Title: Art; uniforms or otherwise!
Post by: Ava Starfire on 01 Sep 2012, 17:56
Decided to make a thread where we can just post any art we may do (or find, if you locate especially good pics that you want to share, link them here, with credit to the artist or site, please). This can be anything, digital art, ink, pencil... lets make the world of eve feel like a world.

Ava visiting a bazaar in Hek (And SPOILER, page 1, not lettered yet, of my forthcoming comic; hopefully it'll be well recieved, eh?)

Feel free to offer CONSTRUCTIVE criticism to me, or any other artist here; I wanted to capture a "Bazaar/busy city street in a market" sort of feel, plus a "sci-fi" feel. A friend mentioned color would help, but... I dont color! Hehe. Any feedback is always great.

Lovely work, Ava! :D Successfully drawing people interacting with one another = hard XD I think you pulled it off quite nicely here!

I agree with your friend in that color will help capture the mood you want more solidly; perhaps just try blocking some in digitally (if possible!) to see how you feel about it, and take it or leave it as you like, eh?

I made this quick sketch the other day as a gift for a friend -- it's an inside joke she came up with, but it's entirely possible that Red would do something like this for some extra cash XD

That is awesome! It looks like the sort of ad you would see in a fasion mag, or maybe before a youtube video! I love how she does, indeed, have an "attitude" evident in her expression and pose.

I have no idea how to digitally color, sadly. I do my work with 4H and 2H pencil and a sketchbook... if i am feeling reeeally high tech, i might grab my square, compass, or a french curve set. That's sadly about as technical as I get.

I wanted lots of glowing neon lights and stuff, but hard to catch with pencil alone; maybe ill try it again, with more darkness/maybe rain wetted ground for reflections... bah.

You color. Youre like 20 up on me!

Here we go. Ava, and Skadi, by popular demand, heathening it up in Mikramurka.

The rifle is indeed old. There may even be a story about it...

While I was on my trip yesterday, I made an EVE related sketch in my travel sketchbook; it's the skyline of one of the Angel megalopoli on the surface of Doril II.
I always imagined Angel cities in the Heaven constellation as a certain mix between Las Vegas, Tortuga and Blade Runner with a dash of a noir setting from Frank Miller's Sin City, and architecturally an eclectic mix between styles of all 4 main eve empires. (and nope, I don't have a scanner)

Some more stuff I did earlier, more architectural than artsy, but thought I'd slap it here. You're already familiar with the pictures of public areas of the Ivory Tower, so I'll keep those out:

Nice rifle. I'm guessing a family heirloom from way-back, not modern standard issue ;)

BTW, I did not know the Minmatar used Galactic Basic (from Star Wars) as a written language. I'm guessing that was not intentional but rather a known/unknown source of inspiration.

Nice !

What I find really good in your pic Ava is the composition (is that the right word ?) of the image, and also especially the posing of the character (special mention to the child and the mother). It works well.

Also, meddling with contrast levels and contrast luminosity in photoshop, and then adding a HDR pass gave me this :

Note : yeah Bloodbird I too wondered if that was some form of aurebesh but since I can read it I can safely say that Ava's alphabet is not aurebesh (yeah im weird like that, with friends we used aurebesh in school to send coded messages to each other in classrooms :p).

Warning : lots of (big) images.

My uniforms designs are in the other thread already but I can re-post them here. I haven't found the time and motivation to draw more of them yet, even if I still have a few ideas.

Holy crap, this thread is going places. Leo, that city scape is incredible; if you were after Vegas meets Blade Runner, id say you got it. I love the holographic signs!

Lyn, your art is gorgeous. The pics you drew of lyn blew my mind, the realism is wonderful. Thank you also for darkening up my pic, that looks great.

And no, I dont know if i thought about the Star wars letters or not subconsciously, but I was actually thinking about the "dragon" alphabet from skyrim when I did it.

More please folks!

Thanks Ava, and the holo signs were the last thing I put on it and thought the sketch was missing ^_^

Also Lyn, as I was just telling to Ava in the OOC, your style reminds me a lot of Josip Vaništa's work:
Not sure if you're familiar with his work, but overall very good stuff! Just thought I'd let you know.
Also Ava, I love the kid holding the rifter toy in the first one. As for the second... fuck, will I have to make a drawing of Mr. Coon now?

I would truly be incapable of doing surreal stuff myself. Or very badly. I dont have your loosened stroke and what I do is very rigid.

