"The Scope", I.e. That thing that appeared on the side as you log in and when you click on the news board, is stone cold dead.
You know it, I know it, your second cousin twice removed knows it.
Not only have they stopped giving us snippets of life in the Eve universe, but they now advertise large scale ooc events oocly, blowing the concept that everything in the big blue yonder is ic clean out of the water. (although I do concede that I don't know if this has happened before). I am now at the point where I seem to see ic disputes recycled almost weekly. Sure it was fun to talk the talk about slavery, when I was a month old pilot. But now veterans are doing it too, the same points over and over.
Why? Because there has been no single development for over 3 years.
So, brimming with a mixture of emo-teen despair and Viking rage I peruse the IGS when for the first time I actually click on the link to tech4news, and here it is: http://tech4news.org/
In short, I am impressed. Details, current and relevant events, and a delicious sprinkling of controversy. I found myself wanting and needing to read more, rekindling the kind of hope I had when Voyeur studios launched, hope that's still around.
I believe this kind of approach represents the way forward for IC news and hence the future of RP in EVE. Really, it's the only way forward seeing as CCP is either unable or unwilling to develop the backstory we need as the foundation for player created content.
So there's the answer, if you want to keep the fire going, read the Tech 4 News page. Hell, give them some leads to persue, from the looks of that they're good at following up.
Happy flying!
tl;dr The scope is cold turkey. Read tech 4 news! I endorse this product/service :bear: Also, Voyeur? You guys still around?

The Scope being dead is not news.

The Scope being dead is not news.
Well observed. That was part of the point of writing this.
-
If people did actually get back to me on things like they said they would, ANN (http://www.arcadianewsnetwork.net/)would be a pretty good source for IC fluff/goings-on.
I'm pushing stuff out where I can, but it's not something I can do at any speed all by myself.
-
I've considered looking more heavily into, even working at Tech4/ANN (or even starting my own news source) but one thing that has always bugged me about player news sources is that they seem to very often slide into supporting one side or another, and frankly that doesn't appeal to me. If I'm going to write news and not propoganda, I'd very much like to be working for an unbiased (or at least not so obviously biased) news source.
-
I don't think there really much danger of bias here, or at least not yet.
I mean let's face it, this whole freedom fighter of the year thing was the result of one over enthusiastic intern, who was subsequently removed from her position
-
Yeah, I do follow T4N and wish them luck in their endeavours, especially considering the mess their first correspondent got into in W-space.
-
T4N isn't biased?
Srs?
-
Eh, even if there wasn't bias people would still claim it. The question is, in my mind, is it engaging and does it provide some immersion?
-
We need much, much more of this sort of thing. Kudos to those taking the time to maintain, update, and contribute.

Hello there. You may not know me, but my name is Arydanika (Dani) and I am part of the team working on the Tech4 News project. First, thank you to those that have supported the project. Your support means a lot to us. This project is a huge undertaking and is a labor of love. Just like you; all that we write produce, etc is unpaid hardwork and effort used to bring something immersion and wonderful to a game we enjoy playing at some level.
On the subject of bias I have to say this. It's hard to any of us to be bias because Tech4 is the first time any of us have moved in to the "RP arena." Now you may find youself saying, "But Article X is surely Matari sided." or "That Professor is totally Amarr loving!" Those things are true, but that does not make Tech4 as a whole bias.
The article about Houla is very one sided. However, the Matari perspective was the only thing I had to work with. There was no Amarr side of the story posted, so I had to work with what was posted. Also, there are some incorrect facts. :D Thank you for noticing. Tech4 is a non-caspsuleer entity and the article was written by a fresh faced intern. It should also be noted the Intern has been punished for infractions.
That said, I extend an offer you to all. Tech4 news wants to report on player activity. We want to post RP fluff news reports about side story lines that players find interesting. The only thing is.. we need your help to do that.
Lead, tip offs, eve-mails, anonymous phone calls; we accept them all. If you have some great feat the Amarrian Empire... The Professor is one Empress loving SOB. Have an interesting tip about some Caldari espionage? I'm sure the drop/spiced quafe laden Paydas might air it... if you grease his palm right. Have some bad information that you want to spread because that's just what you do? The Intern might be naive enough to believe you if the story is convincing.
So I leave it in your hands Roleplayers of New Eden. The Tech4 News Tip Line is now open.
-
Don't take my earlier snark wrong, I'm very happy to see Tech 4 on the scene.
I love their style and the flair of the site, not to mention the twist of "hacked" news, as opposed to ANN's "free source" news. (Just so we're clear, I only compare the two because they're the only player-run IC news sources I know of). So I wish them good luck and hope they keep things running.

No love for Gutter Press? :(
Ok absolute lack of fact in all but one articles but I love the concept of trash media, even if the real world version infuriates me.

Gutter Press is like Fox News.
It's not "news" and its not "journalism," so when we talk about one of those two things, we can't include those organizations.
-
<3 Gutter Press
-
Sen-Sational!
-
Weird, I bring up Gutter Press and we get a new article.
Clearly they read the IGS! Time to start casting fingerpoints of suspicion.
:blames Gottii:
-
I commented on the Huola article (and since it was IC, so was my comment), and my only problem was that even after acknowledging the bias and the incorrect facts, there was no attempt to correct either of the instances.

