Title: Gallente name for Jante Law?
Post by: Seriphyn on 15 Oct 2013, 19:41
So, as I flesh out more and more of Elusenia, it very much leans on the socialist rather than libertarian side of Gallentean democracy (as in social democracy, not communist/Marxist). The 200,000km^2 or so of Elusenian land was unoccupied, and has been settled for the first time. As a result, everyone has come here on their own free will. Therefore, they can deport themselves if they try to claim any extra entitlement above the others. Everyone is here to contribute to the common welfare, and if you don't like it, you leave. We're still Gallenteans, after all.

This is very similar to Jante Law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_Jante) of Scandinavia, which is a strong influence on Elusenia of being a "hands-on" sort of state. This communalistic, micromanaging framework is different from the Caldari system in that it is still based on equality, not hierarchy. Decision-making is not delegated upwards to the anointed worthy, instead it fundamentally rests with the masses.

I intend to iterate on Elusenia's EVElopedia page (http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Elusenia), and figured of developing the Culture section to cover this, since it's basically about "GREEK SEX AND GIRLS" right now. Therefore, I figured to rack your brains a bit...what could the Gallentean version of "Jante Law" be called?

I know nothing about Jante's law but this made me think of Bruce Sterling's book Distraction. In it there are nomad gangs who govern themselves with reputation servers. Seemed like something you might find interesting/relevant.

There we go: Sociocracy.

I'm confused. Do you want to make something based on the fictional Jante Law or on the social phenomenon of the Jante Law?

Sorry, just a name that sounds Gallente enough, that titles the in-universe equivalent of it.

"Sociocracy" (with a small s) could be something to use...might explain where the Sociocrats got their name (other than...well, social democracy)

Or even, you know, sociocracy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociocracy) :)

Hey, there we go. See, whenever I have a lore question, I could look it up, or I could just wait until the answer shows up on a thread. (The question was what political party AOK belongs to -- clearly she's a Sociocrat -- or, more likely, she strategically votes Sociocrat while belonging to some obscure left-libertarian/satirical party).