More people posting, awesome! Salena, I love your detail and your use of ink on the clothes! Saede, your art always gives me a new way of looking at things, I really like the surrealism. If i wanted someone to draw what Ava sees on a vision quest, I would look no further. Ura, close ups like that are hard; i dont do them, and kudos for doing quite well at it. I love her hair, it looks like actual hair, a bit unkepmt... like real hair!

I am a TERRIBLE artist, and am in the process of trying to convince Kiki/Saede to make this logo I made up more pretty. But this is what I sketched last night. It's a banner the Angel-Serpentis-Syndicate might use at their joint meetings where they discuss evil piwate business.

I am on the other hand going to keep enjoying the art posted here and let the tread go on it's way without further derailment :)

Speaking of art, you seem to have missed the Serpentis 'S' in the middle of the emblem.

He also included the Serpentis S cutting the Cartel emblem in half on the middle with the Syndicate emblem above an in the middle. Your version missed the S cut, IIRC.

Yeah Leo, something like that. But as Bird pointed out, the Serpentis "S" cutting through the bottom as well. You know, the Unified Crime Lords flag and all. I'd try to think up one for Sansha-Blooders-Guristas but that doesn't sound easy.

I quite like how you draw hands and feet actually, them being slightly oversized I feel like gives the art a more animated appearance, it conveys movement better, if that makes any sense.

There is nothing wrong with her feet. Or her hands. Or any of her other proportions. If anything she looks more realistically built, adding to the appeal towards this freaking pro-level drawing.

I had half your mad skillz, I'd make pictures of my own.

Inking test and practice continues; inking makes your details pop, for sure. It also magnifies screwup and makes empty spaces where theyre SHOULD BE STUFF even more obvious! I will play with it more tomorrow, but here's what I got done today; 1st day ever inking.

The snowmachine, the vehicles that people in Mikramurka use to move themselves and their families and in general get around when they need to get there faster than by walking. In the winter, they just rig runners on the thing if they need to use it. Fun to draw, and obviously, quite heavily influenced by the german Kettenkrad

For a while we have been using a ship in our inside corp RP, a Nephilim class dropship/corvette used by Angels, an upgraded basic corvette Republic Fleet uses.
I haven't worked on it much lately and it's all in a very basic design phase, but given Ava's biker PzKpfWgn, I thought I'd post it, just for the sake of keeping the continuity.

This is very old, very nice, and sadly, so very not mine. However it was available on the old EVE-O site under fan-art for some time under the title "The girlies". I liked it so much I shamelessly borrowedstole it and printed out a version to hang on my wall. It's still there, and recently I managed to salvage an old drive, where I found the digital version again - I feared it was lost forever when it vanished from EVE-O soon after I acquired it.

Evelyn's more or less correct, but I think the terminology is "not exclusively straight". It's in the EULA in really tiny font. Almost looks like dirt on your screen, actually.

And Red, I've actually seen that excuse - that men have "fewer soft bits" (the actual line given, no joke) - used IC as an excuse for not having had any male partners in a couple years.

The writings in Ava's picture reminded me of it, and I shared a table of the symbols to show why.

Wow, this thread is great! I love your drawings, Ava! I have seen them around in the profiles of players who are proudly showing them off. It figures that there is a lot more material I hadn't seen yet  :)

And Evelyn, I like your style and imagination. You nail everything down to the small details.

I'm not in the same league as the artists here who make their own work. What I do is what i call: "photofrankenstein" where I merge different parts of random images I find online or from screenshots in the game. The only things I need to draw myself are some missing details. I then rescale, recolor, shift and rotate until it all fits. Sadly I lack the time to learn to properly draw by myself, so I rarely draw anything from scratch. So most of the time I am limited by the composition of the main image I chose to work with. So the result looks a little out of place in EVE. But it is useful in my attempts to convey a story. Like the following image that I made for my former CEO at the Khanid Trade Syndicate.

The image was the graphic illustration to a story i wrote about an "infomorph collective" (OOC: a slew of alts).

It is good enough for my RP stories and forum posts, etc. But I can't truly publish any of it and claim it to be completely my own work, though.

Some fricking good works here! Almost makes me want to create some. Perhaps I'll do so some day.
So far, the only EVE related visual art I did was IC, an abstract painting relating to the Sani Sabik, titled "Let It Flow", IIRC:
Ché promised a certain lady he would make another version of this one, but he's taking his time.