Well lets not write them off just yet its early days :)
Besides, its not like they ignore the Amarr. And from what I understand taking Huola was a noteworthy acheivement. If the Amarr do something simmilar, let them know, they;ll probably publish it
On a sidenote, doesnt your back hurt with all those medals ;)

The TLF HQ systems have fallen. Dal. Auga. Kourmonen. We hold all our HQ systems. Amarr is dominating (like it matters lol) for the time being, which, thanks to CCP's not giving a fuck about us, can be reversed completely in mere hours.
However, being Amarr, we are not expecting anyone else to cheer us on. No one ever has, and if someone started to, I think we'd lose something important about ourselves. I have many problems with my militia, but one of the strengths of the core Amarr corporations right now is the way that morale tends to remain steady despite setbacks, and without much in the way of propaganda needed.
We know that each small step made by the TLF will be trumpeted from every corner they can get the message out to to bolster internal morale. This is also fine. The health of both militias depend on each other, and the minnies are a more morale-dependent group at this point (the degree of such has waxed and waned over the last year).
Anything that gets their FCs to engage is a good thing for all of us. Without good fights we all die off.
It's worth nothing, though, that when TLF is not doing so well, like this week, that efforts to cheerlead thier side can get a bit pathetic and nasty, like here: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=48524 (https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=48524)
Compared to that sort of bollocks, a bit of news partial to the other side is no big deal really, but don't piss on our shoes and tell us it's raining. No one wants the evil slavers to win. We know the score. If you're playing Amarrian, then by definition you love to be hated, love to play an arrogant prick, or are simply a masochist to begin with.
-
Yeah, Eran's bio-massing has nothing to do anything in-game, but the Minmatar milita was very quick to jump on the "LOL I KILLED HIM!!1!" and "LOLOL WE SO WIN!" thought trains.
'Course this is more the "Minmatar-militia-at-large," as I don't really see it from the Minmatar RP community.

You could have just as easily made a "he killed himself in shame" thread. Minmatar got there first.
I mean he's bio-massed, so... not a lot of ways to avoid it ICly. Easy to prove he's dead.

There are very few real RP corps in the minmatar militia. Aside from my own, there is Huang Yinglong, who are a primarily Vherokior corporation, and there is Murientor tribe, who as far as I am aware are not very active right now. Thats pretty much it. A lot of the IGS posts from militia members recently have been pseudo-RPers, doing something IC on the IGS, but never or very rarely RP in game.
It makes me a bit :s

Yes, I (we) are, but not really active in EVE too much at the moment. I've been considering doing some weekly articles on current events and interviews with some interesting personalities, but my motivation has been lackluster at best. I'm all about low maintenance at this point, so if something does arise it won't be as 'grandiose' as our previous project. Honestly, what I'd prefer to see in my news, especially directed at capsuleers, is capsuleer-focused information, not just player-made PF-fluff.
-
Everybody knows that Amarr are evil and Minmatar are emo victims anyway.

See thats the thing with RP, no one IRL wants evil slavers to win, but thing is anyone who remotely RPs has at least some ability to leave it at the door.
Yes the Amarr are a shifty, back-stabbing, self-righteous, god-squad according to most IC opinions outside the empire. However they are still about 30-40% of empire and influence EVE accordingly. They have a seat at all diplomatic tables, their clout in culture, military, and technology is enormous. The Empire is big and important, and if you're running a self-professed non biassed news agency (and you want to do it well), not something to be pissed all over lightly.
The point being thus: The idea that T4N is "Non-biased... but seekritly anti-amarr lolz" is ludicrous. One article. One blunder by an eager intern. But ynow, any excuse to talk about FW fail, w/e ...
*edit: Typo
-
To me it seems far from just another excuse to rant about FW's failings -- it's a legitimate point people have noted before, that often there is a tendency to gravitate towards factions perceived as "nicer", or to take factions and turn a blind eye to their darker elements. Leads to a lot of people playing by, as a few people put it, RL western moralities -- and from there a loss of depth in what is potentially a diverse system of values and ethics.
That said, I have been bittervet as all fuck recently. >_>
-
Yeah, Eran's bio-massing has nothing to do anything in-game, but the Minmatar milita was very quick to jump on the "LOL I KILLED HIM!!1!" and "LOLOL WE SO WIN!" thought trains.
It's the equivalent of a bomb going off and half a dozen groups popping up to claim responsibility. I thought it was a rather nice touch, in the sense of "realistic things happening spontaneously in the gameworld".
There are very few real RP corps in the minmatar militia. [....] A lot of the IGS posts from militia members recently have been pseudo-RPers, doing something IC on the IGS, but never or very rarely RP in game.
This brought me right back to earlier discussions about what constitutes a roleplay corp. That sounds to me like one of the definitions of RP-lite. I'm reluctant to call roleplay "pseudo" unless it's clearly OOC-led trolling, even though my own preference is strongly immersionist.
-
This whole Eran death thing has been completely hijacked incidentally.
It would be a nice touch, this whole "I killed him" thing, of it wasn't a blatant troll both ICly and OOCly.
Which is why instead of people shouting stupid things on the IGS, player made news agencies should take up more of the posts just in general.
-
Yes. As much as it can be realistic and very interesting to see a lot of organization jumping on the occasion to claim their involvement in Eran "death", I just found this whole topic totally ludicrous, full of non credible hatred and troll. It even started not to sound really "RP" to me after 1 or 2 pages.
<- Bittervet as fuck too.
-
I enjoyed being able to tell a transhumanist "I told you so" :)

Thanks for the input on Tech4 News and the state of RP coverage in general. Further to this thread, I've posted a proposal of sorts [http://backstage.eve-inspiracy.com/index.php?topic=2999.0 (http://backstage.eve-inspiracy.com/index.php?topic=2999.0)].
I'd appreciate your input.
