Since I know many of you don't read the Intergalactic Summit but visit here frequently, I figured I'd pass the word on that the Racing League: Season 2.0 has been announced (https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=23282&find=unread) and is just around the corner. The first event starts on Saturday, November 5th @ 14:00 game time, and will run weekly into early January.
For those of you who have never heard of the Racing League before, allow me to give you a brief overview. Pilots compete (in space!) in three classes (interceptors, frigates, and heavy frigates [Assault frigates, Electronic Attack Frigates, and Stealth Bombers]) simultaneously through a series of waypoints located in star systems across New Eden. Each waypoint is an anchored container (in low sec) at a star, asteroid belt, gate, etc., containing the the location of the next point. Racers have to access each waypoint, and those who reach the finish line fastest earn the most points. Racers can fly individually and/or join a team to compete against other teams for fortune and glory. Combat is allowed in the League between the racers.
The full rules can be found on this handy PDF document (http://www.pleasure-hub.com/data/NERA/NERA_Rules_20.pdf).
Last season pulled in over four billion ISK in sponsorship money, and we're setting the bar higher, hopefully to reach at least five billion before the end of the season. So far we've just hit the one billion mark with several others lined up to join our family of sponsors. If you want to know how to sponsor us, visit this link (http://www.pleasure-hub.com/nera/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=110) for all the details.

I'm not a sports person in RL, so I don't really understand the concept of sponsorship. I am under the impression that a sponsor gives a team working capitol to spend, and in return, they get a cut of the tickets sold or something?
Anyways, how does sponsorship work here with this EVE Racing League?
-
Sponsorship is more like buying advertising. You pay a bunch of money to sponsor someone and they wear your logo around. For example, NASCAR race cars are covered in decals from their corporate sponsors.
I'm not entirely sure how this works for EVE, but who knows. Maybe they found a way to turn a profit from it.
-
Well, pretty much what Victoria said. The League promotes their sponsors in a variety of ways in exchange for financial contribution. All that money then goes to season participants in the events. I don't make a profit on any of that. :o
-
The basics of sponsorship:
1) Sponsor provides League with ISK
2) League provides sponsor with shameless promotion
3) Venture Racing Team wins League's ISK
This system makes Norrin very happy indeed.

Team s should preregister but individual/team less pilots can just show up and register in decent time before each race?
-
Yes. Team registrations (5mil) are good for the entire season. For individual events, I collect event fees an hour prior to the start of the event. (1mil per person)

The results (https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=319414#post319414) are up from Saturday's event, and judging from the turnout and the excitement even from our vets, I think this is going to be a good season. We have some solid teams, some new teams on the field, and lots of competition for everyone. :cube:

RL is taking my sat mornings from me :(
A shame, this season looks to be a lot of fun.
-
Just a reminder that the second race of the season starts at 15:00 eve time today (12th).
-
Actually I think all races are at 14:00 this season.
-
All events are 15:00 now thanks to daylight savings time, but we recommend showing up an hour early to get to the start line on time.
-
Ah, proof that I have not been sleeping enough. I didn't even notice the time changed.
-
Had a feeling I wouldn't be able to make any for this season. Welp. Have yet another thing that I do in the mornings, now an hour earlier than my usual Saturday morning activities (so exactly at 15:00 :ugh:).