Also, Ava, some constructive critisism: Practice at creating more diversity in your faces, the khanid lady looks a lot like Ava. Oh, and I loved the kid in the first drawing you posted as well.
And uhm...mind if I "finish" your last drawing? :P ;)

@Evelyn: LOVE this picture! I also appreciate the nod to Tron, very classy!

@Lucius: I still don't get how you can mash all these things together and come out with something that looks as good as your graphics do, there's an art unto that itself I think.

@Che: I don't get most art, but I do like the look of this one, and it seems rather symbolic of the growing Sani Sabik plague infesting the cluster :)

Also, as I just read this thread for the first time from front to back, just want to say that this drawing is awesome:

I really miss the old Gallente hairstyles, they were trendy and helped give the game a bit of "far future" feel to it.  Sort of the "we're doing whatever we want to do, deal with it" attitude.

Today's styles make most women seem like they're goth, princess Leia, or butch. :(

Yeah, I just saw (http://www.wearysloth.com/Gallery/ActorsO/13171-23787.jpg) again, and gave me some nostalgic feelings as well. I like the new hairstyles as well, but some old favourites are definitely missed, like the old Intaki Mohawk, which is the haircut Ché actually has/wants.

The new character generator is great, and most characters seem much more human than before. I miss a lot of what made EVE avatars sci-fi though. Amarr need silver tattoos and giant headdresses. Caldari need metal faces (and chins!) gallente need multicolored hair and clear polymer hairpins that look like stations.

Rin already had one go-around as a slave. She had to get shot to get out of that one! (It's a long story)

Also, Evelyn - I showed that to my alliance mates, and they thought it was really funny as well.

Sakura Nihil - i've not done commissions very often. usually just for friends. though i'm not opposed to the idea i guess. as far as rates... *shrugs* something akin to minimum wage, lol... though i'm not sure how realistic that is. or how exactly it might convert to isk. :P

Fair enough.  Let me know if you're ever interested in the idea, consider it an open offer.

Some awesome stuff here. I LOVE the little Slaver hound plushie!! I am jealous of you people who do so well in color. I havent been doing much lately, having some pretty serious troubles with depression. I saw a doctor about it, finally, and have been given some meds (and an OK from the charity who pays it) to see a psychiatrist. Hopefully I can get this balanced, because when I am "down", I just do not want to do anything.

Color is new to me, and the medium I have available is some color pencils. The other day I sketched and colored this one. Need better pencils...

Also, there was this thread (http://backstage.eve-inspiracy.com/index.php?topic=319.0) that also included non-eve related art.

So I did some more art. Practice makes perfect, and all that. Still having problems with hair, but I'm happy with the eyes and lips. One day I hope to get even better. But it'll take a while.

I've been learning to draw, progress is kinda slow but I think I've improved a lot in the last 11 ish days.

This is probably the first full face I've drawn, it's meant to be Aradina but I messed up the eye enough that I covered it in a cybernetic. The lines are chicken scratchy, which isn't good but I'm fairly proud of it.
I drew that on the 5th and then didn't practice again until the 9th. Now I'm going to be trying to sketch at least one eve character portrait a day. I won't spam this thread with those though :P

Did a portrait of John Revenent. Like Jules, it's far from perfect, and there's lots that could be done with it. But I'm satisfied with it for now, and next time I'll do better. Like Aradina, I think I'm going to do a drawing a day for practice :) First male I've drawn. Beards are silly.

I was inspired, so I did another. Aradina!
If anyone is wondering, what my process is, is getting a picture of an actor, actress, or model, then using that as my go-to for how I want it to look. I then add details that match the characters I'm drawing and adjust as needed.

EDIT: There may or may not also be rum involved.

Inspired by those I pulled out my coal pencils and started sketching, referencing the RL goth model I've based Tein's IG avatar on and which it barely even resembles due to very limited customization... and I must say I was pleasantly surprised that after at least 10 years of not drawing much at all, I almost even got proportions right... Almost. Hmm. Gotta keep at it.

I'm hoping that one is getting better as time goes on. It just takes practice. I'll likely be looking into redoing a couple I'm not happy with, later down the road.

If anyone is interested in their character being chibified, I'm happy to do so. I don't have a set price, and instead go by ISK donation. What may be an acceptable amount for one person, may not be possible for another, and I want to be able to provide for everyone. Contact me via message here, or on discord (sara#0709), and we can discuss how to get things rolling for you!
