There is plenty of similar work done with the soldiers that have been wounded in the Iraq war.

Why fiddle with an expensive mechanical hand when you can simply get the hand of a dead guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgaMZT1Z2dw&feature=player_embedded)?

Being a biomedical engineer myself and knowing the world of mechanical prosthetics, I chuckled a bit when he mentioned that the hand had three degrees of freedom.
