs who offer little to no resistance.'

I won my first game by ignoring any sort of diplomacy and just conquering all the idiot AIs for their own good so I didn't have to fight another empire seven times my size.

The X-Com II trailer got me to reinstall X-Com. I am looking forward to it.

I have Witcher 3 and have been playing it on and off. It's better than the first three in many ways. I just finished with the Crones and I'd say it's a classic 'you don't get to be a hero' Witcher quest.

My friend at BioWare got me a free, year long subscription to TOR, so I automatically get the new expansion when it rolls out. That ought to get me excited and eager to level my various PCs, but it doesn't. There are a bunch of QoL improvements that won't be hitting until fall, so whenever I start playing, I'll run into something annoying/unnecessary and think 'If I wait a couple more months, this will go away,' and end up logging off.

Once, I loved Dragon Age, but despite my liking Inquisition, I've gotten bored with the series. What I've heard about the upcoming DLC and their plans for DA 4 has just fizzled all my enjoyment.

Alternatively, the new Mass Effect stuff sounds fun.

Like others here, I'm interested in the new Dishonored. I'm hoping that the new Mirror's Edge does well as I know there's a lot banking on that. I’ll pick up Batman: Arkham Knight and expect I’ll like it but not love it. Alternatively, I plan to love Deus Ex: MD – I’ve enjoyed all the games in the series, even Invisible War.

Nu-Doom is apparently a bit of a dud. Divinity: Original Sin is getting an Enhanced Edition, and I’ll probably pick that up. I liked the Tomb Raider reboot, so am looking forward to that.

Most MP isn’t my thing, so no interest in SW: Battlefront, Tom Clancy’s: The Division, or Destiny.

The Battlefront trailer was, to me, one of the most disappointing things in the show. It cemented my opinion that Battlefront has been gutted of a lot of the core mechanics and themes that defined it, and I'm sorry to see that.

Also, the Star Wars lore nerd in me cringed pretty hard, but Battlefront games have never been particularly had in that respect so it gets a pass there.  :P

Yea I've got less than 0 interest in anything Battlefield related.  The SW skin on the games has sometimes been entertaining but I've got a huge mental block these days I really have to struggle to get over for some of the big publishers and the preorder/dlc/marketing shittery to deal with.

The thing is the way they show it, yea it's probably a ton of fun, but we know how those games actually play, a bunch of idiots standing around waiting to spawn into tanks or planes and 90% of your 'team' make you want to facedesk the entire match ;)

NEW DOOM.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NteAPGprDJk  I'll bite if only for nostalgia reasons as Doom 1 shareware on 3.5" hard disk was a pivotal gaming experience for my tiny mind at the time.

I don't know what to think about new Mass Effect.  I know a lot of people had a ton of fun with the multiplayer in ME3 but that's not why I play Mass Effect.  I wouldn't mind if Andromeda was a spinoff or something and we got a proper
M4SS EFFECT sequel.  It looks maybe too 'sexy' and actioned up if that makes sense?

Mirror's edge was just a wonderful, surprising game to come out at all, I really, really appreciated the whole thing. Interested if this one keeps to the same feel.

I liked some of the Fallout 4 stuff they showed, I think the playerbase will really like the crafting and base building elements, and the mod scene will have a field day with this!  But then I remember it's Bethesda and I'm sure you'll get the $400 'horse armor' dog armor DLC :P that you'll have to use to get some other special thing in the game :P

I also have to add SOUTHPARK SEQUEL.  That was the last console game I purchased a few years back, and it was brilliantly hilarious making fun of all the RPG tropes, so funny.  Anyway I will have a blast with this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB6P5gpNan0

I have close to zero interest in battlefield, as it has always been the case for me... Not much into FPS/Shooters. But it sure looks very nice... And that's it. Gameplay looks gimmicky, at best.

I was surprised to see that ME4 finally announced. But it sure shows very little, I suppose they chose to showcase mostly concept arts turned into a video... The concepts are interesting but... the video is pretty much vapid in my opinion. Commander Shepard/X looking for a nice spot of vacations ? Please... Ah well, I'm glad that's a spinoff but totally different story. I don't think sequels are a good thing, especially when there has already been a full story released in 3 titles. Let the old story die in peace, and create a new one, I hope, much better (but I do not hold my breath...). In any case, if it keeps what made ME greatly immersive and impossible to drop without finishing it...

I was a bit hyped by the new Tomb Raider. Mostly environments that were shown, but that looks promising, and brings a lot of variety (I really liked that samurai island in the first one, but it turned quickly pretty much the same thing all over, unlike say, an Uncharted). I really like that new reboot.

Ahh Mirror's Edge 2, finally. Lots of long expected sequels... Always a nice art/visual slap in the face. I'm hyped, as I have always been. But they have very high standards to match/reach with the first one as a baggage.

