Title: X Days without catacombed posts
Post by: Ché Biko on 31 Dec 2013, 08:02
I didn't want to jinx it by posting something about this earlier, but until today we were going towards the record of successive days without posts being catacombed. Currently, the record stands at 47 days (between January 27th and March 14th, 2012). The streak that ended today lasted 41 days, which makes it about the 3rd or 4th longest streak as taken from the Catacombs forum.

I did see it had been a while... was totally tempted to break the streak earlier >_>

temptation resisted!

While I'm sure the moderators appreciate the break, I can't help but feel the fire's gone out of Backstage a little.

I would have to respectfully disagree. You don't have to act up to the point of getting moderated to be fiery.

Not sure if that's what he meant, but the fire has gone out of backstage a little. Less activity and all.

Though that's still a good achievement in itself.

There has been a substantial fall in overall activity on the forum, from about June 2013, for whatever reason.

Look at the statistics to see this.

A number of people do not appear to be as active as they used to. Additionally, some people that previously posted a lot, have gone as far as to delete their account, because of apparent issues regarding cliques, or groupthink.

It may be the case that a critical mass of people is not currently in existence, when it was before.

CCP live event policy changes may also have had an effect.

Burnout, repetition, disillusionment, may all take their toll on long-term posters who previously generated a lot of useful content.

Posting tends to trend up until summer and hit a low point around the holidays/January. Not that any current lull is entirely cyclic - overall activity also varies due to whatever sorts of forces within and without the RP community, but that is certainly a component.

Edit: As a good example of why that's the case, I have been swamped at work for the past 6 weeks or so. So maybe I just haven't had my mod-hammer poised for every naughty post-weasel that popped up. I also haven't been posting, while previous to that I had a small uptick in my own activity (as a poster, rather than an admin/mod)- which has in the last year or so otherwise lagged a bit.

I just thought people were too busy engaged in RP with meaning and consequence to bother with posting overmuch these days?

Do we count spambots on this tally? If not, we're 17 days without cata.

Can we get an actual counter plugin for the site that shows it at the top page? :D

Nonnonono. I know how this goes...
Soon someone will want an "X days without YDIW" counter, then someone will want an "X days without Vince Hate" counter, and soon there'll be counters all over the place...
And then someone wants an "X days without new counters" counter.
And then rises the counter-countermovement, and the counter-counter-counter movement, that quickly reforms into the countermovement...nobody is sure which side they're on anymore, but regardless...
Bait trolling, flamewars, and Vince Hate engulf the forum, and all counters reset to zero, apart from the "X days without new counters" counter, the forum dies and unit 00000000000001 is born, expulging the catacombs all over reddit as a digital afterbirth, and we all drift apart.

We have a few internal ones.

I'd name a few but I'm sure someone would probably take offense and report my post for it. :P

I'd think that one had a pretty high number on it.  A lot of the things people call MarySue .. makes me wonder if people have never actually seen anyone gazing at them with flashing emerald orbs before.  Not eyes.  Orbs.

Got me to actually chuckle out loud with that one.

Simile and metaphor are extremely dangerous when used improperly. 50 Glazes of Jialei comes to mind as a good example.

I'll be sitting over here laughing while those of you who get the reference start retching and dry-heaving.

There really should be a MarySue character description thread where the goal is to make the most over-the-top and pointlessly verbose depiction of your char.

"Veikitamo looked at Arista with her steel-grey orbs, that were like swimming in into a pool of liquid mercury. Enigmatic, dangerous, highly reactive with right catalysts and just like the woman herself -- liable to cause detrimental health effects with continued exposure."

Might need a point scoring system for maximum justice.

Such as:

- Use of "orbs"
- Mixing of metaphors
- Abuse of Adjectives
- Multiple synonym descriptor
- Thesaurus abuse
- Profligate use of titles
- Amount of time "glaze" or "glazed" is used, bonus points if combined with baked goods.

Etc.

I think there should be a point per a certain number of people they've killed as a bad-ass assassin marine commando. I'm thinking one point per Hitler.

Arista gently inclines her head, her ruby tresses cascading over her visage to obscure her ivory skin.  Her glittering grey orbs scanned the vellum pages of the thesaurus with intensity.

She would not allow herself to lose in this contest.  Not since she witnessed the deaths of so many all those years ago would she allow such failures in her life.  Even though the reader would have no idea what this exposition was even about, Arista made sure they knew, so that they could  not cry foul when she made some obscure statement later connected to an illogical action and could point to this random, nearly pointless sentence that by then would be months old.

On another note --
... .. my God.. what have I started...

The best similies for true overwriting are of course the full blown Homeric type ones:

Gaven's Shining Golden Tormentor stalked the space-lanes looking for prey. Lo! A Rifter! The Golden Claw descended upon the ill-equipped foe like a fearless golden lion assaults a young hunter, avoiding the rusting ill-maintained spear, scattering the hapless fool's guts upon the ground.

Or something like that.
