Title: Avatars, sigs and you.
Post by: BloodBird on 24 Feb 2011, 10:53
So it is that I've always, since I first started viewing forums and boards on the world wide sticky place, had a fondness for the avatar and signature options available. A bit of an excuse to show-off or be flashy or simply use one you like, for whatever reason you like it. It alternatively, not use any avatar/sig at all if that's your thing. “The board is there to chat on I can't be bothered with my avatar so long as my name's there, and such.

So, if you use avatar(s) and/or signatures, where are they from and why did you use this one and/or the previous one(s)? Did you pick it for any special reason other than “it's cute/it was a ransom thing”?

Share the fun. I'd love to see if this topic get's any serious response. I'll belay any info on my own to see if any interest arise for this topic, first.

My avatar's just my in-game me, so tada! My favorite EVE-related avatar is Tercius's on the EM forums. The photoshopped yellow pimp hat with zebra-striped headband on his old Sebbie avatar makes me lulz every time.

Duckling is one of my corp titles and callsign. Ko earned that from Eva for a virtual simulation of a pond; she drags people there to get them to relax and feed the ducks. She'll randomly, "Peep," out of the blue when things are tense to remind everyone to relax - a fun codeword sound thing that's so out-of-place that even someone who doesn't understand has to pause for a moment. And, then there's the, "BATTLEPEEP!", when it's time to pew pew.

The quote is something I'll change at random. Right now, it was something Ko said to Gottii months ago when they had one of their many talks about spiritual matters.

I still love my siggy weeks after getting it, and I don't think I'll stop for a long time. I even use it on other, not-EVE forums. I was tempted for a looooong time to apply to PRETA, and I'll admit the sigs I saw all of them using was part of the temptation. There's just something about the close-up of the eyes that intrigues me. About a month ago Marcus gave me this one after Myrh made it for me. I've been giddy and proud of it ever since.

I actually have avatars and sigs turned off for security reasons, so the only time I see them is if I go look at somebody's profile directly.

If I had a setting to see only those images uploaded here directly, then I'd go that route.

Turned off for security reasons? Would you mind elaborating? I'm curious.

My avatar is one of my favorite modules, who doesn't love a point? Except when it's pointing at you.

I open up photoshoop once every week or so and crank out a new signature for some place I go postin', like I did here this morning. They usually don't have any real meaning other than to be a nice aesthetic touch to my generally crude posts, occasionally it will follow a theme, but they will most often be inspired by whatever music I have playing on my turntable or mp3 player at the time. They're always unique to the board I post at too, you won't see me use this signature anywhere else, or ever again once I change it. I also tend not to use text in my own signatures and keep it purely art mishmash.

I'll also often do signatures/avatars/banners for corp/alliance members and their killboards/websites, and maybe even you if you ask nicely! ;)

Essentially, any user can insert nearly any code they want into your web page. This actually bit me before on another SMF forum I administered (oddly enough for a MMO RP community), where the "avatar" for one of the users actually was a JavaScript file containing exploit code.

Some of this is due to browsers trying to interpret faulty XHTML code, which most apps produce. So a browser will try to figure out what it 'should' do, and that can lead to problems.

I haven't seen those sorts of attacks crop up on Backstage, thankfully.

Never thought of that, but that must be extremely rare.

The fact that I manage incident response and investigations for a financial services firm might affect my paranoia.

ANYWAY, sorry for the off-topic. I do like sigs, and I really should get some new ones made soonish.

My avatar was made out of inspiration for my whole corp to have aviator pics and follow the meme that best describes our IC attitude.

As for the signature, the courage wolf pic was made in response to an inside joke of sorts. Been in a lot of RP communities, seen the same thing crop up more than once.

As for the two music links, I thought I'd express my view on how IC pirates are typically viewed. Among their own ranks, typically fun people and a lot of spirit for what they do, and a lot of play on the "money, clothes and women" motif. In the public sphere, it's practically campy that they're viewed as peg-legged scalliwags with eye patches and cutlasses.

The avatar I'm using a chibi I made when I first joined the forums. It kinda looks like Vince and has his zippolighter in it. So it serves it's purpose.

The signature I currently use is something a friend of mine put together for me. I like the intense blue eyes of a madman. Relating to a short story I wrote a while back. The pic used in it is a still of Kraven from Underworld. And like Kohi-Duck, something about the close up of eyes intrigues me.

The title "Magnificent Bastard" is the name of my blog and works well to describe Vince. The tagline "Trust me." is Vince's catchphrase of sorts, most who've interacted with him have heard it in one context or another.

My current avatar is supposed to be an IC surveillance image representing one of the few camera shots that have captured GoGo during her 3 year absence from public scrutiny. Basically, one day I was wondering what the hell was my character up to since I hadn't played the game for a long time. The avatar is the result of that.. and a low grade mystery to crack for anyone who looks close enough. Just some idle fun with a character I wasn't playing at the time.

Wouldn't the image validation catch that? I mean the field for phpbb, and for this software also is set to accept only images.

My avatar and sig are rather obvious, so yeah :P

Where's it from originally though?

And mine's a doctored image of Brandon Lee, with tattoos and dogtag...pretty much what I would expect Seriphyn to look like IRL, considering Seri is Jin-Mei/Deteis, and Brandon himself is Chinese/European.

Dunno about phpBB, but SMF definitely allowed a .js file in that field (this was about two years ago). And browsers usually have rendering modes where they'll allow non-standard things like parsing the Javascript included. This is why browsers have to have so many security updates, because input validation doesn't occur as often as it should.