Fallout 4 ? Looks very interesting, but open worlds... not my thing. Never really got hooked by the setting as well, much like TES.

ME:A - Not supposed to have Shepard in it, according to pretty much every thing Bioware has ever said about subsequent games in the Mass Effect universe after they were done with the third game. Still interested and looking forward to seeing more about it. The trailer/teaser was, honestly, pretty light on meaningful content to analyze.

BF - never touched any of these games, not sure I will. Didn't see the stuff for this one anyway.

Tomb Raider - XB1 exclusive is mutually exclusive with my wallet. A real fucking shame, too; I was looking forward to this one after playing the 2013 reboot.

Mirror's Edge - yes please.

Fallout - might pick it up as stated elsewhere, what with it being in the Boston area and all.

Might take a look at the Division w/ some other people. Beyond that I haven't really been paying a ton of attention to E3 this year.

I feel like ME was always sort of fighting with itself after the first game and the change in ownership.

Things aren't all good or all bad, but it was hard not to see the game shift directions towards more of a commoditized Electronic Arts DLC/microtransaction delivery vehicle over parts 2 and 3.

Vidjo Games are strange in these modern days aren't they?  They've been on a similar trajectory with movies and other entertainment as they get more and more consolidated.  The amount of money you have to invest to compete and put the supposed minimum level of quality out means you are gambling $40 or $50 million ahead of time hoping it sells.

I don't know what the solution is because making a game like Mass Effect nowadays is a huge, expensive, risky investment of capital, and the bean counters at corporate and the people making the game ARENT the same people.  The people writing the story and programming and doing artwork are in love with the series I'm sure but they've got some guy from corporate saying 'take this level out, we package it as DLC later' or 'make this gun separate for later purchase' or 'focus groups want more of 'this' type of combat so we are re-doing the first two levels for this survey result, etc.  It's just a weird thing and I'm old and I since I don't game as much anymore it's jarring to me some of the marketing and chopping up of modern games for the different revenue streams.

On the other hand I absolutely -adored- some of the Mass Effect story purchases.  The 'shadow broker' one was amazing and fantastic.  But then I see stuff like 'pre order to get x in game exclusive items' and I want to burn down their office.

Witcher 3 was amazing.

It's like Skyrim had a love child with Red Dead Redemption.

And I freaking won the gwent high stakes tourney.  Which is really what matters in that game.

Some infos on X-Com II from E3.

Our clean-cut, professional Officer Bradford is now grizzled and sports a beard.
Stationary turrets you can hack. Depending on your soldier's skill, you can nullify it or use it against enemies.
More objective based missions.
More customization for soldiers: hats/hoods, eye-patches, and beards.
Advent Mechs are a new enemy type.
You can call for an evac anywhere in the mission. The ship will drop nearby.

Welcome in most open worlds... The new fad for RPG games, where linear experience gets shotgunned by the press everytime where they somehow turn it consistently in a negative quality instead of a positive one on its own.

Which made me more and more emphasizing with action adventure games now (Uncharted, Tomb Raider, etc), or just outright narrative games ala telltales, that focus ten times more on the story and cinematic experience, which is a bit weird considering my upbringing in solo RPGs...

I think that is more of a USA/Japan style division.   USA rpgs were always more 'open' and Japanese final fantasy style were more on plot 'rails.'

Open world also means *shock* you can release it incomplete and sell the remaining pieces to the customer after release.

Both styles have merits though!

ME was always BioWare's more 'cinematic' game. I remember the lead-up to the original where they constantly referred to their characters as digital actors, played up how Dude!Shepard's face was scanned from a real person's so it was ultra lifelike, and how it was a fully voiced game.

The game play will be similar to ME 3. You shoot things or use powers. Your enemies have barrier/shields and health/armor.

You know, they could release a Mass Effect game with no real time combat and I think most of the built in audience would like it even more.  The shooty parts were often just things for me to get through to get to the talky parts

Kyoko: I thought Mirror's Edge looked great as well.  Wish it wasn't a 'prequel' but Mirror's Edge one was just lightning in a bottle aesthetically, so crisp and visually fantastic.

I think they can get more interesting writing out of a prequel than a sequel or director's cut. The ending of the first game was a bit too constrictive for further fleshing out a universe.

Generally I'd be all "FFS another open-world game; take another shot of vodka," but I think it works wonderfully for a game so about movement such as MEC.

Yeah the new X-Com looks fantastic.

I love that somewhere the designers said that they decided to go with the alien victory because "so many people were losing games and restarting on Impossible it made sense to use that that an alien victory was the most likely outcome so we went with that".

WORLD OF WARSHIPS.

It's super fun.  Super, super fun.  I haven't had this much fun in a while.

Doing suicide-runs in a tiny destroyer and launching a torpedo broadside on a huge ship only to die but have your torpedoes continue on after death and sink a massive battleship, it doesn't get much better.

The game is free, and it's so much fun.

