...What. What did they do?

Goblins jumping out at random? Bilbo visible in Smaug's cave? The dwarves being chased by elves when they escape via barrels? I really do not mind the extra storylines, or even sticking Legolas in + what I can only guess is a romantic interest, but with all of that extra stuff, why must they make all the original events so damn melodramatic?
