Petty Holders
« on: 07 Dec 2014, 09:09 »

I was thinking about petty Holders in the Amarr Empire, and wondered what these Holdings might actually consist of.

We know, from the Evelopedia, that there is a hierarchy of Holders in the Empire, and that the smallest Holdings might consist of simply a parcel of space. Generally, anyone that owns land on a planet outranks people who don't own land, with the older planets having the most prestige. E.g. someone that owns a small island on Amarr Prime might outrank someone that owns several entire star systems in say Aridia.

So, I was looking at the structures that can be found in space, and how they'd be used on these Holdings.

The smallest Holding, one containing no asteroids or ice asteroids, would consist of the Holder's residence, and not much else.

The residence might be a Habitation Module, or something more prestigious, up to a small station.

There'd be a few other structures, maybe a Solar Harvester, and an Astrofarm or two, both to supply the residence, and to provide some meagre income. There might even be some small manufacturing industry. And to support this, there'd be docking platforms, cargo handling rigs and warehouses. As well as additional Habitation modules for the population needed to work there.

The Holder might not own any ships, or if they do, they might only own a Shuttle or Impairor. Larger ships like a Bestower or Sigil may visit the Holding regularly, or as needed, but aren't stationed there permanently.

A step up from those Holdings, would be those that have asteroids in them. Here, in addition to the structures previously mentioned, there'd be Asteroid mining facilities, and likely more industry. The Holder is more likely to own ships, and may even own a Sigil or Bestower, to support the mining.

There would also be local market towns, where the Holder has several cargo handling facilities, and the settlement functions as a trading post. There'd be ship maintenance and repair facilities, and this marketplace would be where ships would operate from, serving the smaller Holdings.

Up from the local market towns, would be full size stations, such as the ones that capsuleers can dock at. These would have all sorts of local services within them.

Here's some examples of the structures I mean:

How this would be relevant to player-characters, is that a space Holding is a lot more easily incorporated into the game world, than a planetary Holding.

Not everyone can have a vineyard on Amarr Prime, for example. Anyone that does, is very distinctly in the top 0.001% of the nobility.

In contrast, anyone could potentially have space-vineyards on their space Holding. and be in the lowest 1% of the nobility.

I really thought this thread was going to be about Holders having petty arguments.

lol.

those petty arguments do happen though :)

the Amarr Cosmos missions are about one such disagreement, between two space lords, plotting over control of some more small bits of space in one star system.

Confirmed.  Came for the politicking and petty jealousies and plotz.

Is being a Holder explicitly tied to having an actual bit of land/space and, if so, is that sometimes just a symbolic thing (so they can have the title, and the rights and privileges that go with it) for someone who is more powerful than their holding would suggest.

For example, your tiny cube of space or patch of a frozen moon in a backwater system would generally make you a low ranking holder. However, you vast trading concern makes you wealthier than many who have their patch of land on Amarr Prime.

Could also see the use of marriages etc in the classic aristocrat model. You family is poor but is the holder of a square mile of Amarr Prime? (Obviousloy you can't sell it, and for whatever reason there isn't a useful way to generate significant revenue from it). Well, perhaps an ambitious and wealthy holder who is unlucky enough to be stuck with a couple of planets in Aridia might come calling.