Guys. Guys. (and girls.). Seriously. Warships.  So fun.

A lot of times, I will get the fastest, most fragile ships, and just spam in all chat

WITNESS MEEEEE

Fury Road style as I blaze a path to Valhalla and launch broadside torpedoes.

Had a match yesterday and killed 3 ships, 11 torpedo hits, and a dead carrier, all in a dessie.

That's kind of like soloing a BC gang in a frigate and shouting in local the entire time about glorious death.

Is there health bars and unrealistic material like in WoT ?
Title: Re: General New Release and Upcoming Vidjo Games Thread
Post by: Silas Vitalia on 13 Jul 2015, 09:49
Nothing is realistic about it :P

You have a health bar, the large battleships are appropriately tanky and can get shot all day, the smaller ships could die in one or two volleys.  Torpedoes can kill almost anything in a few hits but they have to get pretty close, sort of like Gallente Blasters x100.  A big ship that will die to torpedoes you can kill the thing shooting the torpedoes almost instantly if you see them in time, but the small ships are 'stealthy' and have detection ranges and stuff.

Also there's an entire other game with the aircraft carriers where you are doing more of an RTS launching fighters and bombers, but I haven't progressed to be cleared for them yet...

There's a lot of components that can get damaged like ship ridder, guns, fires, flooding, etc.  You get a 'repair' ability that has a long cooldown that can stop flooding or fires or rudder damage, but you have to time it so you don't use it and then have another fire started on you right after before the cooldown is ready.

Most ships have a few 'spells' like smokescreen or 'engine boost' sorts of things that are fun.

The things I've seen of world of tanks just have everyone dying in like 3 shots? Looks too fast and intense.  This game is like slow moving capital ship battles.  If you make a mistake you might not know it for 1 minute while you end up wayyy too far into enemy firing range and your giant behemoth can't make it out fast enough.

If you like the WoT kind of game but don't like the healthbar system (which I hate), give War Thunder a whirl. It's remarkably fun, has no healthbars and instead uses a system based on armor penetration and critical systems being damaged/destroyed. I love how they take angling armor into effect and how you have to carefully judge the enemy's position and choose where to hit them based on angle/armor thickness/ammo store location etc.

Hell, you even get to decide how much ammo to take with you, so you can lower the risk of getting shot in the ammo store.

Can't bloody stand the free to play model though, so I quickly fucked off. It's a pity, because it's a great game if you can think a bit tactically and figure out the combat mechanics.

Yea I also hate FTP, but WOW has made it non-required.  I play a few rounds a night and I'm progressing very fast with a new ship every few days.  Once you get a few ships in your port, you can lose a match, switch to the next ship while the losing match is still being played, and then by the time that match is done you'r ship is ready to go again.

If you ignore all the attempts to sell you things and just earn exp from actually playing the game the progressing isn't any different from a regular RPG.

I have played War Thunder for eons (although, not really interested in tanks), but WT has no playable ships yet.

I just think that the very arcadey model of WoT/WoW is not for me. I already have a hard time to cope with the WT arcade mode so...

Yes, War Thunder F2P model is similar and there is absolutely no pay to win, just pay to progress faster. It's mostly a comfort thing. The rest progresses decently well and is not an endless grinding farm (except maybe in tier 5 with jets and stuff). So far I have been loving the game and even after playing it regularly for 2 years or something, I am still addicted. I haven't met a game that managed to hook me up like that since I was a kid...

Eh, War Thunder occasionally goes pay 2 win. Can't recall the name of that tank with the rockets that was only available if you paid, but at least when I played that thing was ridiculously powerful and only available for cash. I suspect they fixed that though. Great game.

Based on their success with Witcher 3, I'm pretty optimistic.

Speaking of TW3, I think their first expansion-size DLC is out soon.

Also, Life is Strange episode 5 is out in 2 weeks. So hyped. And yes, I will stream it for those who were watching me stream episodes 1 through 4.

Recently released as in yesterday?  :)

Armored Warfare Open Beta, purely for its very immersive PVE gameplay and crytek environments. 'Have played more than a little (8k+ matches in WoT) and lost much of my taste for its PVP as well as moba style pvp games in general. I blame this partly on the caustic WoT community and Eve teaching pvp = murder & not a casual sport with vaguely equal teams on two sides of a field.

Assetto Corsa 1.3 was released with a new track, new set of cars and continued improvement to its handling, tire, & physics characteristics. Plays very enjoyably with a 360 controller, even if many of its sim community aficionados are prone to claiming it's only viable with a wheel/pedal setup. Criticisms of note would include a tacked on career mode, and the AI if really new to the game and/or driver in need of improvement as they can be a little violent. Equally, you will not find night driving, multiple light sources and rain/snow as often advertised in other games. Criticisms aside the game is a great, visceral ~driving sim~ first and foremost, great for hot lapping, VS AI once you get used to how they drive, as well as online racing.
