Post by: Avio Yaken on 20 Oct 2014, 15:17
Hey o/ been awhile..hows it going? Me again..

So i was talking to a duster roleplayer today about..Role playing

Was telling him how i was pretty much one of the pioneer duster RPers..trying to relate with him...then this was said

Thal Vadam > congratulations, you invented our stereotype that we suffer under

Avio Yaken > Which is?

Thal Vadam > we are all death hungry criminals who only enjoy killing, dying, and getting drunk as F***

Thal Vadam > what makes me think you started was you said you were the first, i've joined some RP channels where the first thing said to me was "Are you like Foley Jones?"

Soooo despite Foley being a terrible character and me being a "Shit stain on the Rp community"

...Should i feel good about this? i kinda feel good my name is known, albeit not in the good kind of way

I think he posts here as well.

I dunno, you're famous for something, but not something you're proud of. double edged sword or something.

Foley, please. As long as you have fun that is all that matters. It's a game, play it however you want. I actually like your characters, since you at least play with people instead of hiding behind forums. Don't let Thal discourage you.

Let me put myself in Thal's shoes; How many people shit up Blood Raider/Sani Sabik rp before Anya showed up? Who cares?

Thal, it doesn't matter what Foley has done. Stop bitching and make the character you want to play and have fun with it.

Thal is not bitching, in fact he is the right, as he was saying OTHER people are bitching, saying because of my history i gave them all a bad impression of dust Rpers, thus making him look bad

(if i understand it correctly)

And frankly, i could care less if im infamous now....i left my mark, even though i wrote it in shit, and that is all that matter

But thank you for your comment Anya :3 you were always mah favorite blood raider

Generally, I'm willing to attribute the stereotype not to you being "bad at RP" but to you being inexperienced, at least in the EVE universe.

It did seem like a lot of things you did were of the "omg this is cool and funny and I can't die so WHY THE FUCK NOT" variety, which is not a bad thing - it's just something that is less... nuanced, I guess? It's something to be expected for people who are new to it and jump in headfirst rather than carefully dipping their toes in.

On the other hand, DUSTers die a lot more frequently than capsuleers. It's not unreasonable that they'd go batshit crazy (or some variant thereof) a lot faster as a result.

This. For example, Kala hasn't lost a pod in more than 90 days. I imagine the average Duster dies maybe that many times per week.

I think there is only one thing I don't like in character "Foley Jones"
That he is very rarely seen  :P

The word 'stereotype' has a negative connotation today. We have come to associate the word with ignorantly lumping genders/ ethnic groups into one category and slapping a descriptive label with negative associations on them. Jews like money, Blacks are lazy, Irish are drunks and so on.

However, character 'stereotypes' was something originally invented by the film industry. (I think it was the Russian Kinopravda in an Eisenstien film actually.) Until that time, actors would just play any role they were handed and expect that the audience found it convincing.

For example, in a scene with a thief, a Priest, and a soldier, the roles are played by:

1. A middle aged man with a long beard,
2. An athletic clean shaven man with short hair,
3. and a scruffy looking man with wild hair and shifty eyes.

Is it possible that the solider could be the old man with the beard? It is unlikely, but possible. Can priests be athletic clean shaven men? Certainly! Could a priest be a scruffy looking man with wild hair and shifty eyes? Absolutely!

In the mind of the audience though, beards = Priests, Athletes = Soldiers, shifty eyes = Thief.

In EVE roleplay, Prime fiction cultural stereotypes are the acorn from which mighty oaks grow.

Amarr = Religion,
Caldari = Corporatism,
Minmatar = Rebel slaves,
Gallente = Hippies.

It's up to you to decide how stereotypical your character's behaviour  is, or isn't. Do you progress towards the stereotype, or veer away from it? There are Amarrian Atheists and Caldari Communists, but these characters wouldn't be thrown into sharp relief unless there was the stereotype of their faction as a whole.

TL;DR: Stereotypes are bad in real life, but a useful mechanism in fiction.

I've never roleplayed with you, so I can't comment on you specifically. Though I think I have been a dick to you OOCly.

In my mind at least, there is no 'stereotype Dust RPer' because I simply don't see that many of them except PIE dusters.

Not extensively. It was a minor incident not long after you had started playing.
