So the nightmare is over. I can’t tell whether the doings I’ve been briefly involved with contributed to the downfall or not. Neither I can’t get rid of the impression that it all has been unreal, like a staged performance.
Yet for the very first time I cannot but think about Heth. All these years picturing him as a puppet, a clay figure, as the target of all my hatred… I realize he has been… may still be… a human being. Disappearances taste bittersweet, not letting you either celebrate or mourn them.
Contradictions. Somehow the low, quiet breathing of the big eight on my neck… that very air that I myself breathed for years to an end now feels strange… chilly… absent.
