I'd pick someone aligned with some faction / ideology and actually have that person behave accordingly.  You know, take someone in an anti-pirate group and have him / her stop dating / sleeping with pirates.  Pick a Nation-hater and have said character actually behave negatively toward Nation members or vice versa.  Or perhaps I'd pick such a faction-aligned person and renounce allegiance to said faction in order to keep fraternizing with the enemy as if we're BFFs.
