Title: Nelson Mandela dies.
Post by: kalaratiri on 05 Dec 2013, 16:32
Nelson Mandela has died, surrounded by his family. There have been several eulogies released already, the best of which (in my opinion) from Sir Ian McKellen.

Tragic. For South Africa especially.

R.I.P.  One of the true greats in recent history.  One of his quotes always gave me strength:

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

They dedicated the chorus' performance of Bawo Thixo Somandla (https://soundcloud.com/techmanpetrie/wpi-glee-club-bawo-thixo-somandla) (lyrics (http://difelahymns.wordpress.com/2011/04/27/bawo-thixo-somandla-translated/)) to Mandela at our concert tonight. There was a very audible response of shock when they said it. :(

I wasn't sure if anything was going to be said since it was sort of last-minute notice and was planning on poking someone about it but between all the warm-up rehearsals before the concert I didn't get a chance; I'm glad that the choral director thought of it too.

He lived a great life;

His greatness was not just in what he did, but also what he did not do.

His success and work for unification can be seen in how everyone in the country mourns him.

Now we have to carry on what he started.

Probably my favorite quote by him...

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."

Sleep in paradise, Mr. Mandela.

Yeah pretty much...

I'll refrain from being cynical and say that his heart was at the right place, at least...

This is great.

People are having parties celebrating him all over the country.

And it is as if there is a mood of introspection, where everyone reflects on his life and compares it to their own.

People are phoning in to radio stations, telling stories about him. Things he did that one would not normally have known about.

Even his death has a positive impact.