It's pre-Zergification Kerrigan, from one of the SC2 trailers, iirc.

As for my avatar/sig... well, avatar's just a representation of Morwen via one of the staple tektek chibis. No sig at the moment because I haven't gotten around to making one yet. If/when I do, I'll post again. :P
(http://i883.photobucket.com/albums/ac34/Terenin_Amatiril/NxA%20Avatar%20Album/Senna-Cunningsmile.jpg)
My own (current) avatar is a cut from a fan-art piece, of a character from the first Bleach movie. I'm using it because;

A) I tried to get another avatar made from another fan-art piece, however it would not let me cut it down small enough without ruining the quality so I had to pick this one, and

B) I seriously like this one better due in part to the... knowing little smirk, on her face. Considering the personality of the character it was taken from, this one seems far darker - grim, seasoned, and with that hint of viciousness to her. This reflects well my main character in-game at this time, or how he will likely be when I'm done ruining his life.

*EDIT* 06/12/12: Added the old avatar I described in this post, for clarity.

Generally speaking, the only forums I'm really actively involved in are related to EVE, so the avatar and signature generally relate to the feeling of the character represented. Since Kal's a wicked little bitch I tend to find pictures that represent who she is, RL lookalikes, or the avatar taken from the game. I happen to think she's pretty enough as an avatar so I'll keep it for now. ^^

Generally in any related game I play for a long time and comitted to. I have had a related signature so it only felt natural to get one made. I paid mine to get made but had a direct say in how it was developed.

Basicily its supposed to be a Wyvern emerging from cyno field, think more dramatic then the ones you see in game. Its flanked by Mantis fighter bombers and the dragonflies to add more dynamic size.

The quote "Death smiles at us all, all you can do is smile back" I took it from probalily one of most favorite movies of all time. I let you guess at what movie it is.

What it represents more so the war-like nature of the Caldari. if you read the PF the Caldari don't have the same size of fleet of the Amarr or Federation but there equaly as troublesome.

The Avatar is a attempted more how would I envision my character in-game this was pre-incarna engine creation. I'm still not gonna switch to my in-game photo for a Avatar.

I'll try and find some old other game signatures I had made and post them here. Though many computer switches between my  houses over the years and cleaning out of photobucket I've lost alot of my stuff I used to work on.

my avatar's and sigs are ones I make for myself, generally to fit the theme of whatever forum I'm on, in this case I wanted something to advertise my art, and the hurricane is a very nice ship imo.

I make my own sigs/avs, as well, though I rather like the cutesy Tektek chibis, and use a somewhat edited one as a default for LiveJournal (shut up). The graphics I use usually represent who I am or who my character is. Sometimes I'll do my own artwork; more often I blend an existing image with my own work and a few effects. My last sig fit with a sort of standardised theme that I maintained for all other Hellcats forum sigs, using the most striking feature of the character, along with a ship of our choice (http://anjylle.cust.nearlyfreespeech.net/pages/portfolio/commissions/gaming-related-commissions.php). They were intended to be eye-catching and help people quickly identify Hellcats members on the Eve-O and corporate forums.

My avatar on the Veto forums (http://anjylle.cust.nearlyfreespeech.net/media/EveOnline/Shae_Vetoav_01.jpg) I made at the same time as my current forum sig, using a different image of the same Madureira character (Red Monika from Battle Chasers; I'm such a comic books geek), edited slightly to blend with Shae's Gallente background.

Avatar: Modified Ushra'Khan logo. Stolen shamelessly from U'K internal forums.
Sig: Shae Tiann's marvelous hand-drawn artwork, every single piece but the font is hand/custom made by Shae Tiann. I definitely recommend her as an Avatar/Sig artist. Still waiting for the avatar she was supposed to cook up for me, though.

The sig is self-explainable for the most part. Ushra'Khan bloody fist of Matar, except it's hand-drawn and new. The eyes are Mizhara's own blind eyes, there's space and there's Mizhara's oft-asked question to her Amarrian victims... "Where is your God now?" as they die or just finished dying.

Edit: Strange... the sig is gone. Let me find it again and figure out where it went, then put it back in.
Edit2: Fixed. Wonder why it was gone?

My current avatar is working on the principal of how I felt at the moment I started using it: people are st00pid.
I may change it again, depends on my whim...

Sig has a do while loop because I'm a nerd, the quote is from another forum - Linux related, and the image is something I cooked up myself. I'll leave the translation of the Chinese because I'm awesome liek that.

Other forums, I use different avatars & sigs. It's boring to use the same thing over & over, and they're not all EVE-related.
Signature choice is usually based on my current mood, and what the forum is about.

Necroing - what happens when you find many old treads in the ongoing quest to find all game-related treads on 21 pages worth of posting-history. I am not apologizing.

The current avatar as of 06/12/12. Based on a bigger picture made by the character's creator, obviously. Like so many of my previous avatars this one depicts my favorite fictional person. This one might be among the newest and best versions I've seen, I love the details and the expression, even if some of it is lost when the Avatar is compressed to fit the forum.

My sig, which I am still giddily pleased with was put together by a lovely fellow in RvB, who does free ones for all members of Red or Blue. I was technically an ex-member at the time, but as a long term participant in the RvB Gank nights, he let it slide :p Ponies and Hurricanes! \o/

Oh why not.

Avatar is the old mugshot from before walking in quarters, because I miss my hair thingys and want them back.

Signature is from when I first joined Rho Dynamics, I honestly forgot who made it, I just remember that everyone got one at the time, and they all looked fantastic, and since it still fits, I kept it.  Maybe Gyra made it?
